Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) reported a 3.85% YoY rise in net profit to ₹2,717 crore for the quarter ended September 2023 (Q2 FY24). Net profit stood at ₹2,616 crore in Q2 last year. Its revenue from operations rose 3.53% YoY to ₹15,027 crore during the same period. EBITDA stood at ₹3,694 crore, up 9% YoY. The company’s board also declared a dividend of ₹18 per equity share.

NCLT approves Tata Steel Long Products’ amalgamation with Tata Steel

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the amalgamation of Tata Steel Long Products Ltd with Tata Steel Ltd. Tata Steel is to merge Tata Steel Long Products and six other subsidiaries with itself. The subsidiaries to be merged with Tata Steel are Tata Steel Long Products, The Tinplate Company of India, Tata Metaliks, TRF, Indian Steel & Wire Products, Tata Steel Mining and S&T Mining Company.

Jindal Stainless Q2 Results: Net profit rises 75% YoY to ₹609 crore

Jindal Stainless Ltd reported a 74.5% YoY rise in net profit to ₹609.4 crore for the quarter ended September 2023 (Q2 FY24). Its total revenue rose 13.6% YoY to ₹9,720.4 crore during the same period. EBITDA stood at ₹1,069 crore, up 54% YoY. The company’s board has declared a dividend of ₹1 per equity share, with October 28, 2023 as the record date.

Dr Reddy’s Labs gets regulatory approval to study weight loss drug

Dr Reddy’s Laboratoris Ltd has received the Indian drug regulator’s approval to study the safety and efficacy of Semaglutide, a weight loss drug. The pharma company will conduct a bioequivalence study to establish the safety and efficacy of the drug on the Indian population. The company will launch the drug in a year if the bioequivalence studies meet expectations.

The cases are in the early stages of legal discovery and revolve around allegations that a hair-relaxer product contains chemicals that may pose risks of ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, and various other health issues. These cases have been filed in both federal and state courts in the US and Canada.

Nestle India’s board approved a 1:10 stock split for the first time in India. This means each share that an investor holds will be subdivided into 10 shares. Granules India has received approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA_ for Esomeprazole Magnesium capsules. The drug is used to treat heartburn and other symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease. According to the IQVIA data for 12 months ended July 2023, the drug had annual sales of nearly $168 million in the US market.

Reliance in talks for $2 billion loan to fuel expansion

According to a Bloomberg report, Reliance Industries Ltd is in discussions with lenders to secure a foreign-currency loan of up to $2 billion. The company plans to utilise India’s dedicated external commercial borrowing route to obtain the loan. The maturity period of the facility is expected to be between 3-5 years, with the funds intended for capital expenditure and refinancing an existing loan set to mature in September. Notable lenders involved in the talks include Bank of America Corp, Citigroup Inc, and Standard Chartered Plc.

India’s goods trade deficit hits a 5-month high in May

According to government data, India’s trade deficit for May FY23 narrowed to $10.35 billion, compared to $12.20 billion in the same period in FY22. The trade deficit declined 35.41% for April and May combined. However, the merchandise trade deficit widened to $22.1 billion in May from $15.2 billion in the previous month. This is primarily due to a surge in goods imports, which reached a five-month high.

Godrej Properties to buy land for a luxury residential project in Kolkata

Godrej Properties Ltd has acquired a 7.44-acre land parcel in the premium residential locality of New Alipore, Kolkata, from West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. Cochin Shipyard’s subsidiary Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL) has secured an international order from Norway-based Wilson Shipowning AS. The order is for the design and construction of six new-generation diesel-electric 3800 DWT general cargo vessels. The contract includes an option for an additional eight vessels. Wilson Ship Management AS is one of the largest short-sea fleet operators in Europe, with a fleet of around 130 vessels.

Titagarh Wagons-BHEL consortium signs ₹24,000 crore contract with Indian railways

A consortium of Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has secured an order worth ₹24,000 crore from Indian Railways to manufacture and supply 80 Vande Bharat sleeper trains. They are responsible for manufacturing fully assembled trains by 2029 and maintaining them for 35 years. The trains’ final assembly, testing, and commissioning will occur at the Indian Railway facilities in Chennai. Each train will consist of 16 coaches, accommodating over 880 passengers.

Dilip Buildcon has announced the completion of the Chandikhole-Bhadrak Section of National Highway 5 (NH5) in Odisha. The project involved the rehabilitation and upgrade of the highway to a six-lane highway. The subsidiary, DBL Chandikhole Bhadrak Highways Ltd, executed the Rs 1,522 crore project under the hybrid-annuity model as part of the National Highways Development Project Phase V.

Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) has signed an agreement with Genesis, an arm of Vikas Lifecare Ltd (VLF), to set up a meter manufacturing plant at an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore. The unit will be set up through a joint venture company. In the joint venture, IGL and Genesis will have equity participation in the ratio of 51:49. The unit is expected to be operational by April 2024 and will have a production capacity of one million meters per annum initially.

Power Grid Corporation’s Board of Directors has approved investments of nearly Rs 4,071 crore for two transmission projects in India. The board has approved the transmission system for Kurnool Wind Energy Zone/ Solar Energy Zone (AP) at an estimated cost of Rs 3,546.94 crore and the Eastern Region Expansion Scheme at a cost of Rs 524.04 crore. These projects are scheduled to be commissioned by November 2024 and Nov 2025, respectively.

Credit card outstanding rises 29.6% to reach record high level in Jan

The credit card outstanding in January rose 29.6% to an all-time high of Rs 1.87 lakh crore on back of increased digitisation and rising consumer confidence in the post-Covid period. As per the latest data of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the credit card outstanding has recorded a growth of over 20% in the 10 months of the current fiscal. June recorded the highest growth of 30.7%.

Blue Star to take up expansion at Dadra, Sri City manufacturing facilities

Blue Star Ltd will undertake capacity expansion plans at its facilities in Dadra and Sri City. In Jan, the company commenced production at its unit in Sri City in Andhra Pradesh, which was set up at an investment of Rs 350 crore. Jindal Stainless to invest Rs 120 crore to set up two rooftop solar projects

Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) will invest Rs 120 crore to set up rooftop solar capacities at its Jajpur and Hisar facilities. While a project of 21-megawatt peak (MWp) will be set up in Jajpur, another 6 MWp rooftop solar capacity will be installed at the company’s unit in Hisar. Both projects are scheduled to be completed by March 2024.

HAL and L&T sign deal with India defence for 70 HTT-40 trainer aircraft and cadet training ships

The Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for the procurement of 70 HTT-40 trainer aircraft worth over Rs 6,800 crore. It has also entered into agreements with Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) for the acquisition of three Cadet Training Ships worth more than Rs 3,100 crore. These deals come as a big boost to India’s efforts to achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in the defense sector.

Vedanta to buy 6% more stake in Hindustan Zinc for Rs 7,900 crore: Report

Vedanta, which currently owns 64.9% stake in Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), is reportedly planning to acquire an additional 6% stake in the company as and when the government sells its holdings. The Indian govt is planning to sell its 15% stake in HZL by March-end. Sources say Vedanta is looking to raise about $1 billion from three foreign banks to fund the acquisition.

This will give Gautam Adani’s conglomerate control of about 65% of the news broadcaster. The founders will sell a 27.26% stake of their remaining 32.26% shareholding in NDTV to an entity owned by Adani.

Puravankara Ltd and Purva Real Estate Fund have acquired more than 100 acres of land for plotted development in a deal valued around ₹200 crore in Chennai. Puravankara plans to launch three more plotted development projects by March 2023.

NCLT approves merger of Jindal Stainless and Jindal Stainless (Hisar)

Jindal Stainless has received regulatory approval for its merger with Jindal Stainless (Hisar) from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The two companies had been demerged in 2015 as part of a financial and operational restructuring exercise to bring down the cost of borrowing. Jindal Stainless had a debt of over ₹8,500 crore, which prompted the restructuring.

Bharat Highways InvIT files draft papers with SEBI for IPO

Bharat Highways InvIT has filed a draft prospectus with the capital markets regulator SEBI to raise ₹2,000 crore through an initial public offering. Proceeds of the issue will be used to repay certain loans obtained by the project special purpose vehicles (SPV) and for general corporate purposes. As per the draft papers, Bharat Highways InvIT would issue units aggregating up to ₹2,000 crore.

2,613 air incidents reported in India during five years; IndiGo tops the list: Govt

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) said there has been a long list of air incidents reported in the last five years involving domestic airlines and added that 12 of these airline companies are presently operating in India. There were a total of 2,613 air incidents reported due to technical snags in the five years in which IndiGo airlines topped the list. IndiGo reported 215 incidents so far in 2022 and 885 incidents over five years.

Adani Wilmar cuts edible oil prices by Rs 30 per litre

Adani Wilmar Ltd has announced a reduction in cooking oil prices by up to Rs 30 per litre amidst a fall in global prices. The price of Adani Wilmar’s Fortune soyabean oil has been revised from Rs 195 per litre to Rs 165 per litre. The sunflower oil rate has been reduced from Rs 210 per litre to Rs 199 per litre. The move comes after the Indian government had slashed import duties by 5.5% and asked manufacturers to pass it on to consumers.

Bank of Maharashtra Q1 Results: Net profit doubles to Rs 452 crore

Bank of Maharashtra reported a 117% YoY jump in net profit to Rs 451.9 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY23). Total income fell 0.5% YoY to Rs 3,774.32 crore during the same period. The bank’s gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio stood at 3.74% in Q1 FY23, compared to 6.35% in Q1 FY22. Provisions fell 27% YoY to Rs 548.41 crore.

Jio puts in highest EMD at Rs 14,000 crore for 5G spectrum sale

Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bharti Airtel, Adani Data Networks, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have put in earnest money deposits (EMDs) of Rs 14,000 crore, Rs 5,500 crore, Rs 100 crore, and Rs 2,200 crore, respectively. The EMDs are part of applications that the applicants filed to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to participate in the upcoming 5G spectrum sale, starting July 26.

Hindalco Ltd has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Israel-based metal-air battery technology pioneer Phinergy to develop and pilot the production of aluminium (Al) plates for aluminium-air batteries in India. In an aluminium-air battery, energy is released when Al reacts with oxygen in ambient air to produce aluminium hydroxide. Due to its lightweight and high energy density, such a battery becomes ideal for electric vehicles (EVs).

ED conducts raids at Indiabulls Finance Centre in Mumbai

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at Indiabulls Finance Centre in Mumbai.  The search was based on an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) registered by ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) against Indiabulls Housing, promoter Sameer Gehlaut, and other related companies and individuals.

The ED had registered a case against Indiabulls Housing Finance Ltd (IHFL) and its promoters in April 2021. It was based on an FIR filed in Palghar, which stated that IHFL siphoned money and invested it in its own shares for increasing prices.

Bharti Airtel Ltd has joined the SEA-ME-WE-6 undersea cable consortium to scale up its high-speed global network capacity. The 19,200 route kilometres (Rkm) SEA-ME-WE-6 will connect Singapore and France. It will be amongst the largest undersea cable systems globally. Bharti Airtel is participating as a major investor in the SEA-ME-WE-6. The telecom operator is anchoring 20% of the overall investment in the cable system, which will go live in 2025.

Reliance Jio will land the next generation multi-terabit India-Asia-Xpress (IAX) undersea cable system in the Maldives. The system will connect Hulhumale in the Maldives directly with major internet hubs in India and Singapore. IAX is expected to be ready for service by the end of 2023. The project will support the explosive growth in data demand expected from the new initiatives being launched by the Government of Maldives.

Services PMI falls to 3 month low in December

India’s services sector activity fell to a three-month low in December but remained in the expansion zone. The IHS Markit India Services Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 55.5 in December 2021, compared to 58.1 in November. PMI is a month-on-month calculation, and a value above 50 represents an expansion when compared to the previous month. The increase in new orders was centered on the domestic market, while new business from abroad fell further due to Covid-related restrictions.

Coal India’s April-December capex rises 37% YoY to Rs 10,717 crore

Coal India Ltd (CIL) incurred a capital expenditure (capex) of Rs 10,717 crore till December of the current financial year, registering a 37.4% year-on-year (YoY) growth. CIL’s capex spend during the period marks 86.3% of the target achievement. Construction of coal handling plants, silos with Rs 1,344 crore, and rail sidings and rail corridors at Rs 1,785 crore made up 29% of CIL’s entire capex during the period.

Larsen & Toubro’s Heavy Engineering arm has secured significant contracts for its various business segments in the third quarter (Q3 FY22). JSL supplies 2,000 tonne stainless steel for Kanpur Metro Project

Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) has supplied 2,000-tonne steel for the Kanpur Metro Project, which was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi last week. The company provided high-quality stainless steel in various tempers (strength levels) to rolling stock manufacturer Alstom. The first train set was handed over to Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) by Alstom on September 18, 2021. The scope of the metro project included the design and development of 201 coaches.
