ONGC to invest $7 billion to boost output

Oil & Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) will invest $7 billion (~Rs 57,500 crore) over the next 3-4 years to reverse the decline in oil and gas production. The majority of ONGC’s fields are old and have experienced a natural decline, but the company is heavily investing in technology to raise recovery and tap isolated reservoirs. Up to 24 field development, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), and improved oil recovery (IOR) projects are currently in progress that will help to reverse the declining trend in oil and gas production.

WagonR, Alto K10 score low safety rating in Global NCAP crash test

Maruti Suzuki’s popular models, WagonR and Alto K10, have received one- and two-star safety ratings for adult occupant protection, respectively, from vehicle safety group Global NCAP after conducting crash tests. Both models scored zero stars for child occupant protection. The automaker claimed that its vehicles meet India’s crash safety regulations, which are almost similar to the standards in Europe and are duly tested and certified by the Indian govt.

HDFC Bank records loan growth of 17% at end of March

HDFC Bank reported a 16.9% increase in credit growth at Rs 16 lakh crore at the end of the March quarter. The bank’s outstanding credit was Rs 13.6 lakh crore at the end of March 31, 2022. The bank’s deposits grew around 20.8% YoY to Rs 18.83 lakh crore as of March 31, 2023. Domestic retail loans grew by around 21%, while commercial and rural banking loans grew 30% YoY.

Vedanta produces record aluminium, high refined metal in FY23

Vedanta Ltd’s aluminium production reached its highest-ever level of 22.91 lakh tonnes in 2022-23, up slightly from 22.68 lakh tonnes in FY22. Meanwhile, its high refined metal production increased by 7% to 10.32 lakh tonnes in FY23. The company also recorded a 22% YoY increase in zinc production from its international business to 2.73 lakh tonnes.

Adani Group JV in talks for first offshore loan since Hindenburg

An Adani Group joint venture (JV) with EdgeConneX is in talks with several banks for a loan of about $220 million. This would be the group’s first offshore borrowing since it was targeted by short-seller Hindenburg Research. The loan would be used by data center provider AdaniConneX Private Ltd. for capital expenditure. The loan may be signed in the coming weeks.

Bank of Baroda stops clearing payment for above-cap Russian oil: Report

As per an Economic Times report, Bank of Baroda has stopped clearing payments for Russian oil sold above the $60 per barrel price cap set by the West, which could accelerate the shift to a rupee trade mechanism. Some Indian refiners have been paying in United Arab Emirates dirham currency for Russian low-sulphur crude priced above the $60 a barrel cap using Bank of Baroda.

India’s GDP growth to slow down to 6.3 % in FY24: World Bank

The World Bank has revised its forecast for India’s GDP growth in FY24 to 6.3 %, down from its earlier forecast of 6.6 % in December 2022. The slower consumption growth and challenging external conditions are expected to constrain India’s GDP growth. The Indian government’s consumption is also projected to grow slower due to the withdrawal of pandemic-related fiscal support measures. 

The World Bank’s latest India Development Update notes that the Indian economy continues to show strong resilience to external shocks.

India cuts windfall tax on crude production to nil

The Indian govt has cut all windfall tax on crude oil from 3,500 rupees ($42.56) per tonne effective from Tuesday. The windfall tax on diesel was cut to Rs 0.50 per litre from Rs 1 previously. As of April 4, only diesel carries a windfall tax while crude. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) and petrol will not attract any such levies.

India cuts windfall tax on crude, aviation fuel

The Central govt cut the windfall profit tax on domestically produced crude oil and also reduced the levy on aviation turbine fuel exports. The revised tax rates become effective from December 16, 2022. The tax on crude oil produced by local firms has been reduced from the existing ₹4,900 per tonne to ₹1,700 per tonne. The windfall tax on aviation turbine fuel has been reduced from ₹5 per litre from to ₹1.5 per litre.

TVS Motor launches RR 310 and RTR 200 at Expo Moto in Mexico

TVS Motor Company on Friday announced the launch of the RR 310 and RTR 200 4V motorcycles at the Expo Moto in Mexico. The company claims these motorcycles are designed for racing enthusiasts. They are equipped with features such as Throttle-by-Wire technology, a 5-inch Vertical TFT Multi-Information Race Computer with Control Cubes, Bluetooth-enabled SmartXonnect, and four ride modes.

India’s textile industry faces tough times as consumers cut spending

According to an Economic Times report, India’s textile and apparel industry is facing a crisis as consumers in the United States, Europe, and other markets have cut spending on clothing following a surge in inflation. Exports (which constitute ~22% of the industry) have fallen for five months in a row— declining over 15% YoY to $3.1 billion in November. Domestic sales have declined due to high costs and cheap imported garments.

Deepak Fertilisers & Petrochemicals Corp Ltd (DFPCL) announced the demerger of its mining chemicals and fertilisers businesses. The board of Smartchem Technologies (STL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of DFPCL, approved a corporate restructuring plan that will help unlock the growth potential of each of the businesses. The move will help create strong independent business platforms within the larger DFPCL brand umbrella.

IndiGo seeks DGCA approval for wet leasing Boeing 777 aircraft

InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) has sought approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)  to wet lease Boeing 777 aircraft, which will be used for operating flights on the Delhi-Istanbul route. This will be the first time the airline will be inducting wide-body planes into its fleet. The move also comes against the backdrop of global supply chain issues impacting aircraft deliveries.

Phoenix Mills completes acquisition of 7-acre land parcel in Surat

Phoenix Mills has completed the acquisition of a 7.2-acre city-centric land parcel in Surat, Gujarat, to develop a premium retail destination with a gross leasable area of 1 million square feet. The company has paid around ₹510 crores to acquire the plot through its indirect subsidiary (Thoth Mall & Commercial Real Estate). It expects to complete the development by FY2026-27.

IDBI Bank object to ZEEL-Sony merger

IDBI Bank Ltd. has informed the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) of its intention to file objections against the merger of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (ZEEL) with Culver Max Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. (previously known as Sony Pictures Network India). On Wed, ZEEL disclosed that an application has been filed by IDBI Bank in the insolvency court claiming to be one of the creditors of the company. The application has been filed for the resolution of a claim of ~₹150 crore.

India all set to become $5 trillion economy by FY25: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said India is the fastest-growing major economy in the world and is all set to achieve a $5 trillion gross domestic product (GDP) by 2024-25. He said the central government is aiming to boost growth and employment to achieve sustainable development. The minister also added that India’s automobile industry is worth ₹7.5 lakh crore and wants to take it to ₹15 lakh crore.

HDFC Bank allots 7.84% bonds on a private placement basis

HDFC Bank has issued and allotted 7.84%, unsecured, fully paid-up, non-convertible bonds on a private placement basis. The issue proceeds will be used for strengthening its capital adequacy and enhancing its long-term resources amounting to ₹5,000 crore. [The capital adequacy ratio (CAR) is a measurement of a bank’s available capital expressed as a percentage of its risk-weighted credit exposures (loans).]

Adani Group gets SEBI nod for open offer to buy stake in ACC and Ambuja

The Adani Group has made offers of Rs 385 per share for Ambuja Cements and Rs 2,300 a share for ACC. The company intends to buy a 26% stake in both cement companies respectively for an amount totalling ~Rs 31,160 crores. Adani will acquire the stake from Holcim Ltd after it announced to buy a controlling stake in Holcim’s India businesses.

IRCTC shares surge ~12% in two days after floating data monetisation tender

Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation’s shares surged by nearly ~12% in the last two trading sessions after it floated a tender to hire a consultant to help it monetize its digital assets. The tender drew controversy as users questioned if IRCTC intended to sell private user data.

In response, IRCTC clarified as follows: “As a commercial entity, the company explores the business opportunities for new areas. As other business tenders, this tender has also been floated merely to appoint a consultant. The consultant will guide IRCTC and Indian Railways on monetization activities and advise on monetization value of Digital Assets by observing various Acts or laws, including IT Act 2000 and its amendments, User data privacy laws including GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), and current Personal Data Protection Bill 2018 of India.”

India’s inflation target breach for first time in six years

India’s inflation has breached the upper tolerance limit of 6% for three consecutive quarters for the first time in six years. The RBI has decided to call a meeting after October 12 to discuss a report to be submitted to the Union Government explaining the breach. The limit of the inflation target is fixed every five years jointly by the RBI and the Union Government. Currently, the upper limit is fixed at 6%, while the lower limit is at 2% until March 31, 2026.

Syrma SGS Technologies’ Rs 840 crore IPO got subscribed 32.61 times, whereas its retail portion was subscribed 5.53 times. The company’s shares are trading at a premium of 28% in the grey market, standing at Rs 35 per share. The tentative date for allotment of shares is August 23, 2022.

BSE’s market cap hits a new peak of Rs 283.5 lakh crore

Bombay Stock Exchange’s market cap has hit a new peak of Rs 283.5 lakh crore, with the SENSEX ending at 60,289 points at the day’s end. In January, the exchange had hit its last peak with a market cap of Rs 283.2 lakh crore. The rally in the previous two months is due to the net buying of Indian stocks by foreign portfolio investors

Government reviews windfall profit tax, RIL shares dip

On Thursday, the government increased the windfall profit tax on diesel exports to Rs. 7 per litre and reinstated a tax on jet fuel exports, although it decreased the tax on locally produced crude oil in line with softening rates. The tariff on domestic crude oil has been reduced from Rs 17,750 to Rs 13,000 per tonne.

Zomato-owned quick delivery app Blinkit has started services to deliver printouts to your doorstep in just 10 minutes. Currently, the service is available in select areas of Delhi-NCR. It will charge an amount of ₹9 per page for black and white printouts, while ₹19 for colored. The service will now help users to get their documents printed and delivered quickly to their location by just uploading them on the Blinkit application

SBI shares dip after it sells KSK Mahanadi Power loan account to Aditya Birla ARC for Rs 1,622 crore

Aditya Birla ARC has purchased the KSK Mahanadi Power Company’s non-performing loan account from SBI for Rs 1,622 crore, taking an almost 58% haircut off the total outstanding balance in the process. As of April 2022, the total amount of loans still owed to the State Bank of India (SBI) by KSK Mahanadi Power Company was Rs 3,815.04 crore.
