L&T secures third order for Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a third order for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL). The order includes the design and construction of civil & building works for a double-line high-speed railway of a length of 8.198 km. It also includes the construction of the major station of Vadodara and other key civil structures.

Axis Bank issues first Letter of Credit on dedicated govt-backed platform

Axis Bank issued the banking industry’s first Letter of Credit (LC) on the Secured Logistics Document Exchange (SLDE), a government-backed blockchain-enabled platform. The deal involved ArcelorMittal Nippon and the bank’s client Lalit Pipes & Pipes Ltd (LPPL). Axis Bank released an LC on behalf of LPPL, which required such a non-fund-based credit line for a business transaction with ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India.

Adani Power, Gujarat discom settle dispute

Adani Power Ltd (APL) and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) have reached an out-of-court settlement on a dispute pertaining to the termination of a power purchase agreement. APL has agreed to forego a compensation claim worth Rs 11,000 crore against the electricity distribution company (discom). The two companies will now work out a new tariff for the generation and supply of the 1,000-MW electricity based on domestic coal.

Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd has received tentative approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) for Dronedarone Tablets. The drug is indicated to reduce the risk of hospitalization for atrial fibrillation in patients in sinus rhythm. According to IQVIA data, Dronedarone tablets had an estimated market size of $500 million (~Rs 3,705 crore) for the twelve months ended September 2021.

RailTel declares interim dividend of Rs 1.75 per share

RailTel Corporation of India has declared an interim dividend of Rs 1.75 per share for the financial year 2021-22. The company has fixed January 21 as the record date for the payment of the interim dividend. The total payout of the dividend is approximately Rs 56 crore. RailTel is one of the largest telecom infrastructure providers in the country, with a pan-India optic fibre network covering several towns, cities, and rural areas.

JBM Auto acquires 51% stake in JBM Green Energy Systems

JBM Auto Ltd has acquired the majority stake (51%) in JBM Green Energy Systems Pvt Ltd (JBM GESPL) and JBM EV Industries Pvt Ltd (JBM EIPL) through a subsidiary, JBM Electric Vehicles Private Ltd. JBM GESPL and JBM EIPL have now become indirect subsidiary companies of JBM Auto. The company has announced plans to commission an end-to-end e-mobility ecosystem completely localised in India.

SJVN gets category ‘I’ licence for inter-state trading of electricity across India

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has given category ‘I’ licence to SJVN Ltd for inter-state power trading across India. According to the CERC order, no objections were received on the petition of SJVN for grant of a category ‘I’ licence for inter-state trading in electricity. State-owned SJVN Ltd is engaged in hydroelectric power generation and transmission.

JSW Steel Ltd has announced a 15,000-crore brownfield expansion project at its Vijaynagar Steel Works to increase capacity by 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 18 MTPA by FY24. The company has received environmental clearance for the project. It is planning to complete a 1 MTPA expansion through the upgradation of the current facility to achieve 13 MTPA capacity within the next 12 months.

Tata Power has secured the highest score among its peers in the Indian power sector in S&P Global’s recently released corporate sustainability assessment (CSA) results. The company scored 67 out of 100, which is significantly higher than the average world electric utility sector (comprising both Indian and global electric utilities) score of 38. Lupin Ltd has launched antiviral medication Molnupiravir under the brand name Molnulup in India for Covid-19 treatment. The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has given emergency use authorisation (EUA) for Molnupiravir for the treatment of adult Covid-19 patients who have a high risk of progression of the disease. Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has executed an agreement to acquire a 40% stake in Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy from Shapoorji Pallonji and Company. Reliance New Energy Solar Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of RIL, acquired 1.84 crore shares of Sterling & Wilson Renewable for Rs 690 crore in an off-market deal.

TCS wins second phase of Centre’s Passport Seva Program

The Ministry of External Affairs has selected Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to implement the second phase of the Passport Seva Program, India’s largest mission-critical e-governance program till date. TCS will be managing the project for another 9.5 years. The IT major will refresh existing systems and develop new solutions to enable the issuance of e-passports using technologies such as biometrics, artificial intelligence, and advanced data analytics. Analysts estimate the deal to be valued at about Rs 6,000-8,000 crore.

G.M. Breweries Q3 Results: Net profit rises 6.25% YoY to Rs 19.8 crore

G.M. Breweries Ltd (GMBL) reported a 6.25% YoY increase in net profit to Rs 19.79 crore for the quarter ended December 2021 (Q3 FY22). Its revenue from operations rose 16.9% YoY to Rs 130.88 crore during the same period. EBITDA fell 2.9% YoY to Rs 27.8 crore. Maharashtra-based GMBL is engaged in the manufacturing and marketing of alcoholic beverages.

RIL raises $4 billion in India’s largest forex bond deal

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has raised $4 billion (~Rs 29,780 crore) in US dollar bonds, marking India’s largest-ever foreign currency bond deal. RIL raised $1.5 billion in a 10-year tranche, $1.75 billion in a 30-year, and $750 million in a 40-year deal. The company plans to use the proceeds from the issue to refinance its existing borrowings. The issue was oversubscribed nearly three times, with a peak order book aggregating $11.5 billion.

L&T Construction secures large contracts under water and effluent treatment segment

The Water & Effluent Treatment Business of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Construction has secured large orders (in the range of Rs 2,500-5,000 crore). The Department of Water Supply and Sanitation, Punjab, has awarded two EPC orders for the bulk supply of treated water to 10 lakh people across 412 villages in Fazilka and Ferozepur districts. The Odisha government has given a repeat EPC order to execute the Under Ground Pipeline Irrigation System for the Rengali Right Irrigation Project (Phase-I).

Reliance Retail acquires 25.8% stake in Dunzo for $200 million

Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd (RRVL) has invested $200 million (~Rs 1,488 crore) in Bengaluru-based Dunzo as it looks to get a foothold in the country’s rapidly growing market of quick delivery. RRVL will hold a 25.8% stake in Dunzo on a fully diluted basis. Dunzo will enable hyperlocal logistics for the retail stores operated by RRVL to boost its omnichannel capabilities.

ADF Foods Industries Ltd has received approval from the Central Government under Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for food processing industries– incentive for branding and marketing expenditure abroad. The company would be an extended financial incentive at 50% of budgeted outlay on international branding and marketing expenditure or 3% of sales of food products (whichever is lower), subject to a maximum incentive of Rs 61.35 crore from FY22 to FY26.

HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd announced the closure of the acquisition of Exide Life. The company acquired a 100% stake in Exide Life from Exide Industries Ltd after issuing over 8.7 crore shares at Rs 685 per share and a cash payout of Rs 726 crore, aggregating to Rs 6,687 crore. HDFC Life will soon initiate the merger of Exide Life with itself. Exide Industries now holds a 4.1% stake in HDFC Life.

SJVN power stations register 1,480 MU of electricity generation in October-December

SJVN Ltd’s power stations have clocked the highest ever 1,480 million units (MU) of electricity generation in the October-December quarter of 2021-22 (Q3 FY22). The state-run company has surpassed the previous record of 1,343 MU in the corresponding period of FY20, from all its power stations. SJVN is aiming to achieve an installed capacity of 5,000 megawatts (MW) by 2023.

IDFC First Bank records 10% YoY growth in total customer deposits in Q3

IDFC First Bank reported a 10.48% YoY growth in total customer deposits to Rs 85,387 crore for the quarter ended December (Q3 FY22). The Current Account-Savings Account (CASA) ratio was 51.85% in Q3 FY22, compared to 48.31% in Q3 FY21. The bank’s housing loans book grew by 44.2% YoY. Gross funded assets aggregated to Rs 1,22,289 crore as of December 31, 2021, up 10.70% YoY.

Axis Bank concludes structured derivative deals as RBI ban lifts

 Axis Bank has started offering structured derivative products to leading companies after a ban on these deals was lifted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) effective Monday. The first of these transactions were executed with Reliance Industries Ltd, which involved the use of Barrier FX options for their currency risk management. The bank also concluded another transaction with Supreme Petrochem Ltd.

A structured product (also known as a market-linked investment) is a pre-packaged structured finance investment strategy based on securities, options, indices, derivatives, etc.

Delhi HC dismisses Future Group’s plea for termination of Amazon arbitration

The Delhi High Court has dismissed the pleas moved by Future Group companies seeking a direction to the arbitration tribunal, which is adjudicating Amazon’s objections against their deal with Reliance, to decide on their application for the termination of the arbitration proceedings before moving any further. 

Amazon and Future have been locked in a bitter legal tussle after the US-based e-commerce giant dragged Future Group to arbitration at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) in October 2020. Amazon argued that Future Retail Ltd (FRL) had violated their contract by entering into a deal for the sale of its assets to Reliance Retail for Rs 24,500 crore.

Passenger vehicle sales fall 19% in November: SIAM

Passenger vehicle wholesales in India fell 19% in November as the semiconductor shortage continued to impact vehicle production. Total passenger vehicle (PV) dispatches last month stood at 2,15,626 units, a decline of 19% from 2,64,898 units in November 2020. Two-wheeler sales fell sharply by 34% YoY to 10,50,616 units. Three-wheeler dispatches stood at 22,471 units, down 7% YoY. The data was released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Factory output grows 3.2% in October

India’s factory output, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), grew 3.2% in October 2021, led by growth in primary goods. The growth comes on the back of a 4.5% rise witnessed in the same period last year as the economy was recovering from the first round of lockdown-induced contraction. The manufacturing sector’s output grew 2% in October, while mining output surged by 11.4%. Power generation went up by 3.1%.

LIC gets RBI approval to increase stake in IndusInd Bank to 9.99%

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to raise its stake in IndusInd Bank to 9.99%. LIC currently holds 4.95% of the total issued and paid-up capital of the private sector lender. The approval is valid up to December 8, 2022. The RBI norms mandate that an entity that intends to acquire more than a 5% stake in a private bank has to take prior approval from the central bank.

RIL raises stake in HFCL to 5% via QIP

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has increased its stake in HFCL to 5% by investing in its qualified institutional placement (QIP). HFCL is India’s largest integrated telecom network provider. In an exchange filing, HFCL said its board had approved the allotment of 8.73 crore equity shares at Rs 68.75 per share to qualified institutional buyers (QIBs). The company has raised Rs 600 crore through the QIP issue.

RBI Retains Growth Forecast for FY22 at 9.5% – Top Indian Market News

RBI retains GDP growth target at 9.5% in FY22

The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has left the Repo Rate unchanged at 4%. The Reverse Repo Rate also remains unchanged at 3.35%. The RBI’s projection of real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth for FY22 has been retained at 9.5%. The GDP growth forecast stands at 6.6% for Q3 and 6% for Q4. The MPC expects inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to be at 5.1% in Q3 and 5.7% in Q4.

RBI’s overarching policy focus and priority will be on supporting growth amidst the threat of a third wave of Covid-19.

Jio-BP has signed an agreement with Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) Ltd to develop electric vehicle (EV) related products and services, including EV charging solutions. HCL Technologies Ltd has partnered with Deutsche Apotheker- und Ärztebank eG (apoBank) to acquire IT consulting company Gesellschaft für Banksysteme GmbH (gbs).  HCL Tech will hold a 51% stake, while apoBank will own a 49% stake of gbs. This strategic acquisition will add an edge to HCL’s existing capabilities to accelerate digital transformation and further enhance its scale in Germany. The transaction is expected to close in January 2022.

NCLAT stays Rs 200 crore penalty imposed by CCI on Maruti Suzuki

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has stayed the Rs 200 crore penalty imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. However, NCLAT directed the automaker to deposit 10% of the total penalty amount with the NCLAT’s Registrar within three weeks. It will take up the appeal filed by Maruti Suzuki for admission on December 15.

On August 23, 2021, CCI had imposed a penalty of Rs 200 crore on MSIL for allegedly restraining competition with its policy of controlling the discounts that dealers could offer customers.

KIOCL Ltd has entered into an agreement with Tauman Engineering Ltd for setting up a heat recovery coke oven plant at a contract price of Rs 185 crore. The plant will have a production capacity of 1,80,000 tonnes per annum (TPA). The company has signed a tripartite agreement with Tauman Engineering and CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research for providing the technology and know-how.

Future Retail employees urge Supreme Court to clear asset sale in Amazon dispute

The Future Retail Employee Welfare Association has filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court (SC), seeking to intervene in the current proceedings of the company’s dispute with Amazon over its 2019 deal with Reliance. The association has stated that the interests of nearly 27,000 employees of Future Retail have been affected by the orders passed in arbitral proceedings. Amazon is trying to block the sale of Future Group’s retail, wholesale, and logistics business to Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) for Rs 24,713 crore for allegedly breaking contracts.

In other news, the SC has deferred the hearing in the legal tussle between Amazon and Future Group to December 8. This is on account of the inconvenience caused by the bulky documents placed on record by the parties.

Bharti Airtel Ltd’s subsidiary Nxtra launched its new 38 megawatts (MW) hyperscale data centre park in Chennai on Tuesday. The centre is fully integrated with Airtel’s global submarine cable network, providing an end-to-end secure connectivity solution to hyperscalers. Nxtra claims to operate the largest network of data centres in India. It aims to invest Rs 5,000 crore by 2025 to increase its data centre capacity three times to over 400 MW.

Greaves Cotton Ltd’s e-mobility arm, Greaves Electric Mobility, announced the opening of its largest EV production facility at Ranipet in Tamil Nadu. Spread across 35 acres, the plant is located in the industrial centre of Tamil Nadu. It will serve as an e-mobility hub for both domestic and export markets. The manufacturing facility with additional assembly lines will produce up to 10 lakh vehicles a year.

SpiceJet brings back Boeing 737 Max; customers to enjoy free onflight WiFi

SpiceJet Ltd has brought back Boeing 737 MAX aircraft into operation after a gap of around two-and-a-half years. Earlier this month, the airline had entered into an agreement with Boeing to settle outstanding claims related to the grounding of 737 Max aircraft and its return to service. SpiceJet has started flying two Boeing 737 Max planes in India, and 11 more such aircraft will start flying in India in the next 15-20 days. The domestic carrier will also offer free onboard WiFi on the Boeing 737 Max.

Reliance Jio Infocomm has retained its top position with the highest average data download speed of 21.9 megabits per second (Mbps) among 4G service providers in October. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea’s (Vi) networks have been continuously recording an increase in data download speed, thereby reducing the gap with the Jio network. Airtel 4G data download speed increased to 13.2 Mbps in October from 5 Mbps in June. Vi’s 4G speed increased to 15.6 Mbps from 6.5 Mbps in June.

Oil India Q2 Results: Net profit jumps 111% YoY to Rs 504.46 crore

Oil India Limited (OIL) reported a 111% YoY jump in net profit to Rs 504.46 crore for the quarter ended September (Q2 FY22). Its turnover rose 52.8% YoY to Rs 3,311.18 crore during the same period. EBITDA stood at Rs 1,290.99 crore in Q2, an increase of 50.9% YoY. Crude oil price realisation for Q2 FY22 rose to $71.35 per barrel, compared to $42.74 per barrel in the corresponding period last year. OIL’s board has recommended an interim dividend of Rs 3.5 per share.

Bank of Baroda Q2 Results: Net profit rises 24% YoY to Rs 2,088 crore

Bank of Baroda reported a 24.4% YoY increase in net profit to Rs 2,087.9 crore for the quarter ended September (Q2 FY22). Its net interest income (NII) rose 2.11% YoY to Rs 7,566 crore during the same period. The gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio stood at 8.11% in Q2, compared to 8.9% in the previous quarter. The bank’s provisions fell 2% YoY to Rs 2,754 crore.

Cabinet approves ethanol price hike by up to Rs 1.4 per litre for blending in petrol

The Union Cabinet has hiked the price of ethanol extracted from sugarcane for blending in petrol by up to Rs 1.47 per litre for the 2021-22 marketing year, starting December. It is part of the government’s target to achieve 20% doping by 2025. Higher mixing of ethanol in petrol will help India cut its oil import bill and also benefit sugar cane farmers and sugar mills.

Tata Motors reports 24% rise in group global wholesales in Q2

Tata Motors Ltd reported a 24% YoY increase in group global wholesales (including Jaguar Land Rover) to 2,51,689 units in Q2 FY22. Global wholesales of all Tata Motors’ commercial vehicles and Tata Daewoo range during the quarter stood at 89,055 units, up 57% YoY. The global wholesales of all passenger vehicles in Q2 rose 11% YoY to 1,62,634 units. JLR’s global sales stood at 78,251 units during the same period.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has launched the Tiotropium Bromide dry powder inhaler (DPI) under the brand name Tavulus in Spain. The drug is used for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is a long-term condition that causes inflammation in the lungs, damaging the lung tissue and narrowing the airways, all of which make breathing difficult. Zydus Cadila gets USFDA approval for diabetes medication

Zydus Cadila has received approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) to market Sitagliptin, a drug indicated to treat diabetes. On October 31, 2020, the pharma company had filed a new drug application (NDA) with the USFDA seeking approval to market Sitagliptin base 25, 50, and 100 mg tablets. The NDA received tentative approval upon completion of the first review cycle on September 2, 2021.

Tamilnad Merchantile Bank files DRHP for IPO

Tamilnad Merchantile Bank has filed a Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with market regulator SEBI to raise funds via an initial public offering (IPO). The IPO comprises a fresh issue of up to 1.58 crore shares and an offer for sale (OFS) of up to 12,505 shares by existing shareholders. Tuticorin-based Tamilnad Mercantile Bank is a professionally managed lender and does not have an identifiable promoter. The 100-year-old company was established as a lender for the Nadar community in Tamil Nadu.

Alembic Pharma’s JV gets USFDA approval for Metronidazole gel

Aleor Dermaceuticals, a joint venture (JV) of Alembic Pharma, has received final approval from the USFDA for Metronidazole gel. The gel is indicated for the topical treatment of inflammatory lesions of rosacea (a condition that causes redness and often small, red, pus-filled bumps on the face). According to IQVIA, Metronidazole gel USP had annual sales of $29 million (~Rs 211 crore) for the twelve months ended June 2021.

NMDC targets iron ore output of 44 MT in FY22; draws up capex of Rs 3,750 crore

NMDC Limited is planning a capital expenditure (capex) of Rs 3,750 crore and targeting an iron ore output of 44 million tonnes (MT) in the current financial year (FY22). The company had achieved an iron ore output of 35 MT during the Covid-hit FY21. NMDC has registered strong volume growth and revenue growth during the first five months of FY22 and expects to sustain the growth momentum.

State-owned NMDC has also reduced the prices of lump ore and fine ore by Rs 1,000 per tonne.

GAIL Q1 Results: Net profit falls 19% QoQ to Rs 1,530 crore

GAIL (India) Ltd reported a 19.8% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) decline in net profit to Rs 1529.9 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY22). Net profit has jumped ~500% when compared to the corresponding period last year. Its revenue from operations rose 11.8% QoQ to Rs 17,383.9 crore in Q1. GAIL’s natural gas marketing and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) gas volumes rose 19.2% QoQ and 17.3% QoQ, respectively in the April-June quarter of FY22.

Adani Transmission Q1 Results: Net profit rises 22% YoY to Rs 433 crore

Adani Transmission Ltd reported a 21.9% YoY increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 433.24 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY22). Alembic Pharma gets USFDA approval for OCD treatment drug

Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd has received final approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) for Clomipramine Hydrochloride capsules. The drug is used to treat obsessions and compulsions in patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Tata Chemicals Q1 Results: Net profit surges to Rs 342 crore

Tata Chemicals Ltd reported a multi-fold jump in consolidated net profit to Rs 342 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY22). It had posted a net profit of Rs 74.15 crore in the corresponding quarter last year (Q1 FY21). Its revenue from operations rose 27% YoY to Rs 2,977 crore in Q1 FY22. The strong performance in Q1 was aided by a rebound in soda ash volumes in the US and India. Revenue from its Basic Chemistry segment grew 30% YoY to Rs 2,173 crore during the same period.

Reliance BP Mobility partners with Swiggy to build EV ecosystem

Food delivery platform Swiggy has partnered with Reliance BP Mobility Ltd (RBML) to build an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in India. The partnership is aimed at promoting the adoption of battery-powered EVs, including the deployment of electric two-wheelers for food delivery. It will be supported by Jio-BP’s network of battery swap stations and Swiggy’s network of delivery partners. RBML is a joint venture of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and UK-based energy major BP plc.

Panacea Biotec has entered into a licensing and manufacturing agreement with Russia-based Human Vaccine Limited Liability Company, Generium Joint Stock Company, and Dr. Reddy’s Labs to produce up to 25 million doses of Sputnik V vaccine. The pharma company will produce the Covid-19 vaccine using the ready-to-fill substance manufactured by Generium and then supply the entire quantity to Dr. Reddy’s Labs for distribution in India.
