IOCL Reports a Net Profit of Rs 13,750Cr in Q1- Top Indian Market Updates

IOCL Q1 Results: Net profit at ₹13,750 crore

Indian Oil Corp Ltd (IOCL) reported a standalone net profit of ₹13,750 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY24. The company posted a net loss of ₹1,992 crore in the same quarter last year. However, IOCL’s operating revenue fell 12% YoY to ₹2.21 lakh crore in Q1 FY24. EBITDA stood at ₹22,163 crore for the June quarter, up 44.5% sequentially.

Adani Transmission is now Adani Energy Solutions

Adani Group’s power transmission and distribution arm, Adani Transmission Ltd, has undergone a name change. Adani Transmission Ltd will now be known as Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. The name change is with effect from Thursday. The renaming was warranted by the company’s entry into the power distribution space following the acquisition of the power distribution business of Reliance Infrastructure.

Piramal Enterprises to buy back shares worth Rs 1,750 crore at Rs 1,250 apiece after 12 years

Piramal Enterprises Ltd (PEL) has announced a share buyback scheme worth ₹1,750 crore at ₹1,250 apiece via tender route. The offer represents a premium of 16.5% to the July 28 (Friday) closing price of ₹1,072.80. The company plans to buy back 5.87% of the total shares. The company’s promoter group will not participate in the buyback. The record date for the buyback will be on August 25, 2023.

Vedanta in talks with ‘world class’ tech partner for semiconductor

Vedanta is in talks with a “world-class” technology partner for its semiconductor business. The firm has signed hundreds of memorandum of understanding (MoUs) across the world to build an ecosystem for semiconductor manufacturing. The development comes weeks after Foxconn announced its decision to withdraw from the $19.5 billion joint venture (JV) with Vedanta for semiconductor production in India.

Marico Q1 Results: Net profit rises 47% to ₹112 crore

Marico reported a 15% YoY increase in consolidated net profit to ₹427 crores for the June quarter (Q1 FY24). However, its revenue from operations fell 3% YoY to ₹2,477 crore during the same period. Additionally, EBITDA rose 9% YoY to ₹574 crore in the June quarter. Domestic revenues came in at Rs 1,827 crore, down 5% YoY.

DGCA slaps ₹30 lakh fine on IndiGo

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) imposed a penalty of ₹30 lakh on IndiGo for four tail strike incidents in six months of 2023. Recently, DGCA had asked airlines to strictly follow rules as well as sensitise pilots and cabin crew to prevent incidents of unauthorised entry of people into the cockpit. The regulator had also warned that any non-compliance with the applicable regulation dealing with unauthorised cockpit entry shall be dealt with strictly and may also invite stringent enforcement action.

SBI Cards Q1 Results: Net profit falls 5% YoY to ₹593 crore

SBI Cards & Payment Services reported a 5% YoY fall in net profit to ₹593 crore for the June quarter (Q1 FY24). Its total income stood at ₹4,046 crore during the same period, up 24% YoY. Total income stood at ₹3,263 crore in Q1 FY23.  Its Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) rose to 2.41% of gross advances against 2.24% last year. Net Non-Performing Assets (NNPA) increased to 0.89% from 0.78% in Q1 FY23.

Rail Vikas Nigam bags Rs 1,088 crore Haryana Orbital Rail project

Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) has secured a four-year contract from Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (HRIDC). The new order is in connection with the development of the New Broad-Gauge Railway Line. The contract value of the project is ₹1,088 crore with an estimated time of completion being four years. The project pertains to RVNL carrying out multiple works for the double gauge Haryana Orbital Rail Corporation (HORC) project that will connect Palwal to Sonipat via Sohna, Manesar, and Kharkhouda.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) has secured a significant long-term contract from ONGC Petro Additions Ltd (OPaL) for the supply of Natural Gas. HPCL will supply 13.53 trillion Btu of natural gas to OPaL’s Mega Petrochemical Complex at Dahej from October 23 to May 26. OPaL, a joint venture of ONGC, GAIL, and GSPC, requires natural gas for its Captive Power Plant (CPP) to meet its power and steam requirements.

Ipca labs under pressure after USFDA closes inspection at Madhya Pradesh unit with 11 observations

Ipca Labs’ API manufacturing facility in Ratlam received 11 observations from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) during an inspection from June 5 to June 13. The facility has been under a USFDA import alert since 2015, which means its products do not meet US standards and are prohibited from being sold in the US. Additionally, two other plants in SEZ Indore and Silvassa, manufacturing formulations, have also been under import alert since 2015.

Laurus Labs Ltd has entered into a Memorandum of Association (MoA) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, to introduce innovative gene therapy assets in India and other markets. Grasim to begin construction of 1 lakh MT CPVC resin facility in Gujarat by late-2023

Grasim Industries has announced that the construction of a 1 lakh metric tonne Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) resin facility in Vilayat, Gujarat, will begin in late 2023. The company had previously agreed with Lubrizol Manufacturing India Pvt Ltd. to establish the plant, with the first phase scheduled for production in 2022. However, the project was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent supply chain disruptions.

Reliance Industries resumes vessel operations at Sikka port

Reliance Industries has resumed vessel operations at the port of Sikka in Jamnagar, Gujarat, following the impact of cyclone Biparjoy. According to industry sources, any vessel can now enter the Gulf of Kutch and call the Sikka Ports & Terminals Ltd (STPL). Last week, the company restricted vessel entry at the port due to a lack of anchorage positions. Ship-tracking data showed that around 13-21 tankers were waiting to discharge crude oil at the port.

Tata Power has announced plans to invest ₹12,000 crore in capital expenditure for the current financial year (FY23). This investment is double the amount spent in the previous year and will support the company’s growth targets. Zydus Lifesciences has received final approval from the USFDA for its generic antibiotic Minocycline Hydrochloride extended-release tablets. These tablets help treat moderate to severe acne in individuals aged 12 years and above. Zydus Lifesciences will manufacture the product at its formulation manufacturing facility in Moraiya, Ahmedabad. This approval allows the company to bring an affordable generic version of the medication to the market.

The Government of India has announced its plan to sell a 0.15% stake (~92.44 lakh shares) in Coal India to eligible employees via Offer For Sale (OFS). The offer will be made at a price of ₹226.10 per share and will be open for subscription from June 21 to June 23, 2023. The government currently holds a 66.13% stake in Coal India, while the remaining shares are held publicly.

IndiGo places order for 500 Airbus aircraft

IndiGo has received board approval to order 500 Airbus A320 Neo family aircraft. This makes it the single largest purchase agreement in commercial aviation history. With this order, IndiGo now has a total of 1,330 Airbus aircraft on order, solidifying its position as the world’s largest customer for the A320 Family. The deal is estimated to be valued at approximately $50 billion based on the most recent Airbus list prices.

SEBI bans IIFL Securities from taking new clients for 2 years

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has imposed a two-year ban on IIFL Securities Ltd from taking new clients as a stockbroker. The action was taken after a thematic inspection revealed that IIFL did not comply with the code of conduct for stockbrokers and violated regulations. SEBI found that IIFL failed to separate its funds from clients’ funds, misused credit balances, and wrongly designated client bank accounts.

PV Wholesales Rise 13.54% in May – Top Indian Market Updates

Passenger vehicle wholesales rise 13.54% in May at 3.3 lakh units

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), wholesale domestic passenger vehicle (PV) sales in May increased by 13.54% YoY to 3,34,247 units, compared to 2,94,392 units in May FY22. Domestic two-wheeler sales rose 17.42% YoY to 14,71,550 units in May FY23. Overall, total vehicle dispatches across categories in May were recorded at 18,08,686 units, up from 15,32,861 units in May 2022.

MRF hits Rs 1 lakh per share

Tyre major MRF Ltd. saw its share price climb above the ₹1 lakh mark in intraday trading on the BSE and NSE today, making it the first Indian stock to trade above the six-figure mark. On the NSE, MRF touched an intraday peak of ₹1,00,439.95. As of Tuesday, the market capitalisation of MRF stood at ₹42,390 crore.

Adani Group’s wind power project in Sri Lanka to be ready by Dec 2024

Adani Group is set to complete its renewable energy project in Sri Lanka, generating 500 MW in the north and eastern regions by December 2024. According to IQVIA MAT data 2023, Varenicline tablets had annual sales of $501 million in the US.

HFCL Ltd has secured a new order worth Rs 80.92 crore from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The order is for the implementation of a fibre optics transmission system in three priority corridors of Phase IV of the Delhi metro rail project. The contract includes the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the system. The project timeline is 156 weeks from the date of notice to proceed (NTP).

Aircraft lessor Aircastle has escalated its legal battle against SpiceJet by filing a new plea on June 13. The plea accuses SpiceJet of unpaid dues and seeks insolvency proceedings. India’s retail inflation eases to a 2-year low of 4.25% in May

According to the Ministry of Statistics, India’s retail inflation has eased to a two-year low of 4.25% in May 2023, compared to 4.7% in April. Retail inflation is measured by Consumer Price Index (CPI). The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) also eased to 2.91% in May from 3.84 % in April. Rural inflation stood at 4.17%, while urban inflation stood at 4.27 %.

India’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) increased by 4.2% in April, up from 1.1% in March 2023 and down from 6.7% in April 2022. The manufacturing sector’s output grew by 4.9% in April 2023 compared to 5.6% a year ago. Power generation declined by 1.1% and mining output rose by 5.1% during the same period.

India’s domestic air passenger traffic up by 2.3% in May

According to ICRA, the domestic air passenger traffic was estimated at 131.8 lakh in May, about 2.3% higher than 128.9 lakhs in April 2023. Further, it witnessed a 15% YoY growth of about 15%, compared to May 2022. Domestic passenger traffic in May 2023 was higher by about 8% compared to the pre-Covid levels (that is, May 2019). The airlines’ capacity deployment in May 2023 was higher by 1.4%  than that of May 2022, reaching the pre-Covid levels (May 2019).

According to a CNBC-TV18 report, the family of IndiGo’s co-founder Rakesh Gangwal is likely to sell a 5-8% stake in the Indian airline’s parent InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, which is worth up to ₹7,500 crore. Rakesh Gangwal and his wife, Shobha Gangwal, hold 13.23% and 2.99%, respectively, in InterGlobe as of March 31, 2023.  Their Chinkerpoo Family Trust holds a 13.5% stake in the airline.

SBI to raise Rs 50,000 crore via debt instruments in FY24

State Bank of India’s (SBI) board said it plans to raise up to Rs 50,000 crore this financial year (FY24) by issuing debt instruments. The instruments could be long-term bonds, Basel-III compliant additional tier-1 bonds, or Basel-III compliant tier-2 bonds. The move is part of the bank’s plans to meet the overall demand for credit. 

Demand for bank loans has consistently stayed in double digits despite a 250-basis points increase in interest rates since May 2022.

Allcargo Logistics has successfully acquired a 30% stake (~1.50 lakh shares) in Gati-Kintetsu Express (GKEPL) for Rs 406.71 crore. The company’s subsidiary (Gati) already held a 70% stake in GKEPL. With this acquisition, Allcargo and Gati now own 100% of GKEPL and assume complete control. The completion of this transaction aligns with the Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) signed between the parties in March 2023.

India’s forex reserves up $5.9 billion to $595.1 billion 

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that India’s foreign exchange reserves rose by $5.9 billion to reach $595.06 billion for the week ending June 2. This marked the largest increase in a month, breaking a two-week declining trend. India’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) decreased by $6 million to $18.186 billion, while the reserve position with the IMF grew by $10 million to $5.123 billion.

He added that the bank had also doubled market capitalisation in less than a year from Rs 13,000 crore to Rs 28,000 crore, thereby increasing the wealth of the shareholders. Vedanta announces 5th interim dividend of Rs 20.5 per share

Vedanta has declared a fifth interim dividend of Rs 20.50 per equity share for the current financial year 2022-23 (FY23). The dividend will amount to Rs 7,621 crore. The company has already set April 7 as the record date for the same. The record date determines the eligibility of shareholders for the said dividend payment. In FY23, Vedanta has already declared four equity dividends of Rs 12.50, Rs 17,50, Rs 19.50, and Rs 31.50, respectively.

PNB Housing Finance reported a 43% YoY increase in net profit to ₹269 crore for the quarter ended December (Q3 FY23). Its net interest income (NII) rose 67% YoY to ₹734 crore during the same period. The total loan book increased from Rs 57,845 crore in Q3 FY22 to ₹58,034 crore in Q3 FY23. The gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio improved from 6.06% in Q3 FY22 to ₹4.87% in Q3 FY23.

BPCL to set up 1 GW renewable energy plant in Rajasthan

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) will set up 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy capacity in Rajasthan. Domestic air passenger traffic grows 15% in December: ICRA

According to rating agency ICRA, India’s domestic air passenger traffic registered a 15% year-on-year (YoY) growth to around 129 lakh in December 2022. However, it remained 1% lower than the pre-pandemic level of December 2019. The domestic aviation industry operated at an estimated passenger load factor of around 91% in December 2022, compared to 80%in December 2021 and about 88% in Dec 2019.

IDBI Bank Ltd. has informed the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) of its intention to file objections against the merger of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. On Wed, ZEEL disclosed that an application has been filed by IDBI Bank in the insolvency court claiming to be one of the creditors of the company. Tata Motors has launched the new Tigor EV with an extended range of 315km. Available in four variants, the new Tigor EV price starts at ₹12.49 lakh and goes up to ₹13.75 lakh (ex-showroom). The electric passenger vehicle portfolio of the auto major currently includes the Nexon EV, Tigor EV, and Tiago EV. Tata Motors plans to offer 10 electric models in its portfolio by 2026.

Bajaj Healthcare begins trial run for new opium processing line

Bajaj Healthcare Ltd (BHL) has started the trial run of a new production line for processing opium at Savli in Vadodara district, Gujarat. The new production line will produce Alkaloids and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) used in a wide range of pharma applications. BHL was the first private entity to be awarded tenders for the highly regulated opiate processing business by the Central government.

Zydus Lifesciences gets USFDA approval for ulcer treatment drug

Zydus Lifesciences Ltd. has received final approval from the USFDA to market famotidine injection. The drug is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines. It also prevents intestinal ulcers from coming back after they have healed. According to IQVIA data, Famotidine injection had annual sales of $1.9 million for the 12 months ended Sept 2022.

Oil prices fall more than $2 on Russian oil price cap talks

Oil prices fell by more than $2 a barrel on Wednesday as the Group of Seven (G7) nations looked at a price cap on Russian oil above where the crude grade is currently trading. Brent crude futures fell $2.71 (or 3.07%) to $85.65 a barrel. As per reports, G7 nations are looking at a price cap on Russian seaborne oil in the range of $65-70/billion barrels of oil (bbl).
