Disney to sign multibillion-dollar deal with Reliance Industries

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is set to acquire Walt Disney Co’s (WDC) India operations in a cash and stock deal. WDC may sell a controlling stake in the Disney Star business, which it values at around $10 billion (~₹83.1 crore). RIL views the assets at between $7 billion to $ 8 billion. The acquisition could be announced as early as next month as some of Reliance’s media units merged into Disney Star.

Torrent Pharma Q2 Results: Net profit rises 24% YoY to ₹386 crore

Torrent Pharma posted a 24% YoY increase in net profit to ₹386 crore for the quarter ended September (Q2 FY24); beating street estimates. The pharma company posted a net profit of ₹312 crore in Q2 last year. Its total revenue rose 16.1% YoY to ₹2,660 crore in Q2 FY24. EBITDA stood at ₹825 crore, up 36.2% YoY.

Lupin gets USFDA nod to market generic antifungal tablets

Lupin Ltd has received approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) to market its generic Fluconazole tablets. The drug is used to treat fungal infections. The product will be manufactured at Lupin’s Pithampur facility in Madhya Pradesh. According to IQVIA MAT July 2023 data, the drug had an estimated annual sales of $43 million in the US.

Mahindra Holidays Q2 Results: Net profit falls 48% YoY to ₹21 crore

Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd (MHRIL) reported a 48% YoY decline in net profit to ₹21 crore for the quarter ended September 2023 (Q2 FY24). Net profit stood at ₹40.9 crore in the same period a year ago. Its total revenue rose 10% YoY to ₹655 crore in Q2 FY24. EBITDA stood at ₹136 crore, up 17% YoY.

ONGC wins bid to acquire PTC’s wind power unit for ₹925 cr

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has won a bid to acquire PTC India Ltd’s wind power unit for ₹925 crore as part of its renewable energy portfolio expansion. ONGC already has 189 MW of renewable energy capacity and aims to reach 10 GW by 2030. The acquisition, which has a renewable energy portfolio of 288.8 MW, is subject to the approval of PTC’s shareholders.

Consumer court asks ICICI Bank to pay ₹77,000 for denying reward points

ICICI Bank has been instructed by the District Consumer Disputes Grievance Redressal Commission to pay ₹77,000 to a man from Chennai. The payment is compensation for the denial of reward points by the bank. The bank will pay ₹41,691 in reward points and an additional ₹35,000 for the deficiency in service, compensation for mental agony, and mental agony.

Adani Power close to taking over Coastal Energen for ₹3,440 crore

Adani Power won a bid to take over bankrupt power company Coastal Energen for ₹3,440 crore. The interest in Coastal Energen (which is undergoing corporate insolvency) is mainly because it is among a few operational power plants for sale. Jindal Power, who also bid for the company, quit the auction.

IPCA Labs’ Ratlam facility gets favourable FDA classification

The USFDA has classified IPCA Laboratories Ltd’s’ Ratlam facility as ‘Voluntary Action Indicated’ (VAI) in its Establishment Inspection Report (EIR). A VAI is generally issued when the response from a plant to certain observations appears satisfactory to the regulator. The facility manufactures Active Pharma Ingredients (APIs). VAI is the second-best classification that a plant can get from the USFDA.

Aurobindo Pharma’s arm gets USFDA nod for testosterone cypionate injection

Aurobindo Pharma’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Eugia Pharma Specialties, has received the final approval from USFDA to manufacture and market the testosterone cypionate injection. This is bioequivalent and therapeutically equivalent to the reference listed drug, depo-testosterone injection. According to IQVIA data, the approved product has an estimated market size of $226.8 million for the 12 months ending August 2023.

BSE revises F&O turnover charges from Nov 1

Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has revised transaction charges in the equity derivatives segment, with effect from November 1, 2023. According to a BSE notice, these changes will primarily be levied on S&P BSE Sensex Options, particularly the nearest or immediate expiry contracts. The new transaction fee structure is based on the incremental billable monthly turnover (premium value).

Adani Transmission Ltd reported a 32% YoY decline in consolidated net profit to ₹194 crore in Q2 FY23. Its revenue from operations rose 22% YoY to ₹3,932 crore during the same period. EBITDA stood at ₹1,241 crore in Q2, up 7% YoY. The company sold 2,233 million units (MUs) of electricity in the quarter, up from 1,975 MU in the same period in FY21.

Alembic Pharmaceuticals received final approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for Mesalamine extended-release capsules. The drug is used to treat ulcerative colitis (an inflammatory bowel disease) and prevent the remission of the disease in adults. According to IQVIA data, the product had an estimated market size of ₹133 million for the 12 months ended June 2022.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will launch the sixth round of commercial coal mines auction on Thursday. The coal mines to be auctioned are fully-explored and partially-explored coking and non-coking mines. The auction will be held online through a transparent two-stage process based on percentage revenue share. So far, the coal ministry has auctioned 64 mines under commercial coal mines auction.

TCS Q1 Results: Net profit rises 5.21% YoY to Rs 9,478 crore

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a 5.21% YoY increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 9,478 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY23). Its revenue from operations grew 16.2% YoY to Rs 52,758 crore during the same period. The last twelve months IT services attrition rate stood high at 19.7%. The IT firm’s board has declared an interim dividend of Rs 8 per share.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M) hopes to sell two lakh electric vehicles (EVs) by FY27. It has begun a new path to grab a share of the shift towards electrification. The automaker plans to invest over $1 billion in the EV business and develop a portfolio of five EVs in the next five years. M&M recently raised ~Rs 1,980 crore from British International Investment (BII) for its new wholly-owned EV company.

Tata Motors’ global wholesales up 48% YoY to 3.16 lakh units in Q1

Tata Motors Ltd’s global wholesales (including JLR) increased by 48% YoY to 3,16,443 units in the April-June quarter (Q1 FY23). Global wholesales of all Tata Motors’ commercial vehicles and Tata Daewoo range in Q1 stood at 1,03,529 units, up 97.3% YoY. The company’s global sales of all passenger vehicles rose 31% YoY to 2,12,914 units.

City Union Bank has partnered with Shriram General Insurance to distribute insurance products across the bank’s 727 branches in India. The deal gives space for Shriram General to offer personal lines of insurance products such as motor, personal accident, home, and travel. Mahindra Holidays plans to add 1,000 rooms in next 2-3 years

Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd (MHRIL) plans to add ~1,000 rooms in the next 2-3 years, said chairman Arun Nanda. The company is looking at greenfield projects, expansion of existing facilities, acquisitions, and lease opportunities to drive significant growth in room inventory in the next few years. MHRIL added 385 rooms during the financial year 2021-22 (FY22). The total room inventory now stands at 4,568 units across 84 resorts.

Kotak Mahindra Bank has acquired the agriculture and healthcare equipment financing portfolio of asset finance company DLL India. DLL India is a subsidiary of Netherland-based De Lage Landen International B.V., owned by Rabobank. With this acquisition, the bank will gain access to over 25,000 customers with a total standard loan outstanding of ~Rs 582 crore. Kotak Mahindra Bank has also acquired the non-performing assets (NPA) portfolio of DLL India with a total loan outstanding of ~Rs 69 crore.

Investor flow to equity mutual fund schemes fall 16% in June: AMFI

Net investments into equity and equity-linked schemes fell 16.3% over the previous month to Rs 15,497.7 crore in June. The number of systematic investment plan (SIP) accounts stood at an all-time high at 5.54 crore and monthly SIP contribution at Rs 12,276 crore in June. The net assets under management  (AUM) for the Indian mutual fund industry stood at Rs 35.64 lakh crore in June, registering a 6% YoY growth. The data was released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).

HAL, Safran to develop new helicopter engines

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has signed an agreement with France-based Safran Helicopter Engines to create a new joint venture (JV) to develop helicopter engines. The JV will meet the requirements of HAL and the Ministry of Defence’s future helicopters, including the 13-tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH). This partnership will involve and utilise the Indian defence manufacturing ecosystem within India.

Oil & Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), Oil India Ltd. (OIL), and Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL) have walked away with most of the eight blocks offered for exploration and production of oil and gas in the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP) 7th bidding round. ONGC won three blocks in this round, while OIL won two. GAIL won one block in Rajasthan. The government has now launched the OALP Bid Round-VIII for 10 blocks.

Manufacturing PMI rises to 54.7 in April

India’s manufacturing activity picked up marginally in April after decelerating to a six-month low in March. The IHS Markit India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 54.7 in April 2022, compared to 54 in March. Input costs rose to their fastest pace since November. PMI is a month-on-month calculation, and a value above 50 represents an expansion when compared to the previous month.

Power Grid Corporation India Ltd (PGCIL) will purchase IL&FS Energy Development Company Ltd’s (IEDCL) equity shareholding in Cross Border Power Transmission Company Ltd (CPTCL). PGCIL’s board has cleared the proposal for the purchase of 77,30,225 equity shares of IEDCL in CPTCL. Currently, Power Grid owns a 26% stake in CPTCL, while IEDCL holds a 38% stake.

HDFC Q4 Results: Net profit rises 16% YoY to Rs 3,700  crore

HDFC Limited reported a 16.4% YoY increase in net profit to Rs 3,700 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4 FY22). Its net interest income (NII) rose 14% YoY to Rs 4,601 crore during the same period. [NII is the difference between the interest income a bank earns on loans and the interest it pays depositors.] Its loan book grew 14% YoY to Rs 5.55 lakh crore, driven by lending to affordable housing and high-end properties. HDFC’s board has declared a dividend of Rs 30 per share for FY22.

Its resort occupancies stood at 77% in Q4.

Route Mobile Ltd (RML) will acquire the artificial intelligence-based blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform of Teledgers Technology for ~Rs 130 crore. The acquisition will enable Route Ledger (a subsidiary of RML) to offer DLT and encrypted messaging solutions to mobile network operators. Route Mobile intends to enable telecom operators & enterprises with DLT Platform across Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific.

LIC IPO’s Rs 5,630 crore anchor book oversubscribed: Report

According to a CNBC-TV18 report, LIC IPO’s Rs 5,630 crore anchor book saw an overwhelming response and was oversubscribed. Earlier reports stated that Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Nomura, Singapore’s GIC Pte, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, and SBI Mutual Fund would be among those who may bid for the LIC’s anchor book.

Auto sales data for April 2022: Highlights  

Maruti Suzuki India posted a 5.6% year-on-year (YoY) decline in total sales to 1,50,661 units in April 2022. Sales of its compact vehicle segment fell 21.6% YoY to 76,321 units. Exports rose 6.8% to 18,413 units.

Tata Motors Ltd registered a 73% YoY increase in total domestic sales to 72,468 units in April. The automaker’s commercial vehicle sales rose 87% YoY to 30,838 units. Overall passenger vehicle wholesales rose 66% YoY to 41,587 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra’s auto segment posted total sales of 54,640 units in April, an increase of 25% YoY. M&M’s farm equipment segment posted a 49% YoY fall in sales to 40,939 units. 

Hero Motocorp posted a 12.45% YoY increase in total sales to 4,18,622 units in April.

Vedanta to invest up to $20 billion in semiconductor business in India

Vedanta Ltd has earmarked $15 billion for its foray into the electronic chip and display manufacturing space. The conglomerate plans to scale up the investment to as much as $20 billion (~Rs 1.49 lakh crore). Vedanta’s group firm Avanstrate will spearhead the semiconductor business. It expects to roll out electronic chips and displays from Indian manufacturing plants by 2025.

Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd will sell its entire 10.76% stake in Nreach Online Services Pvt Ltd to Gift Management Asia Pte Ltd (GMAPL) for a consideration of Rs 29.31 crore. The company has entered into an agreement with GMAPL for the sale of its entire investment consisting of 5,738 equity shares in Nreach Online Services. The transaction is expected to be completed on or before July 31, 2022.

Coal India’s fuel supply stands at 575 MT so far in FY22

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has supplied 575 million tonnes (MT) of coal so far this financial year (FY22), surpassing the total dispatch of dry fuel in 2020-21. The company had dispatched 574.5 MT of coal in FY21. Meanwhile, coal imports were down to a nine-year low due to a sharp increase in international coal prices. 

CIL has warned that the production of coal may fall if the company is not able to raise prices. It is facing cost pressures from a looming rise in salaries and on higher prices of diesel used to power mining equipment.

IndiGo takes delivery of A320 neo plane powered with sustainable aviation fuel

IndiGo has taken delivery of its first aircraft from Airbus (A320 neo) that operated on a blend of sustainable aviation fuel and normal fuel. The airline’s CEO, Ronojoy Dutta, said they are also talking to a lot of manufacturers on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Over a period from 2016 to 2023, IndiGo is aiming at a 16% reduction in carbon emissions.

Domestic air traffic falls 43% to 64.08 lakh passengers in Jan: DGCA

Domestic air traffic fell around 43% to 64.08 lakh passengers in January 2022. The passenger load factors (or occupancy rates) fell for all Indian carriers last month. SpiceJet reported the highest seat occupancy of 73.4% in Jan, compared to 80.2% in December. IndiGo registered a load factor of 66.6% in Jan, compared to 78.1% in Dec. The data was released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank announce subscription to IDRCL shares

Canara Bank has picked up a 14.9% stake in India Debt Resolution Company Ltd (IDRCL), while Bank of Baroda bought 12.3% in it. IDRCL is an asset management company set up by the government. It will work in association with the National Asset Reconstruction Company Ltd (NARCL) to clean up the banking sector’s bad loans (NPAs). IDRCL will provide management and resolution of assets acquired by NARCL.

Indian Oil sets up 1,000 EV charging stations

India’s largest oil refiner Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) has set up 1,000 electric vehicle charging stations. Now, IOCL has EV charging points in more than 500 towns and cities, including multiple state and national highways. It has collaborated with Tata Power PowerGrid, NTPC, Tech Mahindra, Ola, and BHEL for setting up EV chargers at its fuel stations. The company is targeting to provide EV charging facilities at 10,000 fuel stations in the next three years.

Oil India to set up green hydrogen plant in Assam

Oil India Ltd (OIL) has announced plans to set up a plant to manufacture green hydrogen at its Jorhat oilfield in Assam. The hydrogen generated from the plant will be blended with natural gas using existing infrastructure. Hydrogen, being the cleanest form of energy, is the latest focus area across the globe to meet rising energy needs. Green hydrogen is derived from water electrolysis, using renewable energy such as solar or wind.

RBL Bank’s financial health stable, no reason for depositors to worry: RBI

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that RBL Bank’s financial health remains stable, and there was no reason for depositors and other stakeholders to react to speculative reports. It further added that the bank was well capitalised, and its financial position remains ‘satisfactory’.

RBL Bank’s shares fell ~23% intraday on Monday after a series of developments over the weekend confused investors. In two separate regulatory statements, the bank said that RBI has appointed chief general manager Yogesh Dayal to its board as an additional director and that RBL Bank’s chief executive officer Vishwavir Ahuja will go on immediate leave.

IndusInd Bank has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to facilitate real-time cross-border money transfers by using UPI IDs of beneficiaries. With this initiative, IndusInd Bank has become the first Indian bank to go live on UPI for cross-border payments or NRI remittances. The bank plans to add more partners in various other countries for cross-border payments via UPI in the near future.

Tata Group’s growth strategy to be based on digital, energy, supply chain, and health themes: N Chandrasekaran

Tata Group’s future growth strategy will be based on four themes: digital, new energy, supply chain resilience, and health, said Chairman N Chandrasekaran. In a new year message to employees, he said that the group is becoming simpler and financially stronger than it has been in a long time. He further said that Tata Group has made good progress in addressing carbon footprint and positioning its companies to benefit from revolutionary new technologies.

Mahindra Holidays & Resorts to add over 300 rooms by March 

Mahindra Holidays & Resorts Ltd (MHRL) plans to add over 300 rooms by March 2022 to take the overall inventory to 4,500 keys. This move is part of the planned Rs 1,200 crore capital investment to add over 1,000 rooms in the next three years ending FY24. MHRL operates under the flagship Club Mahindra brand of membership-only resorts. It operates 78 properties (offering 4,197 keys) and has been clocking about 80% occupancy in the third quarter of FY22.

Ashoka Buildcon arm signs share purchase agreements worth Rs 1,337 crore with Galaxy Investments

Ashoka Concessions Ltd (ACL) has entered into share subscription and share purchase agreements with Galaxy Investments II Pte. Ltd for sale of the entire share capital of several of its subsidiaries. The aggregate consideration received for the sales is Rs 1,337 crore. The transactions are subject to the completion of certain conditions, including approval of the lenders of the respective subsidiaries and the National Highway Authority of India. ACL is a material subsidiary of Ashoka Buidcon Ltd.

Adani Group to start exporting coal from controversial Australian mine

The Adani Group’s Carmichael coal mine in Australia will begin exporting coal after battling a seven-year campaign by climate activists and defying a global push away from fossil fuels.  The group is preparing to export high-quality, low sulphur coal and is due to begin shipping before the end of the year. The Carmichael mine will be a vital source of supply for importers such as power plants in India.

Paras Defence secures DRDO contract for border surveillance tech

Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) has selected Paras Defence & Space Technologies Ltd (PDSTL) as one of the companies for handing over the technology of border surveillance systems. This technology has been transferred by a licensing agreement for the Transfer of Technology (ToT) for border surveillance systems entered between PDSTL, Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE), and DRDO. This system will provide all-weather surveillance for day and night monitoring of the border areas.
