Ethereum gets Bellatrix upgrade today

The upgrade to Ethereum 2.0 is about to begin on the Ethereum blockchain. The hard fork (a separation process) that converts Ethereum from a proof-of-work (PoW) base to a proof-of-stake (PoS) basis is known as Ethereum 2.0. One of the steps in the update procedure, called “The merge,” is scheduled between September 10 and 20.

Before the final merge, the Bellatrix update for ETH is scheduled today, when the Ethereum Epoch value is anticipated to rise to 144,896 on the proof-of-stake chain.

[In proof-of-work, crypto transactions are verified through mining. Meanwhile, in proof of stake, a network participant gets selected to add the latest batch of transactions to the blockchain and earn some crypto in exchange.]

Crypto prices today: Bitcoin up 0.6%, ETH rises 6.4%

Bitcoin is currently trading at $19,886.48, an increase of 0.59% over the previous day. Ethereum is up 6.4% over the last 24 hours to $1,666.43. Solana rose 4.14% to $33.1, while Cardano is trading higher by 2.9% at $0.506. Polkadot (DOT) rose 1.1% to $7.6. The global crypto market cap stands at $998.1 billion, a 2.2% increase over the previous day.

Ethereum domain names top NFTs as most traded asset on OpenSea

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) domains have taken the top spot as the number one collection on NFT marketplace OpenSea. Driven by a 170% jump in sales over the past 24 hours, ENS surpassed the Bored Ape Yacht Club in seven-day volume. Over the past week, ENS trading volume surpassed 2,305 ETH or $3.76 million, registering a 43% week-over-week increase.

Trezor partners with Wasabi to make Bitcoin more private

Trezor has partnered with privacy project Wasabi to bring CoinJoin mixing to Bitcoin transactions on its hardware wallets. Users will be able to use CoinJoinon their Trezor devices for greater transaction privacy beginning next year. CoinJoin is a coin mixer that groups Bitcoin transactions together to obscure their origins.

Australia establishes federal crypto police unit

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) have set up a crypto crime unit that will trace and seize illicit crypto linked to money laundering and other criminal activity. The unit will help combat crypto criminals by targeting their assets and providing investigative tracing capability. Over the past year, cybercriminals have increasingly used crypto to commit a range of serious crimes in Australia.

Crypto for Ukraine provides a flow of war-related assistance

People around the world have donated millions of dollars directly to Ukraine’s war effort via cryptos such as Bitcoin. The Ukrainian government says it has taken in almost $67 million of its $200 million target as of Saturday (March 26). The country has spent ~$34 million of the funds received as of last week. It has converted about 80% to traditional currencies and used the remainder with merchants that already accept crypto.

Govt recovered Rs 95.86 crore from 11 crypto exchanges for GST evasion

The Centre has recovered a total of Rs 95.86 crore, including interest and penalty, from 11 crypto exchanges for evading Goods and Services Tax (GST). The biggest evasion was detected at Zanmai Labs Pvt. Ltd, which operates under the brand WazirX. The quantum of evasion was Rs 40.51 crore. Coin DCX came second on the list with evasion of Rs 15.70 crore.

It will also mark a shift away from the energy-intensive mining process followed currently.

Solana fell 1.2% to $86.26, while Cardano is trading lower by 1.6% at $0.829. Avalanche (AVAX) rose 3.62% to $79.41. The global crypto market cap stands at $1.82 trillion, a 0.21% increase over the previous day.

Coinbase hit with $5M lawsuit over ‘unlicensed’ sale of Dogecoin, 78 other crypto assets

Three users have accused Coinbase of selling unlicensed securities. They are seeking at least $5 million on behalf of themselves and everyone else who purchased Dogecoin, Solana, Cardano, and 70 other tokens on the platform. The users claim that since Coinbase is allegedly selling securities, it should have registered with the SEC as a national securities exchange. Such a designation is typically reserved for stock exchanges. It would subject Coinbase to a lot of regulatory and reporting obligations. 

US Crypto Sanctions Bill aims to crack down on Russia, track wallets with foreign ties

US Senator Elizabeth Warren has proposed a new bill that enhances the US government’s ability to crack down on Russian crypto use. The bill also has a provision that requires US taxpayers to report certain types of crypto transactions. It would give US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen “clear authority” to block US-based crypto exchanges from facilitating transactions with wallets based out of Russia.

GameStop to launch NFT marketplace by end of July

GameStop (GME) intends to launch a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace by the end of July. It will partner with layer 2 system Immutable X for the launch of its NFT plans. The game retailer had hired dozens of people in Q4 with experience in areas such as blockchain gaming, e-commerce, and technology.
