HDFC-HDFC Bank merger gets NCLT approval

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has given its approval to the HDFC-HDFC Bank merger. In April 2022, HDFC Bank agreed to take over the biggest domestic mortgage lender in a deal valued at about $40 billion. The proposed entity will have a combined asset base of around Rs 18 lakh crore. The merger is expected to be completed by the second or third quarter of FY24.

Tata ceases discussions with Bisleri to acquire the packaged water giant

Tata Consumer Products has ended discussions with Bisleri for the potential acquisition of the packaged water giant. In November 2022, owners of Bisleri International said they will divest the company to the Indian conglomerate for an estimated ₹6,000-7,000 crore. Bisleri’s owners were reportedly looking to raise about $1 billion from a deal.

Bharti Airtel launches unlimited 5G data offer

Bharti Airtel has launched an unlimited 5G data offer to hold on to its higher-paying postpaid users and also push its 4G users to upgrade to its next-gen wireless broadband service. This move comes after Reliance Jio’s new postpaid plans were announced earlier this week. The unlimited 5G data offer will be available to all postpaid customers as well as prepaid ones with data plans of Rs 239 and above.

Va Tech Wabag secures order worth Rs 800 crore in Bangladesh

VA Tech Wabag has secured a Rs 800 crore project funded by the World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Bangladesh. The company will design, build and operate a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 200 million litre per day (MLD) in Dhaka. This project has the potential to be expanded to 600 MLD in the future

Zee Entertainment calls report of $10 million repayment ‘speculative’

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) called the report saying it will repay $10 million to IndusInd to wrap the Sony deal as “speculative”. The media company said it is exploring several strategies related to the ongoing dispute. On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that ZEEL has agreed to repay its dues to the IndusInd Bank to resolve insolvency proceedings against it and get a step closer to completing its merger with the Sony Group.

GAIL (India) Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shell Energy India for exploring ethane sourcing and other energy value chain opportunities. Through this agreement, GAIL expects to dive into the prospects of importing and handling different hydrocarbons that serve as essential chemical and petrochemical precursors. The company said this is a step towards achieving improved sustenance in business operations.

Unichem Laboratories Ltd has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for its Ranolazine Extended-Release tablet. The drug is prescribed for the treatment of chronic angina (a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart). The product will be commercialised from its manufacturing facility in Goa.

Maiden Forgings to launch IPO next week

Steel bars and wires manufacturer Maiden Forgings will launch an Initial Public Offering (IPO) to raise Rs 24 crore. The IPO will open on March 22 and close on March 24. Out of the total 37,84,000 equity shares on offer, not more than 17,97,000 equity shares have been reserved for Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB). A total of 5,39,100 shares have been reserved for Non-Institutional Investors (NII) and the rest for retail individual investors.

WPI Eases to 10.7% in Sept – Top Indian Market Updates

WPI eases to 10.7% in September

India’s wholesale inflation, measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), eased to 10.70% in September. WPI had spiked to 12.41% in August, while the revised WPI for July stood at 14.07%. The food articles segment eased to 11.03% in September, compared to 12.37% in August. The fuel and power segment marginally fell from 33.67% in August to 32.61% last month.

Federal Bank Q2 Results: Net profit rises 53% YoY to ₹704 crore

Federal Bank posted its highest-ever quarterly profit of ₹704 crore for the quarter ended September (Q2 FY23), up 53% YoY or 17% QoQ. The net interest income (NII) grew 19% YoY to ₹1,762 crore during the same period. [NII is the difference between the interest income a bank received on loans and the interest it pays depositors.] The gross non-performing assets ratio (GNPA) stood at 2.46% in Q2, compared to 2.69% in Q1. Provisions fell 9% YoY to ₹268 crore in Q2 FY23.

The bid value for the project is worth ₹345.30 crore. PSP Projects is one of India’s fastest-growing construction companies based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It provides construction services for industrial, institutional, residential, and commercial projects in India. 

Bajaj Auto Q2 Results: Net profit rises 20% YoY to ₹1,530 crore

Bajaj Auto Ltd reported a 20% YoY increase in net profit to ₹1,530 crore for the quarter ended September (Q2 FY23). Its revenue from operations rose 16.4% YoY to ₹10,202.8 crore during the same period. EBITDA rose 25.5% YoY to ₹1,759 crore. The company sold 11,51,012 units in Q2, up 0.57% YoY. Bajaj Auto saw domestic volumes nearly double from Q1 across both two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments.

EaseMyTrip launches SIP scheme for travel plans

Online travel platform EaseMyTrip has announced the launch of a new product line— Save Now Buy Later (SNBL). It is an investment scheme that allows customers to start a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) for their travel plans. Customers can invest an amount as low as ₹100 on a recurring basis. Investments will get a return of up to 20% on the total invested amount exclusively from the company.

Shree Cement Q2 Results: Net profit falls 67% YoY to ₹183 crore

Shree Cement Ltd reported a 67.5% YoY decline in consolidated net profit to ₹183.24 crore for the quarter ended Sept (Q2 FY23). Its revenue from operations rose 19.7% YoY to ₹4,038.03 crore during the same period. Total expenses increased by 41.4% YoY to ₹3956.90 crore in Q2. The company’s board has accepted the resignation of its long-serving Chairman Benu Gopal Bangur.

L&T Construction secures order under its water and effluent treatment business

Larsen & Toubro Ltd’s construction arm has secured significant orders (in the range of ₹1,000-2,500 crore) under its water & effluent treatment business. It has received repeat orders from the Govt. of Gujarat to execute pumping system and pipeline works from Tappar Dam to Nirona Dam. The project aims to strengthen water resources in the Kutch district of Gujarat by filling existing reservoirs that will irrigate 36,392 hectares of land.

Tata Elxsi Q2 Results: Net profit rises 39% YoY to ₹174 crore

Tata Elxsi Ltd reported a 39.1% YoY increase in net profit to ₹174.3 crore for the quarter ended Sept (Q2 FY23). Net profit declined by 5.5% when compared to the previous quarter. Its revenue from operations rose 28.2% YoY (or 5.1% QoQ) to ₹763.2 crore during the same period. The company crossed the 11,000-employee mark with 1,532 net additions in Q2.

WPI inflation eases to 13.93% in July

India’s wholesale inflation fell to 13.93% in July due to easing prices of food and manufactured products. The wholesale price index (WPI) stood at 15.18% in June and at a record 16.63% (revised) in May. Inflation in the food articles segment eased to 10.77% in July, compared to 14.39% in June. The fuel and power segment surged 43.75% last month from 40.33% in June.

Adani Logistics has acquired inland container depot (ICD) Tumb from Navkar Corporation for Rs 835 crore. ICD Tumb is one of the largest inland container depots and has a capacity of 0.5 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). The ICD is strategically located between the Hazira Port in Gujarat and the Nhava Sheva Port in Mumbai. Adani Logistics is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ).

SpiceJet enters into settlement agreement with Goshawk Aviation, affiliates

SpiceJet Ltd has entered into a settlement with aircraft lessor Goshawk Aviation and its affiliated entities related to two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and one Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft. This settlement will allow two more fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to enter SpiceJet’s fleet. Goshawk Aviation Ltd is one of the main lessors (an entity that leases a property to another) of MAX aircraft of SpiceJet.

Wockhardt Ltd has initiated a global Phase-III clinical study of its new antibiotic candidate WCK 5222. The company has completed the first site initiation visit for the study. Concord Biotech, a fermentation-based active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) maker, filed a Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with market regulator SEBI for an initial public offering (IPO). As per reports, the IPO’s size would be Rs 2,000-2500 crore. The issue with a face value of Rs 1 per equity share is a complete offer for sale (OFS) aggregating to 2.09 crore equity shares by Helix Investment Holdings Pte. Ltd.

Future Consumer defaults on Rs 51.85 cr payment towards debentures

Future Consumer Ltd (FCL) has defaulted on the payment of Rs 51.85 crore towards principal and interest due on non-convertible debentures (NCDs). The default includes an interest amount of Rs 10.73 crore and a principal amount of Rs 41.12 crore. The NCDs were allocated on February 15, 2018, with a coupon rate of 11.07% per annum. As of June 30, 2022, the total financial indebtedness of FCL (including short-term and long-term borrowings) was Rs 446.82 crore.

Indian Oil aims to restart Paradip refinery from mid-Sept: Report

As per a report by Economic Times (ET), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) will restart crude processing at its 300,000 barrels per day Paradip refinery in eastern Odisha from mid-September after a 45-day maintenance turnaround. While the crude unit was shut from Aug. 1, the naphtha hydrotreater, continuous catalytic reformer, diesel hydrotreater, coker, and alkylation units were shut sequentially.

Amul, Mother Dairy hikes milk prices by Rs 2 per litre

Leading milk suppliers Mother Dairy and Amul have increased milk prices in Delhi-NCR and other cities by Rs 2 per litre due to a rise in its procurement and other input costs. Prices of toned milk will increase to Rs 51, while double toned milk will rise to Rs 45 per litre. Cow milk prices have been hiked to Rs 53 per litre.

Avenue Supermarts Q1 Results: Net profit jumps 132% YoY to Rs 115 crore

Avenue Supermarts Ltd reported a 132.3% YoY jump in net profit to Rs 115 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY22). Its total revenues rose 31.3% YoY to Rs 5,032 crore during the same period. Net profit and revenues have declined by 73.5 and 31%, respectively, when compared to the previous quarter. Equitas SFB gets RBI approval to apply for scheme of amalgamation

Equitas Small Finance Bank (SFB) has received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to apply for the scheme of amalgamation of Equitas Holdings Ltd (the promoter) with the bank. The approval of the application would result in the promoter’s exit from Equitas SFB. Following the approval, Equitas Holdings said they would be initiating steps to finalise the scheme of amalgamation, submit it to the boards of the company and Equitas SFB for approval.

Mahindra hikes prices of all cars by up to Rs 1 lakh

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M) has announced a substantial hike in the prices of all the models in its lineup. The Mahindra Thar gets the highest revision, with some of its variants becoming expensive by approximately Rs 1 lakh. The price of XUV500 has gone up from Rs 2,912 to Rs 3,188, depending upon the variant. This is the third price hike that Mahindra has introduced this year.

Mobikwik all set to file DRHP within a week: Report

According to a report from Bloomberg, Mobikwik is planning to raise $250-300 million (Rs 1,860-2,200 crore) through an initial public offering (IPO). The digital payments startup is set to file a Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with market regulator SEBI within a week. Last month, the company closed a $20 million (~Rs 150 crore) funding round from Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), valuing it at $700 million (~Rs 5,200 crore).

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced plans to hire more than 40,000 freshers from campuses across India in the current financial year (FY 2021-22). The IT company had hired 40,000 graduates from campuses last year. Currently, TCS has an employee base of more than 5 lakh. TCS reported a higher attrition rate of 8.6% in Q1 FY22, compared to 7.2% in Q4 FY21.

Unichem Laboratories Ltd has received approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) of Sitagliptin tablets. The drug is used to improve glycemic control in adults with Type-2 diabetes. Upon the receipt of final USFDA approval, the tablets will be manufactured at Unichem Lab’s plant in Goa.

Godrej Properties to invest over $1 billion in next couple of years: Chairman

Pirojsha Godrej, the Executive Chairman of Godrej Properties, said the company plans to invest more than $1 billion (~Rs 7,400 crore) over the next couple of years to develop new projects. This will be part of the real estate developer’s target to achieve higher growth. The chairman further said Godrej Properties was India’s largest developer in terms of value and volume of sales achieved in FY21. The company registered a 14% YoY growth in sales bookings to a record Rs 6,725 crore in FY21.

Vodafone Idea in talks with Apollo Global to raise up to $3 billion: Report

According to a report from ET, Vodafone Idea Ltd (Vi) has started talks with US private equity major Apollo Global Management to secure up to $3 billion (~Rs 22,400 crore) in funding over the next three months. The telecom company aims to use the funds to meet its upcoming debt payments and dues related to adjusted gross revenue (AGR) and spectrum allocation. The report further states that Apollo Global is drilling Vi on points of business valuation and the structure of funding.

India’s fuel demand rebounds in June as lockdowns ease

Overall fuel demand in India rebounded in June after falling drastically to a nine-month low in May. Fuel consumption rose 8% to 16.33 million tonnes (MT) in June over May 2021. Petrol sales stood at 2.4 MT in June, registering a 21% increase when compared to May. Meanwhile, the total sale of diesel rose 12% month-on-month (MoM) to 6.2 MT. The data was released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Bosch Q4 Results: Net profit jumps 5 times to Rs 482 crore

Bosch Limited reported a 495% YoY increase in net profit to Rs 482 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4). Net profit has jumped 161% when compared to the previous quarter. Its revenue from operations rose 44% YoY to Rs 3,217 crore during the same period. Bosch’s Mobility Solutions Business segment grew 56.6% in Q4. For the financial year ended March 31, 2021 (FY21), net profit has declined by 26% YoY to Rs 480.7 crore. The company’s board has recommended a dividend of Rs 115 per share.

Cipla launches RT-PCR test kit ‘ViraGen’ in India

Cipla Limited announced the launch of ‘ViraGen’— a polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test for Covid-19 in India. The pharma company will launch the test kit in partnership with Ubio Biotechnology Systems. It will commence the supply of ViraGen from May 25, 2021. This will be Cipla’s third offering in the Covid-19 testing segment.

HPCL Q4 Results: Net profit rises 28% QoQ to Rs 3,018 crore

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) reported a 28% quarter-on-quarter (or 400% YoY) increase in net profit to Rs 3017.96 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4). Its total income stood at Rs 85,748 crore in Q4 FY21, compared with Rs 71,978.62 crore in Q4 FY20. The average gross revenue margin (GRM) stood at $3.86 per barrel, compared to $1.02 per barrel in Q4 FY20. HPCL’s board has recommended a final dividend of Rs 22.75 per share.

Unichem Labs receives approval from USFDA for generic antidepressant drug

Unichem Laboratories has received approval for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Amitriptyline HCl tablets from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA). The drug is indicated for the relief of symptoms of depression. It is a generic version of ‘ELAVIL’ of AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. The product will be manufactured and distributed from Unichem Lab’s plant in Goa.

Havells India Q4 Results: Net profit rises 71% YoY to Rs 304 crore

Havells India reported a 70.95% YoY increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 303.83 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4). Net profit has declined by 13.2% when compared to the previous quarter. Its revenue from operations rose 50.59% YoY to Rs 3,339.21 crore during the same period. The company’s cable segment grew 50.85% YoY to Rs 1,029.20 crore, while revenue from the lighting and fixtures segment rose 43% YoY to Rs 336.74 crore. The board of Havells India has announced a total dividend of Rs 6.50 per share.

SEBI fines Biocon, senior executive for violating market norms

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has imposed a total penalty of Rs 14 lakh on Biocon Limited and one of its senior executives for violation of market norms. Narendra Chirmule, senior Vice President of Research & Development (R&D), had traded in the company’s shares when the trading window was closed. Biocon failed to notify the particulars of the executives’ trading details to SEBI within the stipulated time. The company is facing a penalty of Rs 9 lakh for violating various provisions of Prohibition of Insider Trading (PIT) norms.

Steel Strips Wheels Ltd (SSWL) has received export orders of more than 97,000 wheels from the trailer and caravan markets of the US and European Union (EU). The orders will be executed by early July 2021 from its plants in Chennai and Dappar (Punjab). Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 275.8 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4 FY21). It had posted a net loss of Rs 766.70 crore in the corresponding period last year (Q4 FY20). ZEEL’s revenue from operations grew 0.8% YoY to Rs 1,965.8 crore in Q4 FY21. The company’s advertising revenue grew 8.09% YoY to Rs 1,122.96 crore during the same period. ZEEL’s board has recommended a dividend of Rs 2.5 per share.

Torrent Power reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 398.10 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4 FY21). It had posted a net loss of Rs 273.94 in the corresponding quarter a year ago (Q4 FY20). Its total income rose 3.17% YoY to Rs 3116.54 crore in Q4 FY21. For the financial year ended March 31, 2021 (FY21), net profit has increased by 10% YoY to Rs 1,295.87 crore. JK Lakshmi Cement reported a 54.22% YoY (or 34% QoQ) rise in net profit to Rs 152.91 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4). Its total income rose 25% YoY to Rs 1,451.72 crore during the same period. For the financial year ended March 31, 2021 (FY21), net profit increased by 63.5% YoY to Rs 405.38 crore. The company’s board has recomennded a final dividend of Rs 3.75 per share.

Mindtree to acquire L&T’s NxT Digital for Rs 198 cr

Mindtree Ltd has signed an agreement to acquire NxT Digital Business from Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Group for Rs 198 crore. This acquisition would enable Mindtree to capture opportunities in the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 market by leveraging the capabilities of NxT Digital Business to cross-sell and create holistic solutions for new prospects as well as for existing clients. The transaction is expected to be completed by July 31, 2021.

ICICI Bank Q3 Results: Net profit rises 19% YoY to Rs 4,940 crore

ICICI Bank Ltd reported a 19% YoY increase in net profit to Rs 4,939.6 crore for the quarter ended December (Q3). Net interest income (NII) rose 16% YoY to Rs 9,912 crore during the same period. [NII is the difference between the interest income a bank earns from its lending activities and the interest it pays to depositors] The bank’s gross non-performing asset (NPA) ratio stood at 3.38%, compared with 5.17% in Q2 FY21. L&T Finance Holdings to open rights issue on Feb 1

L&T Finance Holdings announced that its Rs 2,998.61 crore rights issue will open on February 1, 2021. [A rights issue is an invitation to existing shareholders to purchase additional new shares in the company] The company will issue up to 46.13 crore equity shares for cash, at Rs 65 per equity share (including a premium of Rs 55 per share). The funds raised through the issue will be used to repay certain commercial papers issued by the company and for infusing funds into its subsidiary.

Shree Cement Ltd reported a 102% YoY increase in net profit to Rs 626.2 crore for the quarter ended December (Q3). Its revenue rose 16.2% YoY to Rs 3,309.4 crore during the same period. The company has benefited from the pick-up in sales volumes and a strong pricing environment.

Happiest Minds acquires US-based Pimcore Global Services

Happiest Minds Technologies Ltd said it will acquire US-based Pimcore Global Services (PGS) for $8.25 million (~Rs 60 crore). PGS is a digital e-commerce and data management solutions company. Happiest Minds stated that the acquisition will further strengthen its offerings and leadership in the digital transformation space. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the quarter ended March 31, 2021 (Q4).

SAIL Q3 Results: Net profit at Rs 1,468 crore

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) reported a net profit of Rs 1,468.20 crore for the quarter ended December (Q3). It had posted a net loss of Rs 343.57 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The company’s revenue rose 20% YoY to Rs 19,835 crore during the same period. Total sales including domestic and exports grew 1% YoY to 4.15 million tonnes. SAIL has declared an interim dividend of Rs 1 per share.

Power Grid secures two power transmission projects in Rajasthan

Power Grid Corporation of India has been declared as the successful bidder under tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) to establish two power transmission projects in Rajasthan. The projects include the establishment of a new 400/220kV Substation, 400kV D/C transmission lines, and associated Substation extension works in Rajasthan.

NSE adds 5 stocks in F&O segment from March series

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has announced the inclusion of five securities in the futures and options (F&O) segment from the March series. Alkem Laboratories, AU Small Finance Bank, Deepak Nitrite, Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), and Nippon Life India Asset Management will come under the F&O segment, effective from February 26. These securities have been added to the F&O segment based on the stock selection criteria prescribed by market regulator SEBI.

Relaxo Footwears Ltd reported a 67% YoY increase in net profit to Rs 90 crore for the quarter ended December (Q3). Its revenue rose 12% YoY to Rs 672 crore during the same period. Total expense during the quarter increased by 4.7% YoY to Rs 555.10 crore. Relaxo Footwears is engaged in the production of Hawaii slippers, lightweight slippers, canvas shoes, PVC footwear, etc.
