May WPI inflation falls to -3.48%, lowest since November 2015

According to the Ministry of Commerce, India’s wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation fell from -0.92% in April to -3.48% in May. WPI is at its lowest level since November 2015, marking the second consecutive month of negative wholesale inflation in India. Food wholesale inflation declined to -1.59%, while inflation in the fuel and power category reached -9.17%. Additionally, inflation in manufactured products decreased from -2.42% to -2.97% in May.

Indian Oil Corp to set up aviation fuel plant with LanzaJet in Haryana

Indian Oil Corp Ltd (IOCL) plans to establish an 80,000 tonnes sustainable aviation fuel plant in partnership with LanzaJet in Haryana. The project is estimated to require an investment of approximately $280.1 million (~Rs 2,300 crore). IOCL is currently undertaking a pilot project for green fuel in collaboration with Praj Industries in Maharashtra.

PV Wholesales Rise 13.54% in May – Top Indian Market Updates

Passenger vehicle wholesales rise 13.54% in May at 3.3 lakh units

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), wholesale domestic passenger vehicle (PV) sales in May increased by 13.54% YoY to 3,34,247 units, compared to 2,94,392 units in May FY22. Domestic two-wheeler sales rose 17.42% YoY to 14,71,550 units in May FY23. Overall, total vehicle dispatches across categories in May were recorded at 18,08,686 units, up from 15,32,861 units in May 2022.

Tyre major MRF Ltd. saw its share price climb above the ₹1 lakh mark in intraday trading on the BSE and NSE today, making it the first Indian stock to trade above the six-figure mark. According to IQVIA MAT data 2023, Varenicline tablets had annual sales of $501 million in the US.

HFCL receives Rs 80 crore order from DMRC for three priority corridors

HFCL Ltd has secured a new order worth Rs 80.92 crore from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The order is for the implementation of a fibre optics transmission system in three priority corridors of Phase IV of the Delhi metro rail project. The contract includes the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the system. The project timeline is 156 weeks from the date of notice to proceed (NTP).

India’s retail inflation eases to a 2-year low of 4.25% in May

According to the Ministry of Statistics, India’s retail inflation has eased to a two-year low of 4.25% in May 2023, compared to 4.7% in April. Retail inflation is measured by Consumer Price Index (CPI). The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) also eased to 2.91% in May from 3.84 % in April. Rural inflation stood at 4.17%, while urban inflation stood at 4.27 %.

India’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) increased by 4.2% in April, up from 1.1% in March 2023 and down from 6.7% in April 2022. The manufacturing sector’s output grew by 4.9% in April 2023 compared to 5.6% a year ago. Power generation declined by 1.1% and mining output rose by 5.1% during the same period.

India’s domestic air passenger traffic up by 2.3% in May

According to ICRA, the domestic air passenger traffic was estimated at 131.8 lakh in May, about 2.3% higher than 128.9 lakhs in April 2023. Further, it witnessed a 15% YoY growth of about 15%, compared to May 2022. Domestic passenger traffic in May 2023 was higher by about 8% compared to the pre-Covid levels (that is, May 2019). The airlines’ capacity deployment in May 2023 was higher by 1.4%  than that of May 2022, reaching the pre-Covid levels (May 2019).

According to a CNBC-TV18 report, the family of IndiGo’s co-founder Rakesh Gangwal is likely to sell a 5-8% stake in the Indian airline’s parent InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, which is worth up to ₹7,500 crore. Rakesh Gangwal and his wife, Shobha Gangwal, hold 13.23% and 2.99%, respectively, in InterGlobe as of March 31, 2023.  Their Chinkerpoo Family Trust holds a 13.5% stake in the airline.

SpiceJet has initiated the process of reviving its grounded fleet with the $50 million funds received by the airline from the government’s Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) and internal cash accruals. India’s manufacturing PMI hits a three-month high of 56.4 in March

India’s manufacturing sector expanded at its quickest pace in three months in March on improved output and new orders. The S&P Global India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 56.4 in March, compared to 55.3 in Feb. Foreign demand for Indian goods increased as well, with new export orders rising in March.

PMI is a month-on-month calculation, and a value above 50 represents an expansion compared to the previous month.

Auto sales data for March 2023: Highlights  

Maruti Suzuki India wholesale sales remained flat at 1.70 lakh units in March 2023. Sales of its mini & compact vehicle segment fell 14% YoY to 83,714 units. Exports rose 13.7% YoY to 30,119 units.

Tata Motors Ltd registered a 4% YoY increase in passenger vehicle sales to 44,225 units in March. The automaker’s commercial vehicle sales remained flat at 46,823 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra’s total passenger vehicle segment posted total sales of 35,997 units in March, an increase of 30% YoY. M&M’s tractor sales rose 18% YoY to 35,014 units. 

TVS Motor Company’s total sales stood at 3.17 lakh units in March, up 3% YoY.

Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has reported a 5.3% year-on-year rise in crude steel production to a record 18.28 million tonnes (MT) in the financial year 2022-23, with hot metal production up 3.6% YoY to 19.40 MT. SpiceJet Ltd has separated its cargo and logistics business, SpiceXpress, into a separate entity named SpiceXpress and Logistics Pvt Ltd. The move has resulted in a one-time gain of Rs 2,555.77 crore for SpiceJet. The separation also enables SpiceXpress to raise funds independently. SpiceXpress, which reported a net profit of Rs 51.4 crore for the April-December period of FY23, is expected to attract more investments and partnerships to further grow its business.

Yulu, a shared electric Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform, has partnered with food delivery platform Zomato to use Yulu DeX EVs for intra-city deliveries. Yulu will provide about 25,000-35,000 Yulu DeX to delivery partners onboarded on Zomato’s platform for last-mile deliveries on custom-made rental plans. Once deployed, these Yulu DeX have the potential of serving 3 lakh green deliveries every day by 2026.

Oil prices surged nearly 8% today morning, with Brent Crude making a high of $86.44 after Saudi Arabia and OPEC+ announced a surprise cut in production of around 1.16 million barrels per day. West Texas Intermediate or WTI Crude prices also surged up to 7.5% to $81.58 per barrel. The cuts will begin in May and go on till the end of the year.

As per an ET report, SpiceJet Ltd has received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for wet leasing five Boeing 737 Max planes for up to six months. The airline has already deployed two of the aircraft on different routes. The remaining three aircraft will be inducted into SpiceJet’s fleet in the coming weeks. India’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves fell to a two-year low for the week ended October 14. Forex reserves fell by ₹3.85 billion to ₹524.42 billion for the week ending Oct 21. SpiceJet to send 80 pilots on leave without pay

SpiceJet Ltd will send around 80 pilots on Leave Without Pay (LWP) as the airline finds itself with excess pilots. Around 40 pilots from the Boeing 737 fleet and 40 from the Q400 fleet have been asked to go on LWP for three months. The airline will call them back gradually as it deploys new aircraft into its fleet. SpiceJet plans to add seven new Boeing 737 Max starting from December 2022.

Hero MotoCorp, HPCL to set up charging infrastructure for EVs

Hero MotoCorp Ltd has partnered with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) to set up charging infrastructure for electric vehicles across India. The companies will first set up charging stations in select cities and expand to other key markets to establish a high-density of EV charging station network. They will initially establish charging infrastructure at HPCL’s existing network of energy stations.

Piramal Enterprises to raise ₹750 crores via NCDs

Piramal Enterprises Ltd’s board has approved a proposal to raise ₹750 crore through the issuance of non-convertible debentures (NCDs). It will raise market-linked NCDs on a private placement basis up to ₹100 crore along with an option to retain oversubscription of up to ₹650 crore. The debentures will be listed on the debt segment and capital market segment of NSE and BSE, respectively.

Zydus Lifesciences launches cancer drug in the US

Zydus Lifesciences Ltd has announced the launch of Lenalidomide capsules in the US. The drug is used to treat various types of cancer. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells. Lenalidomide can also treat anemia in patients with certain blood/bone marrow disorders. Zydus will maufacture the drug at its manufacturing facility at the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Ahmedabad.

Adani pledges stake worth $13 billion in newly acquired Holcim cement units

The Adani Group has pledged shares valued at around $13 billion (~₹1.03 lakh crore) in two cement firms days after it completed the acquisition from Holcim Ltd. Stakes in two companies (57% of ACC and 63% in Ambuja Cements Ltd.) have been pledged for “the benefit of certain lenders and other finance parties”. The buyouts from Holcim earlier this year marked the group’s entry into the cement business.

Adani Transmission to invest over ₹5,000 crore in FY24-25

Adani Transmission Ltd. is planning to invest over ₹5,000 crore to add more capacity in each of the next two financial years. The company aims to increase the share of its renewable energy capacity to 60% by FY26-27. Currently, Adani Trans holds a portfolio of 18,795 circuit kilometers (ckm) of transmission lines and 40,001 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of power transformation capacity across 13 states.

India to grow at over 7% in FY23: CEA

Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran said the Indian economy will grow at 7% in FY23, down from the 8-8.5% growth rate projected in January. The aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are hurting economic growth. India can sustain the 7% growth rate for the rest of the decade, he added.
