India’s manufacturing PMI slips to 57.8 in June

India’s manufacturing PMI (Purchasing Manager’s Index) for June stood at 57.8, compared to 58.87 in May. The PMI of 57.8 is higher than 50 indicating an expansion in activities. Anything below 50 indicates contraction. India’s May manufacturing sector activity was at a 31-month high.

PMI is a month-on-month calculation, and a value above 50 represents an expansion compared to the previous month.

Adani Ports registers record cargo volume of over 100 MMT in June quarter

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has reported an 11.5% YoY increase in cargo volume handled at 101.4 million metric tonnes (MMT) in the quarter ending June 2023. This is the highest-ever quarterly cargo volume handled by the company. The company witnessed growth across most ports and all three broad cargo segments. The container segment grew 19% YoY, while liquids and gas and dry bulk segments grew 8% and 7% YoY respectively.

Edelweiss Financial Services to raise Rs 300 crore from NCDs 

Edelweiss Financial Services has announced the public issue of secured redeemable non-convertible debentures (NCDs). The NCDs have a face value of ₹1,000 each, amounting to ₹150 crores (base issue size). The issue also has the option to retain over-subscription up to ₹150 crores aggregating to ₹300 crores. Effective annual yield for NCDs ranges from 8.94% to 10.46%.

USFDA closes inspection at Zydus’ Ahmedabad unit with VAI recommendation

Zydus Lifesciences Ltd’s Ahmedabad unit received an ‘Establishment Inspection Report’ (EIR) from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA). The inspection has been closed with a ‘voluntary action indicated’ (VAI) recommendation in the EIR. A VAI is generally issued when a plant receives observations and responds to them, and the regulator believes the response by the company is satisfactory.

Kansai Nerolac sells Thane land parcel for Rs 671 crore to Hiranandani Group

Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd sold its land parcel in Thane to the Hiranandani Group. The sale was for a total consideration of ₹671 crore. The company entered into a deed of conveyance last Friday for the sale of a total area of 97,090 square metres together with the transfer of rights in land admeasuring 6,300 square metres.

SpiceJet repays Rs 100 crore to City Union Bank, releasing all securities pledged

SpiceJet completed the ₹100 crore settlement payment to City Union Bank a little over a decade after it took the loan. The airline said it paid the last Rs 25 crore tranche on June 30, 2023, thereby shutting the loan account opened in 2012. With this, all the securities of the airline that had been pledged with the bank now get released.

Lupin gets USFDA nod for cyanocobalamin nasal spray

Lupin Ltd has received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for cyanocobalamin nasal spray. The cyanocobalamin nasal spray is a generic equivalent of Nascobal nasal spray. According to IQVIA MAT, Cyanocobalamin nasal spray (RLD Nascobal) had estimated annual sales of $69 million in the US.

IIFL Finance raises $175 million from HSBC, Union Bank & Bank of Baroda

IIFL Finance raised $175 million through the external commercial borrowing (ECB) route in June 2023. The NBFC has raised $75 million from HSBC, $50 million from Union Bank (Sydney), and $50 million from Bank of Baroda. The company raised funds at SOFR (Secured Overnight Financing Rate) plus 200 basis points. With this, the company’s total borrowing since March 2023 aggregates to $275 million.

Zee and IndusInd Bank announce a settlement of all dues

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has closed the insolvency proceedings against Zeel after payment to creditors. NCLAT recorded that all payments were made to IndusInd Bank by June 30 as per the agreed-upon terms. As per IndusInd Bank’s plea, Zee paid nearly ₹84 crores in the case related to Siti Networks.

Bank of Maharashtra clocks 25% loan growth

Bank of Maharashtra has posted a credit growth of 24.93% at ₹1.75 lakh crore in the June quarter. The outstanding credit was ₹1.40 lakh crore at the end of June 30, 2022. The bank registered a 24.82% growth in the total business (total advances and total deposits) to ₹4.19 lakh crore at the end of June 2023 compared to ₹3.36 lakh crore in the June quarter of 2022.

Forex reserves fall $6.1 billion to $593.48 billion

According to the Reserve Bank India (RBI), India’s foreign exchange reserves fell  $6.052 billion to $593.477 billion as on May 19, 2023. Gold reserves fell by $1.227 billion to $45.127 billion while Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) fell by $137 million to $18.276 billion. The country’s total Foreign Currency Assets (FCA) also fell by $4.654 billion to $524.945 billion.

Reliance enters into partnership with General Mills for western snacks

Reliance Retail’s FMCG subsidiary Reliance Consumer Products Ltd (RCPL) has entered into a partnership with General Mills to enter the western snacks category. As part of the agreement, Reliance will introduce the global corn chips brand Alan’s Bugles in India, owned by General Mills. This move will position Reliance Consumer as a competitor to brands like Lays, Bingo, Balaji Wafers, and other players in the western snacks market.

Adani Green’s subsidiary Adani Wind Energy Kutchh Five Ltd has commissioned a 130 MW wind power plant at Kutchh in Gujarat. NCLAT sets aside NCLT order on Zee-Sony merger

In a relief to Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) set aside the National Company Law Tribuna (NCLT) order, which directed NSE and BSE to reconsider their approval for the ZEEL-Sony merger. A two-member NCLAT bench observed that the order passed by the Mumbai bench of NCLT was against the “principle of natural justice” as it did not grant any opportunity to ZEEL to respond over the issue of Shirpur Gold Refinery, an Essel Group firm.

RBI to transfer Rs 87,416 crore as dividend to Centre for FY23

The Reserve Bank of India’s board has approved the transfer of Rs 87,416 crore as surplus to the Central government. In FY22, the RBI transferred Rs 30,307 crore to the government. Dividends from public sector enterprises and other investments have been estimated at Rs 43,000 crore for FY24.

In other news, RBI said it will withdraw Rs 2,000 notes from circulation and people can exchange or deposit them in their bank accounts by September 30.

ZEEL begins talks with creditors for settlement of Sony merger

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (ZEEL) is in settlement talks with its creditors to pay off debts and complete its merger with the Sony Group. Creditors had been approaching the bankruptcy court seeking repayments, but ZEEL has already repaid one creditor, IndusInd Bank Ltd., and the lender will now withdraw its objections against the merger. The merger will create a $10 billion media company with the largest viewership and pricing power in India.

Fortis acquires Gurugram-based Medeor Hospital for Rs 225 crore

Fortis Healthcare will acquire Medeor Hospital in Manesar, Gurugram, from VPS Group for Rs 225 crore. The acquisition will be funded through a mix of debt and internal accruals and is expected to close by end of July 2023. The hospital has a potential bed capacity of 350 beds and can be operationalized in a phased manner within nine months. This will be Fortis’ largest acquisition following its controlling stake acquisition by Malaysia-based IHH Healthcare.

ICICI Securities Q4 Results: Net profit falls 23% to Rs 337 crore 

ICICI Securities reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 263 crore for Q4 2023, a 23% YoY decline. Revenue from operations also fell from Rs 892 crore in Q4 FY22 to Rs 885 crore in Q4 FY23.  However, income from interest for the quarter rose 35% YoY to Rs 287 crore. The brokerage income was Rs 310 crore. The company has recommended a final dividend of Rs 9.25 per equity share.

Tata Communications has reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 326 crore for the quarter ended March, down 11% YoY. State Bank of India’s (SBI) board has approved fundraising of up to $2 billion (~Rs 16,400 crore) for the financial year 2023-24. SBI plans to raise this amount through foreign currency bonds in single or multiple tranches. The bonds will be in the form of senior unsecured notes in US dollars or any other convertible currency and may be offered through a public offer and/or private placement. These perpetual bonds will have a call option after 10 years and every anniversary thereafter.

Reliance Capital resolution process completion deadline extended to July 16

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has extended the deadline for resolving Reliance Capital by three months to July 16, as lenders plan to hold a second round of auction on April 26 to maximize recovery from the sale of assets. Bidders including IndusInd International Holdings Ltd, Torrent Investment, and Oaktree have confirmed their participation. The second round of auctions was postponed from April 11 to April 26 to address issues raised by the bidders.

HDFC Bank set to meet liquidity norms post-merger

HDFC Bank is expected to comfortably meet reserve ratio requirements after its merger with parent HDFC Ltd, as it awaits a final view from the central bank on requests for forbearance. The $40 billion merger is expected to conclude by July. The bank has requested a phased approach to meet the requirements for the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) and cash reserve ratio (CRR), which are set at 18% and 4.5%, respectively. Tata Steel Ltd is reportedly in talks to raise up to $400 million in what could be its first green loan. The debt is expected to have a tenor of about five years, and the proceeds would be used for capital expenditure. The lenders involved in the talks include Bank of America Corp., HSBC Holdings Plc, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. However, no final decision has been made yet.

IHCL announces the signing of two new hotels in Dhaka

Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has announced the signing of two new hotels in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Taj and Vivanta branded hotels will be part of an integrated complex that will also include high-end retail. The mixed-use development project in Dhaka will feature a 230-room Taj hotel and a 130-room Vivanta hotel. The project is being carried out in partnership with Borak Real Estate of the Unique Group, one of the largest business conglomerates in Bangladesh.

ICICI Lombard Q4 Results: Net profit rises 40% YoY to Rs 437 crore

ICICI Lombard General Insurance reported 40% YoY growth in net profit of Rs 437 crore in Q4 FY23. Total income grew 13% YoY to 5,255 crores. The company’s gross premiums written for the quarter under review were Rs 5,340 crore, a 7% increase YoY. Net premium written rose 1.86% YoY to Rs 4,047 crore. The company’s income from investments rose 14% to Rs 616 crore. The company also declared a final dividend of Rs 5.50 per equity share.

Invesco exits ZEEL; sells entire stake for Rs 1,004 crore

US-based investment firm Invesco has divested its entire stake of 5.11% in Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) for Rs 1,004 crore through an open market transaction. The shares were sold by Invesco’s arm, OFI Global China Fund LLC, and were purchased by buyers, including Segantii India Mauritius, Morgan Stanley Asia Singapore Pte, and Goldman Sachs Singapore Pte ODI. The shares were sold at an average price of Rs 204.50 per share, resulting in a transaction value of Rs 1,004.34 crore.

Vedanta to start building semiconductor plant by Q3

Vedanta Group is expecting to start building its Rs 1.5 lakh crore semiconductor plant in the October-December quarter (Q3) of FY24. The company plans to start producing electronic chips by the first half of 2027. The Central govt will provide a 50% subsidy on the total cost of the project.

India’s forex reserves rise to $584.75 billion

India’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves increased by $6.30 billion to $584.75 billion for the week ended April 7, after declining by $329 million in the previous reporting week. The foreign currency assets increased by $4.74 billion to $514.431 billion for the week ended April 7. Gold reserves also rose by $1.49 billion to $46.69 billion. The country’s reserve position with the IMF also went up by $13 million to $5.17 billion in the reporting week.

Muthoot Finance said it completed the pre-payment of External Commercial Borrowings (ECB) of $225 million on April 13. ECBs are commercial loans widely used by eligible resident entities who raise ECBs from recognised non-resident entities. SBI keeps lending rates unchanged across tenures

State Bank of India (SBI) will keep the lending rates unchanged across tenures, effective April 15, 2023. Its 1-year Marginal Cost of Funds based Lending Rate (MCLR) remains unchanged at 8.50%. The MCLR is the minimum lending rate below which a bank is not permitted to lend. In February, SBI hiked its lending rates by 10 basis points (bps) across tenures.

Bodhi Tree has reduced its planned investment in Reliance Industries’ broadcast venture Viacom18 by 70% and will now pump in Rs 4,306 crore. In April 2022, Reliance Industries said that Qatar Investment Authority-backed Bodhi Tree would spend Rs 13,500 crore out of a planned Rs 15,145 crore investment in Viacom18. Bodhi Tree is a joint venture between James Murdoch and a former Star India executive.

NSE to introduce WTI crude oil, natural gas futures contracts from May 15

National Stock Exchange (NSE) will launch futures contracts on underlying WTI crude oil and natural gas in the commodity derivatives segment from May 15. This comes after the exchange received approval from markets regulator SEBI to launch the rupee-denominated Nymex WTI crude oil and natural gas futures contracts in its commodity derivatives segment. These contracts will expand NSE’s product offering in the energy basket and its overall commodity segment.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) became the first telecom operator to showcase its anti-phishing solution to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the Reserve Bank of India, and the Securities & Exchange Board of India. The operator showed an accuracy rate of over 99%. This means that its artificial intelligence (AI)-based solution (developed by Tanla Platforms) is stopping phishing attempts through SMSes most of the time.

The bank plans to utilize the balance of Rs 50,719.75 crore in its Securities Premium account to offset the losses. The Central government and the Life Insurance Corporation of India are currently in the process of selling their stake in the bank.

Coal India exceeds annual output target of 700 mn tonnes for first time in 17 years

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has exceeded its annual production target of 700 million tonnes (MT) for the first time in 17 years. It produced an estimated 703.4 MT in the financial year ended March 2023 (FY23). This marks a 13% increase from the previous year and the highest annual production volume in the company’s history. CIL is targeting a production of 780 MT in the upcoming financial year (FY24) to meet the increasing demand from India’s power utilities.

ZEEL enters into a one-time settlement with Standard Chartered Bank for credit facility availed by Siti Networks

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has reached a one-time settlement agreement with Standard Chartered Bank for a loan taken by Siti Networks, a subsidiary of the Essel Group. The bank had provided credit facilities to Siti Networks that were secured by a Debt Service Reserve Account (DSRA) support and undertaking from ZEEL. While the amount has not been disclosed, the settlement will resolve any outstanding issues related to the loan.

Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has been declared the lowest bidder for a project worth Rs 720.67 crore by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). The project involves the construction of a 7.192-kilometre-long six-lane elevated Kona expressway in West Bengal. 

Meanwhile, RVNL’s joint venture with Metrowagonmash & Locomotive Electronic System has received an order from the Ministry of Railways for manufacturing Vande Bharat Trainsets. The contract involves the supply of 200 trainsets, with a cost per set of Rs 120 crore.

Tata Power has shared a proposal to set up a high voltage 400 KV line corridor for Mumbai with the state government and the state regulatory authority. This new transmission corridor will help meet the city’s growing electricity demand and enhance electricity distribution to as high as 15,000MW in future. If approved, this project could take four-five years and may cost around Rs 1,000 crore.

Domestic oil demand growth to fall to 5% in FY24: Govt forecast

Domestic oil demand growth will slow to 5% in 2023-24 after a scorching expansion of nearly 10% in this financial year, said the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC). India will consume 233.8 million metric tonnes (MMT) of refined products in 2023-24, compared to the estimated consumption of 222.9 MMT in the current financial year (FY23) according to the forecast.

Dabur Ltd reported a 2.85% year-on-year (YoY) decline in consolidated net profit to ₹490.86 crore for the quarter ended Sept (Q2 FY23). Its revenue from operations rose 6% YoY to ₹2,986.49 crore during the same period. The company’s total expenses stood at ₹2,471.28 crore in Q2, up 8.94% YoY. Dabur India’s board has declared an interim dividend of ₹2.5 per share.

The FMCG major will acquire a 51% stake in Badshah Masala Pvt. Ltd for ₹587.52 crore. Badshah Masala manufactures, markets, and exports ground spices, blended spices, and seasonings.

Hero MotoCorp partners with Terrafirma Motors to enter Philippines market

Hero MotoCorp announced plans to enter the Philippines, for which it has partnered with Terrafirma Motors Corp (TMC) for the assembly and distribution of its vehicles. TMC will set up an assembly facility of 29,000 sq. metres in its existing principal manufacturing facility in Laguna City. It will start operations in the second half of FY24.

Gland Pharma Q2 Results: Net profit falls 20% YoY to ₹241 crore

Gland Pharma Ltd reported a 20.14% YoY decline in consolidated net profit to ₹241.24 crore for the quarter ended Sept (Q2 FY23). Its revenue from operations fell 3.33% YoY to ₹1,044.4 crore during the same period. The pharma company’s revenue from the Indian market fell 42% YoY to ₹72.6 crore in Q2.

Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Ltd has secured an order worth ₹60 for construction work of Amity Campus Hyderabad (Telangana) from Ritnand Salved Education Foundations. The company has secured another order worth ₹43 crore for the civil, structural, and external development work of a hospital from Muthoot Hospital Pvt. Ltd. The total order inflow during the current financial year (FY23) stands at ₹3,114.72 crore.

Century Textiles & Industries Ltd reported a 69.38% YoY increase in consolidated net profit to ₹69.97 crore for the quarter ended Sept (Q2 FY23). Its total income grew 20% YoY to ₹1,242.11 crore during the same period. Total expenses stood at ₹1,125.25 crore in Q2, up 15.75% YoY.

Zydus Lifesciences gets USFDA approval to market generic Micafungin injection

Zydus Lifesciences has received final approval from the US Food & Drug Administration to market its generic Micafungin injection. The drug is also used to prevent fungal infections in patients who are having a stem cell transplant. It will be produced at the pharma company’s injectable manufacturing facility at Jarod, near Vadodara.

Ramkrishna Forgings Ltd reported a 27% YoY increase in net profit to ₹64 crore for the quarter ended Sept (Q2 FY23). Its revenue from operations rose 31.7% YoY to ₹762.55 crore during the same period. Overall capacity utilization stood at 82.24% in Q2. The company will raise around ₹100 crore through the preferential issue of convertible warrants. The proceeds will be utilised to reduce debt.

ZEEL, Sony agree to sell 3 Hindi channels to address anti-competition concerns

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) and Sony India have voluntarily agreed to sell three Hindi channels (Big Magic, Zee Action, and Zee Classic) to address possible anti-competition concerns arising out of their proposed merger. They submitted their merger proposal to the Competition Commission of India (CCI), which cleared the deal subject to certain modifications on Oct. 4.
