India’s services PMI declines to 61.1 in May from 62.0 in April

India’s service sector Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) declined slightly to 61.2 in May from 62 in April. However, the sector continued to expand due to robust demand despite high inflationary pressures. This marks the longest expansion streak in nearly 12 years, with the index remaining above the 50-mark which signifies growth for 22 consecutive months. The services sector contributes over 50% to India’s GDP.

TCS receives 10-year contract for the teachers’ pension scheme in England and Wales

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been chosen by the Department for Education (DfE) in the UK. The contract is to administer and enhance the customer experience of the ‘Teachers’ Pension Scheme’, the country’s second-largest public sector pension scheme. With a long-term contract of 10 years, TCS will utilize its core banking software suite, TCS BaNCS, to manage the pension scheme, which covers over 2 million members in England and Wales.

Tata Power’s subsidiary Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has successfully commissioned a 110-MW solar power project in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The project will provide power to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). Despite challenges like difficult land topography, extreme weather conditions, and adverse geopolitical circumstances, the project was completed within a remarkable period of 7 months. It utilized 2,59,272 mono-bifacial PERC half-cell modules.

Dr Reddy’s rheumatoid arthritis drug meets all endpoints in Phase 1 study

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories has announced the successful Phase-I study of its Tocilizumab Biosimilar candidate, ‘DRL_TC’. The study evaluated its effectiveness in treating moderate-to-severe active rheumatoid arthritis and compared it to reference products. The results showed equivalence and similarity in pharmacodynamic parameters, safety, and immunogenicity. Dr Reddy’s had previously completed a successful phase I study of the biosimilar candidate administered subcutaneously.

Patel Engineering secures Rs 519.5 crore project from CIDCO

Patel Engineering Ltd has secured a new project worth Rs 519.5 crore. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) awarded the company a letter of acceptance (LoA) for the construction of a 6.7 km water tunnel in Maharashtra. The project, which includes associated works, will be executed solely by Patel Engineering within a timeframe of 60 months.

Lupin launches Darunavir tablets used in controlling HIV infections

Lupin Ltd has introduced Darunavir tablets, used to manage HIV infection, in the US market. The newly launched drug is a generic version of Janssen Products’ Prezista tablets. According to IQVIA data, Darunavir tablets had an estimated annual sales of $308 million in the US for the 12 months ending March 2023.

Nava’s Zambia subsidiary discharges all overdue loan instalments

Nava Ltd announced that its Zambian subsidiary, Maamba Collieries Ltd. (MCL), has successfully paid off all overdue loan installments. As a result, the company’s overall liabilities have reduced from $483 million in December 2022 to $206 million. MCL has also been meeting its regular debt service requirement since March 2023. Following this achievement, MCL plans to engage with lenders in future discussions, building on the positive progress made.

Bharat Petroleum starts pilot to test ED7 blend fuel

Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) has launched a pilot program in partnership with Ashok Leyland and Hero Mototcorp to test the effectiveness of the ED7 fuel blend. The blend, consisting of 93% diesel and 7% ethanol, aims to revolutionize India’s biofuel economy and establish a more stable energy mix. Ashok Leyland conducted laboratory trials on their engines using the ED7 fuel. BPCL’s initiative aligns with India’s goal of reducing import bills and promoting a cleaner, greener future.

UltraTech Cement to invest Rs 12,886 crore towards capacity expansion

UltraTech Cement Ltd’s board has approved a proposal to invest Rs 12,886 crore to add 22.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity to its total production. The company aims to set up integrated and grinding units and bulk terminals. These new capacities are expected to commence commercial production in a staggered way across India by the end of FY25.

Abdul Latif Jameel to invest Rs 150 million in Greaves Cotton’s EV arm

Saudi Arabia-based Abdul Latif Jameel International (ALJI) will invest $150 million (~Rs 1,160 crore) for a 35.8% stake in Greaves Electric Mobility (GEM). This values the electric vehicle (EV) arm at Rs 3,298 crore. ALJI has an option to invest another $70 million in the next twelve months. GEM has a strong presence in both electric 2-wheelers and electric 3-wheelers segments.

La Opala RG commences production at Uttarakhand unit

La Opala RG announced the commencement of commercial production at its green field plant at Sitarganj, Uttarakhand. The unit has a production capacity of 11,000 metric tons per annum. It is the second plant of the company in the state. La Opala RG is a pure-play tableware company. Its brands include La Opala, Diva, and Solitare.

The new product can be operated as a 25.5 tonne truck with lift axle down and an 18.5 tonne truck with lift axle up, offering lower fuel and operating costs during light load.

MG Motor India and Castrol India Ltd will partner with Jio-bp to explore mobility solutions for electric cars. The three entities will explore setting up a four-wheeler EV charging infrastructure and expand Castrol’s existing auto service network to cater to EV customers. This partnership is in line with Jio-bp and MG Motor’s commitment to providing vast and reliable charging infra to electric car customers and accelerating EV adoption in India.

GR Infra’s arm signs pact with NHAI for road project in Andhra Pradesh

GR Madanapalli Pileru Highway Pvt Ltd (GRMPHPL) has signed an agreement with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for a road project worth Rs 1,577 crore. The project consists of four-laning of NH-71 from Madanapalli to Pileru in Andhra Pradesh. The length of the road is 55.9 km. GRMPHPL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of GR Infraprojects Ltd.

SEBI penalises Eicher Motors for flouting rules

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh for failing to follow rules in the duplicate share certificates case. The company has to pay the fine within 45 days. The order comes after the SEBI received a complaint from Adesh Kaur against the automaker. It mentioned that 903 shares of the company were fraudulently transferred to an account of an impersonator who managed to forge her signature and change her address.

TVS Motors to invest Rs 1,200 crore in future technologies and EV

TVS Motor Company Ltd has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Govt of Tamil Nadu to invest Rs 1,200 crore in future technologies and electric vehicles (EVs) over the next four years. The investment would be for the design, development, and manufacturing of new products and capacity expansion in the EV space. TVS Motor said the signing of the MoU was in line with its firm belief in the potential of the state in terms of human resources, infrastructure, and overall business environment.

NCLAT stays Rs 200 crore penalty imposed by CCI on Maruti Suzuki

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has stayed the Rs 200 crore penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. However, NCLAT directed the automaker to deposit 10% of the total penalty amount with the NCLAT’s Registrar within three weeks. It will take up the appeal filed by Maruti Suzuki for admission on December 15.

On August 23, 2021, CCI had imposed a penalty of Rs 200 crore on MSIL for allegedly restraining competition with its policy of controlling the discounts that dealers could offer customers.

NPCI Bharat BillPay onboards Tata Power to facilitate electricity bill payments

NPCI Bharat BillPay has onboarded Tata Power on its platform ClickPay— making it the first power company to go live on the newly launched platform. Tata Power will generate the ClickPay link and share it with customers, which will redirect them to the payment page. This initiative will enable more than seven lakh customers of Tata Power to pay their electricity bills in a hassle-free and seamless manner.

KIOCL signs pact with Truman Engineering to set up heat recovery coke oven plant

KIOCL Ltd has entered into an agreement with Tauman Engineering Ltd for setting up a heat recovery coke oven plant at a contract price of Rs 185 crore. The plant will have a production capacity of 1,80,000 tonnes per annum (TPA). The company has signed a tripartite agreement with Tauman Engineering and CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research for providing the technology and know-how.

Alembic Pharma gets USFDA approval for formoterol fumarate inhalation solution

Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd has received final approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) for its generic version of formoterol fumarate inhalation solution. The drug is indicated for the treatment of constriction of airways in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. According to IQVIA data, the inhalation solution had a market size of $310 million (~Rs 2,308 crore) for twelve months ended September 2021.

Future Retail employees urge Supreme Court to clear asset sale in Amazon dispute

The Future Retail Employee Welfare Association has filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court (SC), seeking to intervene in the current proceedings of the company’s dispute with Amazon over its 2019 deal with Reliance. The association has stated that the interests of nearly 27,000 employees of Future Retail have been affected by the orders passed in arbitral proceedings. Amazon is trying to block the sale of Future Group’s retail, wholesale, and logistics business to Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) for Rs 24,713 crore for allegedly breaking contracts.

In other news, the SC has deferred the hearing in the legal tussle between Amazon and Future Group to December 8. This is on account of the inconvenience caused by the bulky documents placed on record by the parties.

Nxtra by Airtel launches new hyperscale data centre park in Chennai

Bharti Airtel Ltd’s subsidiary Nxtra launched its new 38 megawatts (MW) hyperscale data centre park in Chennai on Tuesday. The centre is fully integrated with Airtel’s global submarine cable network, providing an end-to-end secure connectivity solution to hyperscalers. Nxtra claims to operate the largest network of data centres in India. It aims to invest Rs 5,000 crore by 2025 to increase its data centre capacity three times to over 400 MW.

Greaves Electric Mobility inaugurates its largest EV production facility in Tamil Nadu

Greaves Cotton Ltd’s e-mobility arm, Greaves Electric Mobility, announced the opening of its largest EV production facility at Ranipet in Tamil Nadu. Spread across 35 acres, the plant is located in the industrial centre of Tamil Nadu. It will serve as an e-mobility hub for both domestic and export markets. The manufacturing facility with additional assembly lines will produce up to 10 lakh vehicles a year.

SpiceJet brings back Boeing 737 Max; customers to enjoy free onflight WiFi

SpiceJet Ltd has brought back Boeing 737 MAX aircraft into operation after a gap of around two-and-a-half years. Earlier this month, the airline had entered into an agreement with Boeing to settle outstanding claims related to the grounding of 737 Max aircraft and its return to service. SpiceJet has started flying two Boeing 737 Max planes in India, and 11 more such aircraft will start flying in India in the next 15-20 days. The domestic carrier will also offer free onboard WiFi on the Boeing 737 Max.

Jio-BP partners with BluSmart to set up EV charging stations

Jio-BP has partnered with electric ride-hailing platform BluSmart to set up a network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across India. As part of the partnership, Jio-BP will set up charging stations for passenger EVs and cabs across the country, starting with the National Capital Region (NCR). Each charging station will have the capacity to accommodate a minimum of 30 vehicles. Jio-BP is a joint venture between Reliance Industries Ltd and UK energy giant BP.

Govt gives final approval to privatise 13 airports

The board of the Aiport Authority of India (AAI) has given its approval to privatise 13 airports across India. The major airports at Bhubaneshwar, Varanasi, Amritsar, Trichy, Indore, Raipur, and seven smaller airports will be privatised. The government aims to generate Rs 3,660 crore of private investment into the airports by FY24. TCS signs 10-year digital contract with Transport for London

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has secured a ten-year contract from Transport for London to design, implement, and operate a cloud-based smart mobility system for the administration of taxis and private hire vehicles. TCS will build and operate a system for managing records, licensing payments, and refunds to vehicle operators and owners through digital channels. The IT major will design and launch the new system using its DigiGOV framework for rapid digital transformation.

Zydus Cadila has received tentative approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to market Brexpiprazole tablets. The drug is used as adjunctive therapy to antidepressants for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and schizophrenia. The product will be manufactured at Cadila’s formulation manufacturing facility at the SEZ, Ahmedabad.

Ashoka Buildcon Ltd has emerged as the lowest bidder (L-1) for a road project of National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL). The project consists of four-laning of the Kwaram Taro Village – Dillai section of NH-29 in Assam on an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode. The quoted bid price of the project is Rs 282.11 crore.

The Board of Directors of Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Ltd has approved the allotment of 4,000 listed, unsecured, rated, and redeemable non-convertible debentures (NCDs) of Rs 10 lakh each (aggregating to Rs 4,000 crore) on a private placement basis. The NCDs hold a coupon rate of 5.8% per annum. The date of allotment is Sept 9, 2021, and the date of maturity is Sept 9, 2024.

Blue Dart commences trials for vaccine delivery by drones

Blue Dart Express has partnered with drone delivery startup Skye Air to flag off the first drone flight for Telangana Government’s ‘Medicine from the Sky’ project. The trials for delivery of medicines and vaccines will be held in Vikarabad, Hyderabad, from Sept 9 till Oct 17. The drone flights will have consignments of vaccines, medical samples, and other healthcare items.
