Larsen & Toubro Ltd has emerged as the lowest bidder for an order from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for electro-mechanical works of the Nuclear Island in the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana. The contract is worth up to ₹2500 crore. L&T’s scope of the order will include engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of nuclear equipment, valves, plant water package, and piping for all core nuclear systems.

Tata Power to develop 10,000 MW clean energy capacity in Rajasthan in next five years

Tata Power plans to develop around 10,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity in the next five years in Rajasthan. It will develop up to 8,000 MW of utility-scale projects, 1,000 MW of solar rooftop projects, and 1,50,000 solar pumps in the state. Its expansion projects will generate employment for more than 6,000-8,000 people in Rajasthan.

Ajmera Realty & Infra’s sales rises 82% to ₹166 crore in Q2

Ajmera Realty & Infra India Ltd recorded an 82% YoY increase in sales to ₹166 crore for the quarter ended September (Q2 FY23). The developer sold a total of nearly 80,000 square feet of carpet area in Q2. The quarterly performance has helped the company record a 181% YoY growth in sales to ₹566 crore during the first half of FY 2022-23.

Central govt, LIC to divest over 60% stake in IDBI Bank

The Central government and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) said they will divest a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank. Expressions of Interest (EoIs) from likely bidders will be invited on October 7, said the Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM). In May 2021, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had given in-principle approval for strategic disinvestment and transfer of management control in IDBI Bank.

Hero MotoCorp launches its first electric scooter: Vida V1

Hero MotoCorp Ltd launched its first electric scooter Vida V1 in two variants priced at ₹1.45 lakh and ₹1.59 lakh (ex-showroom). The Vida V1 Plus and Pro will offer top speeds of 80 km/hr and a range of 143 km and 165 km, respectively. The scooter has a removable battery and also comes with a portable charger. The company is setting up a network of fast-charging facilities to top up charge at 1.2 km/minute.

Equitas SFB gross advances up 20% to ₹22,802 crore in Q2

Equitas Small Finance Bank (SFB) Ltd’s gross advances grew by 20% YoY to ₹22,802 crore during the quarter ended September (Q2 FY23). The bank’s disbursements were up by 22% YoY to ₹3,845 crore. Total deposits rose by 20% YoY to ₹21,726 crore during the same period. Retail term deposits were at ₹7,665 crore in Q2, up by 13% YoY.

Vedanta Ltd has emerged as the highest bidder for two coal mines in Odisha on the second day of the commercial coal mines e-auction. The company won the bid for Ghogharpalli and its dip extension mines. Both coal mines are fully explored and have a peak rate capacity (PRC) of 20 million tonnes per annum. The government placed 10 coal mines on sale on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tata Power Solar Systems Ltd (TPSSL) will set up a 100 megawatts (MW) ground-mounted solar project for SJVN Ltd in Gujarat for ₹612 crore. The project will get commissioned within 11 months. With this order win, TPSSL’s total portfolio will touch 9.9 gigawatt-peak (GWp). The company’s total order book currently stands at ₹15,520 crore.

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank to focus on phygital platform, network expansion: CEO

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB) will focus on strengthening its exposure in the phygital platform and expand its branch network during the current financial year (FY23), said MD & CEO S Krishnan. Retail, agriculture, and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) segments would be the bank’s focus areas, as this vertical comprises 88% of its exposure.

Reliance Jio adds 29.4 lakh subscribers in July; Vi loses 15.4 lakh users

Reliance Jio added 29.4 lakh mobile subscribers in July 2022, taking its total subscription base to 41.59 crore. Bharti Airtel added 5.1 lakh subscribers, and its total user base stood at 36.34 crore. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea (Vi) lost 15.4 lakh mobile customers in July, and its user base fell to 25.5 crore. Jio and Airtel further widened their market shares to 36.23% and 31.66%, respectively. Vi’s share narrowed to 22.22% in July.

L&T Construction secures significant orders

Larsen & Toubro Ltd’s (L&T) construction arm has secured a significant order (in the range of ₹1,000-2,500 crore). The Water & Effluent Treatment business has received an order from the Government of Odisha to execute a pressurized underground pipeline irrigation network system for the Lower Suktel Irrigation project. The project aims to provide water to irrigate 27,000 hectares of Culturable Command Area (CCA) in the Balangir district, Odisha.

BPCL divestment not on the table as of now: Oil Minister

The divestment of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) is not on the table as of now, said Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri. In August, the Centre told Parliament that it will decide on re-initiating the process of BPCL strategic sale based on a review of the situation in due course.

In May 2022, the govt. formally withdrew its offer to sell its entire 52.98% stake in BPCL. A majority of bidders had expressed their inability to participate in the current privatisation process due to prevailing conditions in the global energy market.

UPL acquires 26% stake in Clean Max Kratos

UPL Ltd has acquired a 26% stake in renewable energy firm Clean Max Kratos Pvt Ltd. Clean Max was incorporated on July 28 with paid-up capital of ₹1 lakh. The company will develop and maintain a hybrid 28.05 MW solar and 33 MW wind power project. This project will enable UPL to increase its renewable energy usage to 30% of its total global power consumption (from the current level of 8%).

WPI inflation eases to 12.41% in August

India’s wholesale inflation eased to 12.41% in August 2022, compared to 13.93% in July. The Wholesale Price Inflation (WPI) continues to remain in double digits for the 17th consecutive month (since April 2021). The food articles segment witnessed a spike of 12.37% in August, compared to 10.77% in July. The fuel & power segment eased to 33.67% last month from 43.75% in July.

Tata Power to develop 4 MWp solar project at Pune plant

Tata Power has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Tata Motors to establish a 4 megawatt-peak (MWp) on-site solar project at the automaker’s Pune plant. The installation is expected to generate 5.8 million units of electricity, potentially mitigating over 10 lakh tonnes of carbon emission. 

In other news, Tata Power Solar Systems has secured an order worth ₹596 crore from NHDC to set up a 123 MWp floating solar project in Madhya Pradesh.

Bharti Airtel has partnered with IBM to deploy the telco’s edge computing platform ahead of its 5G network rollout in key cities. Dare Ventures, the venture capital arm of Coromandel International Ltd, has invested an undisclosed amount in Chennai-based drone startup Dhaksha Unmanned Systems Pvt. Ltd. The startup plans to use the funding for talent acquisition, research & development, and increase production. It has the capacity to manufacture 250-300 drones a month and aims to scale up to 1,000 a month within a year.

CCI dismisses CUTS plea against PVR-INOX merger

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has dismissed a plea filed by Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS) challenging the PVR-INOX merger. A complaint was filed by CUTS stating that the proposed deal will have anti-competitive effects on the industry. They also demanded a detailed probe into the proposal. The CCI said the apprehension of the likelihood of the anti-competitive practices cannot be subjected to inquiry.

KPI Green Energy Ltd has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) to supply a total of 15.88 MW of wind-solar hybrid power from its projects to six companies. The company will supply power from the upcoming wind-solar hybrid power project (comprising 16.10 MW wind capacity and 10 MW solar capacity) at Bhungar site in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat. The project was established under the Gujarat Hybrid Power Policy of 2018.

HFCL has received advance purchase orders aggregating to ₹447.81 crore from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. The order from BSNL includes the supply, installation, and commissioning of a Control User Plane Separation Broadband Network Gateway (CUPS BNG). Meanwhile, the order from RailTel comprises the supply, installation, and commissioning of an IP-based Video Surveillance System (VSS) at 180 railway stations.

A consortium led by Adani Group has requested and received an extension from the Israeli Government to complete its purchase of Haifa Port. The extension of a month and a half comes at the consortium’s request and takes into account Jewish holidays, said Israel’s Finance Ministry. It set a new final date of Nov. 27.

In July 2022, Israel announced it would sell Haifa Port (a major trade hub on its Mediterranean coast) to winning bidders Adani Ports and local chemicals & logistics group Gadot for $1.2 billion.

Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd, a subsidiary of Tata Power, will set up a 100 MW solar power plant for Viraj Profile Pvt. Ltd (VPPL) in Maharashtra. Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd has announced the launch of Lenalidomide Capsules in the US market. The drug is used to treat various types of cancers. USFDA asks Panacea Biotec to take corrective measures at Himachal unit

The US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) has asked Panacea Biotech Ltd for further corrective actions at the manufacturing unit of its wholly-owned arm at Baddi, Himachal Pradesh. Otherwise, the health regulator may withhold approval of any pending product applications from the facility. After inspection of the unit in May-June, USFDA issued Form 483 with eight observations related to improvements in existing procedures.

Govt to acquire stake in Vodafone Idea after shares stabilise at ₹10 or above

According to reports, the government will acquire a stake in debt-ridden Vodafone Idea (Vi) after its stock price stabilises at ₹10 or above. Vi’s board has offered a stake to the government at a par value of ₹10 per share. The Finance Ministry had cleared the proposal to acquire a stake in VIL in July.

The Ministry of Finance cleared a proposal to convert the accrued interest on dues related to deferred adjusted gross revenue (AGR) worth Rs 16,130 crore of Vi into equity, reported Economic Times today.

Debt-ridden Future Enterprises is facing a second insolvency plea filed by an operational creditor before National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The latest petition was filed by Retail Detailz India, claiming a default of ₹4.02 crore before the Mumbai bench of the NCLT. Last week, Foresight Innovations (another operational creditor) filed an application under Section 9 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) 2016 for an alleged default amount of ₹1.58 crore.

Adani Green’s 2,021% debt-equity ratio is second-worst in Asia: Bloomberg

Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has seen its debt-to-equity ratio surge to the second-highest in Asia. As per data compiled by Bloomberg, AGEL’s debt-to-equity ratio of 2,021% is only behind 2,452% of China’s Datang Huayin Electric Power Co. among 892 listed companies in Asia. AGEL is the most leveraged of the companies in the Adani Group by this metric as it takes on debt to fund a $70 billion pivot toward renewable energy.

Lupin Ltd has received approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for Rufinamide tablets. The drug is used to treat the symptoms of Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (seizures). They are available for oral administration as film-coated tablets. The product will be manufactured at Lupin’s facility in Goa. As per IQVIA MAT June 2022 data, Rufinamide tablets had estimated annual sales of $164 million (~Rs 1,306.4 crore) in the US.

India sees a 7.6% fall in domestic air passengers in July: DGCA

The latest data by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) showed a 7.6% decline in the total number of domestic air passengers in July 2022 to 97 lakh. Around 1.05 passengers travelled by air in June. The rainy season is usually a lean period for India’s aviation sector. IndiGo carried 57.11 lakh passengers in July, a 58.8% share of the domestic market. Meanwhile, SpiceJet carried 7.76 lakh passengers last month.

Tata Power Renewable Energy’s board has approved the allotment of 8.36 crore equity shares on a preferential basis aggregating ~Rs 2,000 crore to GreenForest New Energies Bidco (GNEB). GNEB is a consortium led by BlackRock Real Assets and Mubadala Investment Company. This transaction is part of an investment deal worth Rs 4,000 crore, which BlackRock and Mubadala will infuse into Tata Power Renewable Energy.

JSW Neo Energy (a wholly-owned subsidiary of JSW Energy) will acquire a portfolio of 1,753 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy generation capacity from Mytrah Energy (India) Pvt. L&T Construction to build cooling towers for Rawatbhata Atomic Power Project

Larsen & Toubro’s construction arm has secured an order (in the range of Rs 1,000-2,500 crore) from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) to build natural draught cooling towers and a cooling water pump house for the Rawatbhata Atomic Power Project. The scope of work also includes the construction of a cement mortar-lined and coated steel pipe, the main medium to transport hot water from the turbine to the cooling towers. The project is scheduled to be completed in 36 months.

Civil Aviation Ministry to remove fare caps imposed on airlines from August 31

The Ministry of Civil Aviation will remove fare caps for domestic airlines from August 31, 2022. The Central govt had regulated fares by imposing a minimum and maximum band based on the flight’s duration to prevent ticket prices from spiking due to pent-up demand arising from an easing of restrictions on air travel. The ministry will re-evaluate the fare cap for domestic airlines once there is a healthier environment in terms of jet fuel prices.

Inox Wind secures order for 200 MW wind power project from NTPC

Inox Wind has secured an order to establish a 200 MW wind power project from NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd. The project will be executed in Kutch District, Gujarat, and is scheduled to be commissioned by January 2024. As part of the order, Inox Wind will supply and install Wind Turbine Generators with 113 meters rotor diameter and 92 meters hub height. SpiceJet in talks with investors for stake sale: Report

As per a report from ET NOW, a Middle Eastern airline has expressed interest to pick up a 24% stake and a board seat in SpiceJet Ltd. Sources added that a big Indian business conglomerate has also approached promoter Ajay Singh to acquire a stake in the budget carrier. Ajay Singh holds around a 60% stake in SpiceJet. The cash-strapped airline urgently requires capital to keep flying.

InterGlobe Aviation Ltd (IndiGo) reported a net loss of Rs 1,064.3 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY23). Uber Technologies sold its entire 7.78% stake in Zomato Ltd in a bulk deal on the BSE today. The US-based company sold 61.22 crore shares of Zomato, which it had earned by selling Uber Eats in an all-stock deal in 2020, at Rs 50.44 per share. Meanwhile, Fidelity’s Emerging Market Fund bought 5.44 crore shares of Zomato in the bulk deal at an average price of Rs 50.26. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance bought 4.5 crore shares at Rs 50.25 per share.

Inox Leisure Ltd reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 57.09 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY23). India’s services PMI falls to 4-month low in July

India’s services sector lost momentum in July as demand was curtailed by competitive pressures, high inflation and unfavourable weather. The S&P Global India Services Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 55.5 in July, compared to 59.2 in June. Both output and sales increased at the weakest rates for four months.

[PMI is a month-on-month calculation, and a value above 50 represents an expansion when compared to the previous month.]

123 GW of solar capacity either commissioned or in pipeline: Govt

India has commissioned 57.71 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity, while another 48.71 GW has been in the pipeline since June-end. Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy Bhagwanth Khuba said a solar energy capacity of 123.11 GW has either been commissioned or is in the pipeline. The government aims to achieve 100 GW solar power capacity by December 2022. Meanwhile, renewable energy projects of 60.66 GW capacity are under various stages of implementation.

NTPC power generation rises 22% YoY in Q1 

NTPC Limited reported a 22% YoY growth in power generation at 104.4 billion units (BU) in the April-June quarter (Q1 FY22). The company posted a 29% YoY rise in power generation at 34.8 BU during June 2022, compared to 26.9 BU in June 2021. NTPC has also become India’s first energy company to declare its energy compact goals as part of the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy (HLDE).

RBI imposes Rs 1.05 crore penalty on Kotak Mahindra Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 1.05 crore on Kotak Mahindra Bank. The penalty can be attributed to non-compliance with the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, and directions on ‘Customer Protection– Limiting Liability of Customers in Unauthorised Electronic Banking Transactions’, and ‘Loans and Advances– Statutory and Other Restrictions’. 

In other news, RBI has imposed a penalty of Rs 1 crore on IndusInd Bank for non-compliant with certain Know Your Customer (KYC) norms.

Adani Enterprises declared lowest bidder in CIL import tender

Adani Enterprises Ltd has emerged as the lowest bidder in Coal India Ltd’s first coal import tender. The company quoted Rs 4,033 crore for the supply of 2.416 million tonnes (MT) of coal on a freight-on-road (FOR) basis. The imported coal will go to seven state-generating companies and 19 private power plants.

JSW Steel crude steel production rises 31% in May

JSW Steel Ltd’s crude steel production (standalone) increased by 31% year-on-year (YoY) to 17.89 lakh tonnes in May. The production of flat-rolled products also expanded by 29% YoY to 12.84 lakh tonnes. The company’s production of long items stood at 3.86 lakh tonnes, up 25% YoY. Currently, JSW Steel has an installed annual crude steel capacity of 18 million tonnes in India.

Jio-bp to power Zomato’s 100% electric vehicle fleet

Jio-bp has entered into an agreement with Zomato Ltd to support the food delivery company’s commitment toward a 100% electronic fleet by 2030. The joint venture between Reliance Industries and UK-based bp will provide electric vehicle mobility services to Zomato. It will also offer access to Jio-bp pulse branded battery swapping stations for last-mile delivery.

UPL’s arm acquires 100% stake in Kudos Chemie

UPL Speciality Chemicals Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of UPL Ltd, has acquired a 100% stake in Punjab-based Kudos Chemie Ltd. Kudos manufactures speciality chemicals used as ingredients in the beverages and pharmaceutical industries. It has a manufacturing facility near Chandigarh. UPL has paid Rs 40 crore as the total consideration for the acquisition.

SEBI issues demand notices to BSE, NSE in Karvy Stock Broking case

The Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has sent notices to stock exchanges BSE and NSE, asking them to pay over Rs 5 crore in a case related to Karvy Stock Broking Ltd (KSBL). It has warned of attachment of assets and bank accounts if they fail to make the payment within 15 days. In an order dated April 12, SEBI had imposed a penalty of Rs 3 crore on BSE and Rs 2 crore on NSE for failure on their part in detecting misuse of clients’ securities by KSBL.

Tata Power Solar commissions 66 MW project for Vibrant Energy

Tata Power Solar Systems Ltd (TPSSL) has commissioned a 66 megawatt (MW) EPC project for Vibrant Energy. The project is expected to generate up to 110,029 units of energy per year, resulting in a 9 lakh tonne reduction in carbon emissions. It covers 191 acres and includes 1,27,268 solar modules. TPSSL’s entire utility-scale solar project portfolio now stands at 9.7 gigawatt-peak (GWp).

India’s trade deficit at $24.29 billion in May

India’s trade deficit widened to $24.29 billion in May 2022, compared to $6.53 billion a year ago. Total imports rose 62.83% YoY to $63.22 billion, while imports rose 20.55% YoY to $38.94 billion. Petroleum and crude oil imports surged 102.72% to $19.2 billion in May. Imports of coal and coke increased from $2 billion in May 2021 to $5.5 billion in May 2022.

Cabinet approves 5G spectrum auction

The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to conduct a 5G spectrum auction. Spectrum will be assigned to successful bidders for providing 5G services to the public and enterprises. The government will auction a total of 72097.85 MHz spectrum with 20 years of validity by July end.
