Israeli digital therapeutics company Theranica has announced a strategic license and supply agreement with Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd., for the exclusive marketing and distribution of its FDA-approved Nerivio in India. Nerivio is a wearable migraine treatment that stimulates the body’s pain receptors to relieve acute and chronic migraine pain. The agreement includes licensing fees for exclusive rights to market Nerivio in India.

Govt to invite bids for Concor privatisation this month

The government will invite Expressions of Interest (EoIs) or preliminary bids for privatising Container Corporation of India (Concor) in January. In Nov 2019, the Union Cabinet approved the strategic sale of a 30.8% stake (along with management control) in Concor. The government will retain a 24% stake post-sell-off but without any veto powers.

Reliance Jio launches 5G in Uttarakhand

Reliance Jio has launched its True 5G services in Uttarakhand. Jio consumers in Dehradun can avail of the Jio Welcome Offer, which includes unlimited data at up to 1 Gbps+ speed at no extra cost. Apart from the existing investment of Rs 4,950 crore, Jio will additionally invest over ₹650 crore in the deployment of a standalone 5G network in the state.

IEX’s ₹98 crore share buyback opens today

Indian Energy Exchange’s (IEX) share buyback program worth ₹98 crore opened on Wednesday. The company will buyback 49 lakh equity shares (of a face value of ₹1 each) at a maximum price of ₹200 per share. The share buyback will close on July 10. IEX is India’s first power exchange that provides an automated trading platform for electricity and renewable energy certificates.

USFDA issues warning letter to Sun Pharma’s Halol unit

The US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) has issued a warning letter to Sun Pharmaceuticals, specifying violations of norms in its manufacturing facility at Halol, Gujarat. The drug regulator noted that Sun Pharma failed to establish and follow appropriate written procedures. The procedures have been designed to prevent microbiological contamination of drug products. The Halol unit was placed under import alert on Dec 7, 2022.

Oil refiners hope for ₹50,000 crore cash compensation from govt on fuel price freeze: Report

According to a CNBC-TV18 report, state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) like HPCL, BPCL, and Indian Oil Corporation are seeking compensation of up to ₹50,000 crore to cover up for the losses they have incurred due to the freeze in fuel prices. The OMCs are demanding this compensation to make up for the losses incurred in the first half of the current financial year (H1 FY23). 

As an immediate measure, companies are of the view that diesel prices can be hiked by ₹2-3 per litre.

Commercial loan origination volumes decline 4.3% in FY22: Report

According to a report from Crif High Mark (a credit information company), commercial lending origination volumes declined by 4.3% YoY to 22.2 lakh loans in the COVID-affected FY22. Loan originations in terms of value jumped 73% to ₹66.49 lakh crore. The average ticket sizes for commercial loans across lenders witnessed a huge spike during the year, with state-owned lenders reporting the number at ₹3.34 crore in FY22.

Reliance Communications’ committee of creditors to meet on Thursday

The Committee of Creditors (CoC) of bankrupt Reliance Communications will meet on Thursday as part of a long-standing insolvency process. RCom, which housed Anil Ambani’s telecom business, has been undergoing corporate insolvency resolution for over four and a half years. The company was sent to the bankruptcy courts in May 2018 and started the insolvency process under the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code (IBC) in 2019.

Indian banks, vendors, and creditors have claimed ₹86,000 crore in dues from RCom.

While the company is planning to increase capital expenditure (capex) by 10-15%, it has no plans to charge a premium rate for 5G services as it has not worked in several countries that tried to do so. The capex will be spent on radios (mobile antennas), fibre cables, broadband, enterprise technology data centres, etc.

Coal India Ltd (CIL) Chairman Pramod Agrawal said the company will achieve the production target of 700 million tonnes (MT) for the current financial year (FY23). Adani Transmission has formed a subsidiary, BEST Smart Metering Ltd (BSML), to undertake the smart meter business. Recently, the Central govt. launched the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to help power distribution companies (DISCOMs) improve their operational efficiencies. Under the RDSS, 17.34 crore prepaid smart meters and 49.02 lakh distribution transmission meters have been sanctioned across 23 states with a total sanctioned cost of ₹1.15 lakh crore.

Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. (a joint venture of Tata Power and the NCT of Delhi) to set up a 255 megawatts (MW) hybrid power project in Karnataka. The project will be commissioned within 24 months. The power generated from the project will be supplied to Tata Power- DDL, which supplies electricity to over 7 million entities in North Delhi.

SEBI bans Moneytree Research, its proprietor from securities market for 3 years

The Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has barred Moneytree Research and its proprietor Narendra Madan Rathod from the securities markets for three years for providing unauthorised investment services. In its order, the market regulator found that Moneytree and Rathod were never registered with SEBI in any capacity as an intermediary. SEBI has directed Moneytree to refund the money received from investors within three months.

Indowind Energy’s board has approved a rights issue of 3.58 crore equity shares for ₹43.07 crore. The right issue will open on January 27, 2023, and close on February 10, 2023. LIC Housing Finance hikes lending rate by 0.35%

Mortgage lender LIC Housing Finance Ltd. has hiked its lending rate by 0.35%. The minimum rate of interest will now get revised to 8.65% for the best-rated borrower. “The increase in rates is in tune with the market conditions,” said the company’s managing director and chief executive Y Viswanatha Gowd. He added that there is good sustenance in the home-buying activity in the real estate sector at present.

Frauds fall nearly 50% at banks: RBI data

Instances of financial fraud are falling in the banking system as institutions have become more aware of the cyber threats, said an RBI report. According to data shared by the central bank, the quantum of frauds fell 46% YoY to ₹19,485 crore between April to September 2022. The number of fraud cases reported by private sector banks outnumbered those by public sector banks for the second consecutive year in FY22.

Reliance Jio added 14.1 lakh wireless subscribers in October 2022, while Bharti Airtel gained 8 lakh subscribers. Vodafone Idea (Vi) continued to suffer heavy customer losses and is unable to compete effectively with its financially stronger rivals. Vi lost 35 lakh subscribers in Oct, further shrinking its total subscriber base to 24.56 crore. Data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) showed that Jio and Bharti Airtel’s total user bases stood at 42.13 crore and 36.5 crore, respectively.

Car sales in India set to hit record 38 lakh units in 2022: Report

According to an Economic Times report, India’s automakers are projected to end this calendar year with sales of ~38 lakh passenger vehicles (PVs), driven by sustained demand and improved component supplies that helped them increase production. This projection exceeds the previous record by more than 4 lakh vehicles. Sales in the first 11 months of 2022 have already crossed the previous annual record of 33.9 lakh units set in 2018.

HDFC Bank Ltd is looking to issue 10 lakh credit cards a month, said Parag Rao, the bank’s country head for payments business, consumer finance, digital banking & marketing. Retail Inflation Eases to 5.88% in Nov – Top Indian Market Updates

India’s retail inflation eases to an 11-month low of 5.88% in Nov

India’s retail inflation (based on the Consumer Price Index or CPI) eased to an 11-month low of 5.88% in November on an annual basis. The figure came within the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) tolerance band for inflation of 2-6% for the first time this year. CPI stood at 6.77% in October. The decline can be attributed to a fall in food prices, which account for almost 40% of India’s CPI basket. Food inflation for November came in at 4.67%, compared to 7.01% in Oct. 

Meanwhile, India’s factory output (measured by the Index of Industrial Production or IIP) witnessed a (-)4% contraction in October 2022.

India’s steel output grows 5% to 10.34 MT in Nov: SteelMint

According to SteelMint India, India’s crude steel output rose by about 5% YoY to 10.34 million tonnes (MT) in November 2022. SAIL, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, JSPL, AMNS India, and RINL produced 6.28 MT of steel, and the remaining 4.06 MT came from the secondary sector. The consumption of the alloy surged 13.42% to 9.66 MT in November, compared to 8.52 MT a year ago.

Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) will invest ₹2,150 crores to drill 53 exploratory wells in Andhra Pradesh. It will carry out the exploration of 50 wells in the Krishna Godavari (KG) basin in East and West Godavari districts. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is facing a class action civil rights lawsuit from a former employee in the US for discriminatory hiring practices. Shawn Katz has filed a lawsuit against TCS seeking relief for alleged discrimination based on race and national origin at the US District Court for the District of New Jersey. He alleged that the IT firm discriminates against non-South Asian and non-Indian applicants and employees.

Dalmia Bharat to acquire Jaypee Cement for ₹5,666 crore

Dalmia Bharat Ltd’s cement subsidiary will acquire the cement and power plants of Jaiprakash Associates Ltd for ₹5,666 crores. The assets include a cement manufacturing capacity of 9.4 million tonnes (MT), a clinker capacity of 6.7 MT, and thermal power plants of 280 megawatts (MW). The new plants will take Dalmia Cement’s cement manufacturing capacity from 35.9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at present to 46.3 MTPA.

All-India electricity demand may grow 7% to 1,480 BU in FY23: Icra

Electricity demand in India is expected to grow 7% year-on-year (YoY) to 1,480 billion units (BU) in the current financial year (FY23), according to rating agency Icra. In the previous financial year (FY22), the all-India power demand was at 1,380 BU. The estimates are based on the fact that all-India electricity demand increased 10.6% YoY in the first eight months of FY23 amidst a severe heat wave in the north and central India.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd has received a warning letter from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) for manufacturing lapses (including failure to establish required laboratory control mechanisms) at its Goa-based manufacturing plant. The warning letter summarises significant violations of Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) regulations for finished pharmaceuticals. USFDA inspected the manufacturing facility from May 12, 2022, to May 20, 2022.

Adani Enterprises to raise up to ₹20,000 crore via FPO

Adani Enterprises Ltd’s board has approved a proposal to raise up to ₹20,000 crore through a follow-on public offer (FPO). The capital raise will boost the Adani Group’s aggressive growth across business verticals, both organically and via acquisitions.

As per a Financial Times report, Adani Group is planning to invest more than $4 billion in a petrochemical complex in Gujarat. Gautam Adani also plans to launch a “super app” in the next 3-6 months to connect Adani airport passengers with other Adani Group services.

According to a Guardian report, Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover has decided to cut production at factories in Solihull & Halewood (UK) between January & March. Semiconductor shortages have left JLR customers waiting more than a year for their vehicles, with sales suspended for some variants.

Castrol India Ltd (CIL) will acquire a 7.09% stake in TVS Automobile Solutions’ digital subsidiary Ki Mobility Solutions (KMS) with an investment of ₹487.5 crore in an all-cash deal. With this strategic investment, CIL aims to expand its presence in service & maintenance for both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles (EV). It will also leverage myTVS’ digital and operational capabilities.

Indian Energy Exchange’s (IEX) board has approved a share buyback of up to Rs 98 crore at ₹200 per share through the open market route. The maximum buyback price of ₹200 per share represents a 36.01% premium to Thursday’s closing price of ₹147.05 on the BSE. The maximum number of equity shares to be bought back under the buyback would be 49 lakh.

Nykaa records 12x jump in revenue on first day of Pink Friday Sale

Nykaa recorded a 75% year-on-year (YoY) growth in gross merchandise value (GMV) and a 12-fold jump in revenue on Day 1 of its Pink Friday sale. The company recorded over 400 orders per minute on Nov 21. The number of visitors on Day 1 of the sale grew 37% YoY to 1 crore. Wipro Q2 Results: Net profit falls 9% YoY to ₹2,660 crore

Wipro Ltd reported a 9.2% YoY decline in consolidated net profit to ₹2,659 crore for the quarter ended March (Q2 FY23). Its revenue from operations rose 14.6% YoY to ₹22,539.7 crore during the same period. In constant currency terms, the IT services segment revenue increased by 4.1% QoQ and 12.9% YoY. Retail inflation rises to 5-month high of 7.41% in September

India’s retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), rose to a five-month high of 7.41% in September. CPI stood at 7% in August. Inflation in the food basket rose to 8.60% in Sept from 7.62% in August. The fuel and light segment rose 10.39% last month.

India’s factory output, measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) witnessed a contraction of (-)0.8% YoY to 131.3 in August.

HCL Tech Q2 Results: Net profit rises 7% YoY to ₹3,489 crore

HCL Technologies Ltd reported a 7.1% YoY (or 6.3% QoQ) increase in consolidated net profit to ₹3,489 crore for the quarter ended March (Q2 FY23). Its revenue from operations rose 19.5% YoY to ₹24,686 crore during the same period. The total contract value of deals rose 6% YoY and 16% QoQ to $2.38 billion in Q2. The IT company’s board has declared a dividend of ₹10 per share.

According to an OpenSignal report, Bharti Airtel users enjoyed the best quality of service on 4G networks with the fastest download speeds, while Reliance Jio had the best coverage. Users on Airtel clocked 13.6 Mbps download speeds, marginally faster than Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio by 0.3-0.6 Mbps. Airtel delivered a superior experience in streaming videos, multiplayer gaming, and OTT services.

Coal India partners three PSUs for four gasification projects

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has signed agreements with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, and GAIL (India) Ltd to set up four surface gasification projects. It aims to gasify 100 million tonnes (MT) of coal into syngas for use in the downstream production of value-added chemicals in the next eight years. In the first phase (from 2020-2024). 4 MT will be gasified with an investment of ₹20,000 crore. 

Sonata Software signs business transformation deal with Ireland-based eir evo

Sonata Software Ltd has signed an agreement with eir evo to support the standardization of their customer relationship management (CRM) platform, migrating them from Salesforce to Microsoft Dynamics. The compensation will be rolled out to Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL).

Payment through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) crossed a milestone of ₹11 lakh crore in September, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The platform saw 678 crore transactions last month. Payment through UPI had crossed ₹10 lakh crore in May 2022. [UPI is an instant real-time payment system that facilitates inter-bank peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions.]

Reliance Industries’s arm RSBVL and US-based Sanmina Corporation have set up a joint venture to manufacture 4G and 5G hardware for Indian and overseas markets. The JV was set up at a total enterprise valuation of ~₹3,300 crore. It will manufacture hardware products at Sanmina’s 100-acre campus in Chennai. Reliance Strategic Business Ventures Ltd (RSBVL) will hold a 50.1% stake in the JV, while Sanmina will hold 49.9% stake.

Manufacturing PMI slows to 3-month low of 55.1 in Sept

India’s manufacturing sector activity fell to a three-month low in September 2022. The S&P Global India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 55.1 in September, compared to 56.2 in August. However, output remained solid despite global headwinds and recession fears. Input costs rose at the slowest rate in almost two years as suppliers’ stocks improved in line with subdued global demand for raw materials.

PMI is a month-on-month calculation, and a value above 50 represents an expansion compared to the previous month.

JSW Cement Ltd will raise ₹400 crore through a sustainability-linked loan from MUFG Bank India to fund the company’s capacity expansion plans. MUFG Bank acted as the mandated lead arranger, bookrunner (MLAB), and sustainability loan coordinator for this transaction. The fundraise will help JSW Cement towards its target of building up to 25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity by FY25.

Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) Ltd’s cargo volumes reached 26.1 million metric tonnes (MMT) in September, recording an increase of 13% YoY. In the first six months of FY23, APSEZ managed 177.5 MMT of cargo, an increase of 11% over the corresponding period last year. The company said it is well aligned to meet its annual cargo volume guidance of 350-360 MMT in FY23.

Reliance Jio is in talks with global network operators to supply its locally developed end-to-end 5G stack. CNG prices may go up by at least Rs 8-12 per kg

As per an Economic Times report, compressed natural gas (CNG) prices are likely to be hiked by ₹8-12 per kg after the Central government raised the prices of input natural gas to a record high. The price of gas piped to household kitchens may be hiked by over ₹6 per unit. Last week, the govt. raised the prices of gas produced from old fields from $6.1 per million BTU to $8.57 per million British thermal units (BTU).

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd reported the highest ever monthly wholesales of 64,486 vehicles in September, mainly driven by strong demand for its sports utility vehicles. The automaker had dispatched 28,112 passenger and commercial vehicles in September 2021. Last month, M&M posted its highest ever monthly sales of SUVs at 34,262 units, recording a 2x year-on-year (YoY) jump.

Retailers report 15% growth in sales in August: RAI

According to a survey by the Retailers Association of India (RAI), retail businesses across India reported a growth of 15% in sales when compared to pre-pandemic levels (August 2019). “Most items have witnessed inflation. Retailers are indicating that higher price items are selling well, and lower price items are not seeing as much growth,” said Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of RAI.

Sales across categories showed steady growth in August 2022, with sports goods indicating a strong performance. Footwear, quick service restaurants (QSR), and jewellery also performed better than other categories last month.

Bharati Airtel Ltd has paid Rs 8,312.4 crore to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) towards dues for spectrum acquired in the recently concluded 5G auctions. With this payment, the telco has paid four years of 2022 spectrum dues upfront. 

The upfront payment, the moratorium on spectrum dues, and AGR-related payments for four years will free up future cash flows and allow Bharti Airtel to dedicate resources to concentrate on the 5G rollout.

Indian government bond yields declined on Wednesday, with the benchmark 10-year yield crashing 10 basis points (bps), following a sharp fall in global oil prices that could further lower the inflation trajectory. The benchmark 10-year govt bond yield was at 7.1966% as of 10:25 AM today. It had fallen to 7.1947% earlier in the day, after closing at 7.2894% on Friday. Global oil prices dropped, with the benchmark Brent crude contract declining to its lowest level in six months on Tuesday.

Jio adds 42.2 lakh subscribers in June; Bharti Airtel gains 7.9 lakh users 

Reliance Jio Infocomm gained 42.23 lakh mobile subscribers in June 2022, taking its total user base to 41.3 crore. Bharti Airtel added 7.93 lakh users, and its total mobile subscriber count rose to 36.29 crore. Vodafone Idea lost nearly 18.01 lakh mobile subscribers during June. India’s total wireless subscribers count increased marginally to 114.73 crore at the end of June 2022.

M&M in talks with different states to set up EV production site

Mahindra & Mahindra has initiated talks with various state governments in India to set up manufacturing infrastructure for its upcoming range of electric sports utility vehicles (SUVs). It will evaluate incentives offered by different state governments before finalising a strategy for the production of these EVs. The automaker has lined up five new electric SUVs. The first four are expected to hit the roads between December 2024 and 2026.
