Adani Green Energy’s board approved the execution of a binding term sheet between Adani Green Energy Twenty Three Ltd and TotalEnergies. Total will make a further investment of $300 million (~₹2,490 crore) to form a new 50:50 Joint Venture (JV) company. The new JV will house a 1,050 MWac portfolio, comprising a mix of already operational, under construction, and under development assets with a blend of both, solar and wind power.

ONGC willing to wait to regain oil from Russian project

According to ONGC Videsh’s Head of Investment, ONGC wants to eventually receive a share of crude from a Russian project it partly owns. However, the company is willing to wait because Russian oil is hard to ship now. ONGC has a 20% stake in Russia’s Sakhalin-1 oil & gas project. The company is also in talks with the Russian government and company shareholders to resume taking oil under a production-sharing arrangement.

Aurobindo Pharma’s Andhra plant receives observation from USFDA 

The US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) has issued a Form 483 with one observation after inspecting a formulation production facility of Aurobindo Pharma’s unit in Andhra Pradesh. USFDA inspected the Unit IV of APL Healthcare Ltd in Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh from September 13-19, 2023. APL Healthcare Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aurobindo Pharma.

Verizon Consumer Group has categorically denied claims of it considering the acquisition of Vodafone Idea (Vi). Vodafone Idea also refuted any discussions regarding a potential acquisition with Verizon, Amazon, or Elon Musk-owned Starlink. Apollo Tyres has temporarily ceased bias off-the-road (OTR) tyre production at its manufacturing facility located in Limda, Gujarat. SJVN has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Power Finance Corporation Ltd. (PFC) for financial assistance for projects. The MoU pertains to various diversified project portfolios, including renewable energy (RE) and thermal generation projects. The overall cost of the projects is nearly ₹1.19 lakh crore. The term loan financial assistance is proposed tentatively at 70% of the project cost.

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has received a three-day strike notice from central trade unions. The notice prompts concerns about the potential impact on the nation’s coal supply and electricity generation. The Delhi High Court has upheld SBI’s eligibility criteria for selecting caretaker agencies for its automated teller machines (ATM) in Delhi. The High Court stated that SBI is best equipped to gauge the practicalities involved. Recently, a startup alleged that the eligibility criteria barred start-ups from participating in the tenders due to strict requirements. Only bidders with a minimum average annual turnover of ₹150 crore in the past three years and prior experience in providing similar services for at least five years were eligible.

According to a government document, India will make it mandatory for drugmakers to audit their raw material suppliers at least once a year. The govt is tightening rules after India-made cough syrups were linked to 141 children’s deaths worldwide. The new mandate, along with additional testing rules for cough syrup exports implemented in June, shows that India is seeking to reassure buyers about the safety of its $42 billion pharmaceuticals industry.

India’s GDP accelerates to a four-quarter high of 7.8% in Q1

According to the data from the National Statistical Office (NSO), India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) surged to a four-quarter high of 7.8% on an annual basis in the June quarter (Q1) of FY24. The growth can be attributed to central and state governments increasing capital expenditure (capex), stronger consumption demand and higher activities in the services sector. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had predicted a growth rate of 8%.

S&P BSE indices (including Sensex) will remove Jio Financial Services (JFSL) from its indices with effect from tomorrow, September 1. Jio Financial Services Ltd (JFSL) is a demerged non-banking financial services (NBFC) unit of Reliance Industries Ltd. The exchanges twice extended the removal of JFSL shares from the indices after the shares hit a lower circuit for four consecutive sessions post-listing.

Viacom18 has won BCCI media rights for ₹67.8 crore per match, outbidding Sony Pictures Networks India and Disney Star. The total value of the deal is ₹5,966 crore. The e-auction for the bilateral cricket media rights was held on Thursday. As per the tender released by the BCCI on August 2, the board had set a base price of ₹20 crore per match for Package A, which comprises the TV rights for the Indian subcontinent.

India’s Q1 fiscal deficit widens to Rs 6.06 lakh crore

According to Govt data, India’s fiscal deficit for Q1 FY24 has soared to ₹6.06 lakh crore, a significant increase from the ₹3.41 lakh crore recorded in the same period the previous year. The deficit stood at 20.5% of the Budget Estimates (BE) in the corresponding period of the financial year 2022-23. The fiscal deficit for Q1 now stands at approximately 33.9% of the projected ₹17.87 lakh crore target for the entire fiscal year.

Tata Power RE signs pact with Sanyo Special Steel Manufacturing to set up 28-MW solar plant

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has partnered with Sanyo Special Steel Manufacturing India Pvt Ltd (SSMI) to set up a 28.12-megawatt green energy plant in Maharashtra. TPREL an arm of Tata Power. The plant is expected to produce 61.875 million units (MUs) of electricity annually, which would meet the energy requirement of the steel manufacturing unit of SSMI.

JSW Group in talks with Chinese carmaker Leapmotor for EV tech: Report

JSW Group is in early talks with Chinese automaker Leapmotor to license technology to build electric vehicles in India. Under the technology licensing agreement, JSW would use Leapmotor’s platform to manufacture EVs in India under its own brand name. JSW is likely to use a single platform on which it can build at least three mid-sized sport-utility vehicles (SUVs).

Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd (SAMIL) will acquire a 100% stake in Rollon Hydraulics Private Ltd for ₹103 crore. Rollon is engaged in manufacturing, assembly, and supply of high precision turned parts, spools, and other machined components with critical engineering applications for the agriculture and off-highway segment from its two facilities based out of Bengaluru. The target business will be housed under SAMIL’s precision metals and modules division.

Cipla’s US subsidiary recalls some of its inhalers due to container defect

Cipla’s subsidiary Cipla USA has made a voluntary nationwide recall of six batches of its inhaler Albuterol Sulfated. The company recalled it due to a container defect by Cipla USA. The recalled batches were manufactured in November 2021 with an expiry date of November 2023. Cipla made the recall after a market complaint on one of the inhalers, where leakage was observed through the inhaler valve.

RIL, Adani Total Gas planning plants for compressed biogas

Reliance Industries (RIL) and Adani Total Gas (ATGL) are planning to set up 10 compressed biogas (CBG) plants each, across the country. These plants will be of up to 30 million tonnes per annum capacity. Five plants will be set in the next five years. The rest would come up later. The companies would invest up to ₹2500 crore each in setting up these plants.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) have signed a contract for the procurement of two Dornier aircraft for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) for ₹458.87 crore. The contract includes an associated engineering support package and the aircraft will be procured under the Buy Indian Category. The aircraft will be fitted with several advanced equipment, namely a glass cockpit, maritime patrol radar, electro-optic infra-red device, and mission management system, among others.

Jaiprakash Associates defaults on Rs 4,044 crore loans

Jaiprakash Associates has defaulted on loans worth ₹4,044 crore, including principal and interest. The company on June 30th defaulted on repayments of a principal amount of ₹1,660 crore and interest of ₹2,384 crore. The loans pertained to various banks, and the nature of the obligation is fund-based working capital, non-fund-based working capital, term loans and FCCB (foreign currency convertible bonds).

Torrent Power Q4 Results: Net profit at Rs 484 crore

Torrent Power reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 483.93 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4 FY23). The company had posted a net loss of Rs 487 crore last year. However, its total revenue rose 60% YoY to Rs 6,133 crore during Q4 FY23. The company’s board has recommended a dividend of Rs 4 per equity share.

The board also approved a proposal to issue non-convertible debentures worth up to Rs 3,000 crore in one or more tranches by way of private placement.

Baring EQT set to buy HDFC’s education loan unit for up to $1.5 billion

Baring Private Equity Asia EQT plans to purchase HDFC’s education loan unit, Credila Financial Services, for approximately $1.3-1.5 billion. ChrysCapital and Baring have formed a consortium for the transaction. HDFC will retain a 10% stake in the company and may sell it within the next two years. An official announcement is expected by the end of June before HDFC and HDFC Bank’s merger.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) is collaborating with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to develop a 1 MW electrolyzer manufacturing capacity in India by 2025. The research and development division of BPCL is focusing on scaling up alkaline electrolyzer technology for green hydrogen production. The company intends to involve a third party in establishing the electrolyzer manufacturing facility, and the resulting alkaline electrolyzers are expected to be 20-30% cheaper than the current market rate of approx. $800 per kW.

Kotak Mahindra Group’s asset management arm is set to invest $129 million (₹1,070 crore) in Biocon Ltd to help it fund its acquisition of Viatris Inc’s biosimilars business. Biocon Biologics completed the $3.34-billion acquisition of U.S.-based Viatris’s biosimilars business in late November. Pune-based labour union Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has filed a complaint against Wipro Ltd with the central labour ministry alleging “unethical reduction” in salary offers of more than 4,000 candidates. The offer has been made to all ‘Velocity’ graduates of the 2022-23 batch. ‘Velocity’ is a skilling and training program undertaken by Wipro Elite candidates (₹3.5 LPA) to be eligible for the Turbo package (₹6.5 LPA) after they go through some skill upgradation courses.

SBI allows BHIM-based real-time payment with Singapore

State Bank of India announced a partnership with PayNow, the online payment system of Singapore for cross-border payments. The facility is offered through SBI’s BHIM SBIPay mobile application and the linkage will allow fund transfers from India to Singapore through registered mobile numbers and from Singapore to India using the UPI ID. The inward bilateral remittance between the two countries was around $949 million in 2021.

FDI equity inflows decline 15% to $36.75 billion in Apr-Dec FY23

Foreign direct investment (FDI) into India declined by 15% YoY to $36.75 billion during the April-December of FY23, according to the latest Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade data. The computer software and hardware sector attracted the highest inflows of $8 billion during the same period. Singapore emerged as the top investor with a $13 billion FDI.

Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd (RRVL) has signed definitive agreements to acquire a 100% equity stake in Metro Cash and Carry India Pvt. Ltd, which operates under the ‘Metro India’ brand, for ₹2,850 crore. Through this acquisition, RRVL will get access to a network of Metro India stores located in prime locations across key cities, a large base of registered kiranas & institutional customers, and a strong supplier network.

Viacom18 acquires media rights to Olympic Games 2024 for $31 million

Viacom18 Media has secured exclusive media rights to broadcast the Olympic Games Paris 2024 in the Indian subcontinent. It has also bagged the non-exclusive rights to the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon 2024. According to reports, Viacom18 is believed to have paid roughly $31 million (~₹256.6 crore) to secure the rights. The company will provide multi-platform coverage of the games and ensure free-to-air television coverage within the region.

Jio deposits ₹3,720 crore in SBI escrow account to buy Reliance Infratel: Report

As per an Economic Times report, Reliance Jio has deposited ₹3,720 crore in an SBI escrow account, marking another step towards completing the acquisition of Reliance Infratel Ltd (RITL). RITL is the tower business of Reliance Communications, which is under an insolvency process. 

In November 2022, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in Mumbai approved the acquisition of RITL by Reliance Project & Property Management Services Ltd (RP&PMSL), a subsidiary of Reliance Jio that looks into the tower business.

CIL can pursue overseas acquisition of coal mines after detailed study of blocks: Parliamentary Panel

The Standing Committee on Coal, Mines, and Steel said Coal India Ltd (CIL) can still pursue the overseas acquisition of mines after a detailed study and analysis of the blocks, especially for low ash coking coal. The committee is of the view that this will not only reduce the import of fossil fuels but also open new avenues of mining abroad. 

[In 2009, CIL had acquired prospecting licences for coal blocks in Mozambique through one of its wholly-owned subsidiaries. However, it was found that the quality of coal in the allocated blocks was inferior and extraction was commercially unviable.]

NTPC, GE Power signs pact to enable more usage of low carbon fuel in plants

NTPC and GE Power India Ltd have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reduce the amount of coal used in power plants and replace it with low-carbon fuels like methanol, agriculture waste, biomass, and ammonia. The two entities will also develop, test, and demonstrate technologies that allow total co-firing with lower carbon fuels in coal-fired power plants.

The government is planning to hold a 5G spectrum auction in early June, as per telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnav. The minister stated that the Department of Telecom is on track to meet its deadlines and that the process to solve industry concerns about spectrum price is underway. TRAI has seconded a massive auction proposal worth over Rs 7.5 lakh crore for over 1 lakh megahertz spectrum, in case the government allocates it for 30 years and Rs 5.07 lakh crore if it is for 20 years.

Canada-based Sagen picks a 31% stake in India Mortgage Guarantee Corporation.

Sagen, a Brookefield subsidiary and Canadian mortgage insurer, is acquiring a 31% share in India Mortgage Guarantee Corporation (IMGC). The deal’s value was not disclosed, and it would be completed subject to legislative and regulatory approvals. According to a public statement, IMGC will use the new funds to expand its business and improve its operational and technological capabilities. IMGC was set up in 2008 as India’s first mortgage guarantee company(MGC). The company has since received investment from  National Housing Bank, International Finance Corp (IFC), Asian Development Bank, and Enact Holdings Inc.

P&G Hygiene and Health Care Q3 Results: Profit Up 4.6% to Rs 102.85 crore.

Procter & Gamble Hygiene and Health Care Ltd recorded a 4.59% increase in net profit to Rs 102.85 crore in the third quarter ended March 2022Rs 98.33 crore last year. Revenue from operations increased by 28.11% to Rs 973.26 crore, up from Rs 759.66 crore the previous year. Total expenses were up 28.36% at Rs 828.19 crore, against Rs 645.18 crore in the previous year.

SBI Life Q4 Results: Profit advances 26% YoY to Rs 672 crore

SBI Life Insurance recorded a 26.27% year-on-year (YoY) increase in net profit to Rs 672.15 crore, from Rs 532.30 crore the previous quarter.  Net premium income increased by 12% year on year to Rs 17,433.77 crore, up from Rs 15,555.74 crore the previous quarter. In the quarter under review, total income increased by 2.5% to Rs 21,427.88 crore, up from Rs 20,896.70 crore the previous year.

Vedanta Q4 Results: Profit declines 10% to Rs 5,799 crore YoY

For the current quarter Q4FY22, Vedanta recorded a 4.8% year-on-year (YoY) reduction in net profit standing at Rs 7,261 crore. The business had a net profit of Rs 7,629 crore in the same period the previous year. Revenue from operations increased by 41.14% to Rs 39,342 crore, up from Rs 27,874 crore in the previous quarter.

Viacom18 to get an investment worth ~$2 billion

Viacom 18 Media Private Limited is an Indian joint venture between Reliance-owned TV18 and US-based media company Paramount Global. Viacom18 will receive a Rs 13,500 crore ($1.8 billion) investment from Bodhi Tree Systems – run by James Murdoch and Uday Shankar, a former head of Walt Disney India. Reliance Projects & Property Management Services Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries, will invest another Rs 1,645 crore. Paramount Global shall continue to be a shareholder and supply its premium global content to Viacom18.

World Bank approves $47 million for India’s Mission Karmayog

The World Bank Board of Executive Directors approved a $47 million project today to support the Government of India’s Mission Karmayogi, a national program to build civil service capacity, said the bank in a statement. 

Mission Karmayogi is a program aimed to modernize thinking and approach, improve human resource management practices in the government, and improve the skillset of the millions of civil servants across the country. 

There are nearly 18 million civil servants employed across India, with approximately two-thirds at the state government and local authority levels. While India has steadily improved its performance over the past decade, through the implementation of Mission Karmayogi the Government aims to make the country’s civil service force more future-ready and capable of meeting twenty-first-century challenges, the statement further said.

PNB Housing Finance Q4 Results: Net Profit up 34% to Rs 170 crore

PNB Housing Finance report a 34% rise in consolidated net profit at Rs 170 crore compared with Rs 127 crore, the previous year. This was the case even as sales declined 18.52% YoY to Rs 6195.93 crore. Net Interest Income declined 37% QoQ to Rs Rs 377 crore compared to Rs 593 crore. While Gross NPA stood at 7.61% of loan assets while the net NPA ratio stood at 4.49%.

Tata Power to set up 5,000 EV charging points across Maharashtra

Tata Power has partnered with Maharashtra’s National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) to install up to 5,000 electric vehicle charging outlets across the developer properties of NAREDCO’s members. The two have signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU). Through Tata Power’s EZ Charge mobile app, EV owners across members’ properties will enjoy 24×7 vehicle charging, monitoring, and e-payments services.

India’s fourth Omicron case detected near Mumbai

A 33-year-old man from Maharashtra who travelled to Mumbai from South Africa late last month has tested positive for the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. It is the fourth such case confirmed in India. Cases of the Omicron variant have already been detected in Karnataka and Gujarat. The Omicron strain has been marked as a “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Lupin signs distribution agreement for Pegfilgrastim with Brazil-based Biomm 

Lupin Ltd has entered into an exclusive distribution and marketing agreement with Biomm SA in Brazil. Under the terms of the agreement, Biomm will distribute and market biosimilar Pegfilgrastim in Brazil. The drug is indicated to reduce the duration of neutropenia (an abnormally low count of a type of white blood cell) and the incidence of febrile neutropenia in patients receiving chemotherapy.

The business model for combustion vehicles will not work beyond 2025 as young people will not buy such vehicles, Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant. At a time when India has set the target to become net-zero by 2070, Kant said that there is no future for companies that do not go green. According to him, the period beyond 2025 belongs to only electric two and three-wheelers. He termed renewables, battery storage, clean mobility, electrolysers, and green hydrogen as sunrise sectors, which will grow at a fast pace.

The public shareholders of HG Industries Ltd (HGIL) have declined to tender shares in an open offer by Greenlam Industries Ltd. Greenlam has acquired 34.70 lakh equity shares representing 74.9% of the total paid-up equity share capital of HGIL at Rs 40.10 per equity share. Further, an open offer was made for the acquisition of the entire public shareholding of HGIL up to 11.62 lakh equity shares (representing 25.06% share capital) at Rs 41 per share. However, none of the public shareholders have tendered equity shares in the open offer.

Four IPOs to hit the markets next week

RateGain Travel Technologies, Shriram Properties, CE Info Systems (MapmyIndia), and Metro Brands will launch their initial public offerings (IPOs) between December 7th and 10th. RateGain Travel Technologies is the largest Software as a Service (SaaS) company in the hospitality and travel industry in India. It has fixed a price band for its Rs 1,336 crore IPO at Rs 405-425 per share.

South India-based residential real estate development company Shriram Properties is set to launch its Rs 600 crore-IPO on December 8 at a price band of Rs 113-118 per share.

CE Info Systems, popularly known for its brand MapmyIndia, will launch its initial public offer on December 9.

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-backed Metro Brands will launch its maiden public offer for subscription on December 10. It is one of the largest Indian footwear speciality retailers that operates stores under the Metro, Mochi, Walkway, and Crocs brands.

Viacom18 picks up NBA media rights for three years

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and private broadcasting group Viacom18 have entered into a multi-year partnership to live-broadcast NBA games and programming across television and over-the-top streaming. Under the agreement, Viacom18 will distribute live NBA games in English and Hindi on its channels like Vh1, MTV, Voot, and Jio TV for three years. The deal with Viacom18 will kick-start with the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Season in 2021-22.

IGL hikes retail CNG prices in Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan

Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) has hiked compressed natural gas (CNG) prices in Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan, effective 6 AM on December 4. CNG in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi was hiked to Rs 53.04 per kg, whereas the price in Gurugram stood at Rs 60.40 per kg.
