Reliance Industries’ shareholders, creditors approve demerger of financial services arm

Reliance Industries’ shareholders and creditors have approved the demerger of its financial services unit with nearly 100% of the votes cast in favour. The unit will be renamed Jio Financial Services. Shareholders of Reliance Industries will receive one share of the demerged entity for every one share held in Reliance Industries. Shares of Jio Financial Services will be listed on both BSE and NSE after demerger.

HDFC reported a 20% YoY jump in net profit to Rs 4,426 crore for Q4 FY23. Its total operating revenue rose 35.6% YoY to Rs 16,679.43 crore during the quarter. The bank’s Net Interest Income (NII) stood at Rs 5,321 crore, up 16% YoY. The bank’s board has approved a dividend of Rs 44 per equity share.

Adani Ports sells coastal international terminals in Myanmar for $30 million

Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd (ASPEZ) has sold its Myanmar coastal international terminals to Solar Energy for $30 million. Solar Energy will pay the amount to APSEZ within three business days after completing compliance. Once APSEZ receives the transaction value, the equity transfer will occur and its exit will be concluded.

In other news, APSEZ handled 32.3 million tonnes of total cargo in April 2023, a YoY growth of 12.8%.

Patel Engineering and its Joint Venture (JV) partners have been awarded EPC Turnkey Basis projects worth Rs 1,310 crore. These projects are the Tumkur Branch Canal (Package III) Micro Irrigation Project from Visvesvaraya Jala Nigama and the Sher Micro Irrigation Project from the Water Resources Department of Madhya Pradesh.

Vehicle registrations declines by 4% in April

Vehicle registrations in India declined by 4% to 1,724,935 units in April, with retail sales of two-wheelers down 7.3% and of passenger vehicles down 1.35%. According to data from the Federation of Automotive Dealers Associations (FADA), the decline was due to the shift to BSVI norms, untimely rains and advanced purchases in March ahead of an anticipated price rise.

Zydus Lifesciences gets final approval from USFDA to manufacture ulcer drug

Zydus Lifesciences has received final approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) to manufacture and market Sucralfate Tablets. The drug is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the intestines. The drug will be manufactured at Zydus Lifesciences’ topical manufacturing facility in Special Economic Zone, Ahmedabad.

IGL signs MoU with ACME Cleantech to jointly supply GreenHydrogen, set up infrastructure

Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Acme Cleantech Solutions Pvt Ltd (ACME) to explore potential business opportunities for Green Hydrogen. IGL and ACME will explore opportunities to set up hydrogen generation plants, including electrolysers. They will also blend green hydrogen into IGL’s existing pipeline networks supplying gas to households, industries, and commercial setups, and CNG for vehicles.

India’s coal production rises 22.6% in 5 years to 893.08 MT in FY23

India’s coal production has registered a growth of about 23% in the last five years to 893.08 million tonnes (MT) in FY23. In the last five years, the production of Coal India Limited (CIL) has increased from 606.89 MT in FY19 to 703.21 MT, registering a growth of 15.9%. Contribution from captive and other mines to the total coal output also increased to 122.72 MT in FY23, up 113.7%.

Adani pays back $200 million Holcim debt, seeks loan extension

Adani Cement Industries has pre-paid $200 million from the $1 billion mezzanine loan it took from global banks to fund the acquisition of Ambuja Cements and its subsidiary ACC Ltd from Switzerland’s Holcim Group for $6.4 billion. The pre-payment will help Adani seek an extension of the debt taken to fund the acquisition by three years.

Star Health Q4 Results: Net profit at Rs 619 crore

Star Health and Allied Insurance reported a net profit of Rs 619 crore for Q4 FY23, in contrast to a loss of Rs 1,041 crore in Q4 FY22. Thermax has received an order worth Rs 271.50 crore from India’s largest private sector oil refinery for mechanical balance of plant (MBoP) works for the captive power plant at their new oil-to-chemical (O2C) facility in western India. India’s forex reserves fall $2.17 billion to $584.25 billion

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s foreign exchange reserves decreased by $2.165 billion to $584.248 billion as of April 21, 2023. The country’s forex reserves had risen to a nine-month high of $586.412 billion the previous week. The dip was largely attributed to a decrease in foreign currency assets, which fell by $2.146 billion to $514.489 billion.

Oil & Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) plans to invest Rs 1 lakh crore by 2030 to double the combined petrochemicals capacity of its subsidiary Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) and joint venture ONGC Petro additions Ltd (OPaL) to 8 million metric tonnes per annum. The plan will involve the construction of two mega projects on the east and west coast that will either directly use crude to produce chemicals or take other feedstocks.

Dalmia Bharat has executed definitive agreements with Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL) to acquire JAL’s cement assets for an enterprise value of Rs 1,500 crore and costs and expenses of up to Rs 190 crore. The acquisition will be subject to various clearances and approvals related to JP Super plant and mines. Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd (DCBL), a subsidiary of Dalmia Bharat, will acquire JP Super Cement Plant in Uttar Pradesh.

HDFC Life Insurance reported a net profit of Rs 359 crore for Q4 FY23, which is flat compared with the same period last year. However, net profit for the quarter rose 14% from Q3 FY23. The net premium income stood at Rs 19,426 crore, up 36% YoY. The first-year premium income for the quarter rose 73% to Rs 4,467 crore. Union Bank to raise funds up to Rs 10,100 crore via QIPs and Bonds

Union Bank of India is planning to raise up to Rs 10,100 crore in capital via public issue, Basel III compliant Additional Tier 1 (AT1) bonds, and Tier 2 bonds. The capital will be raised in tranches of up to Rs 8,000 crore through public issue, rights issue, and private placements, including Qualified Institutions Placements (QIPs). The remaining Rs 2,100 crore will be raised through Basel III compliant AT1 and/or Tier 2 bonds, including foreign currency-denominated bonds.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd has launched its ophthalmology treatment CEQUA in the Indian market to treat Dry Eye Disease (DED). Serum Life Sciences will make an additional equity investment of $150 million in Biocon Biologics (BBL), a subsidiary of Biocon. It had invested $150 million in Biocon Biologics in November 2022, and this additional investment will be made through the conversion of the $150 million loan provided to Biocon Pharma into equity in BBL. The total aggregate equity investment of SILS in BBL will now amount to $300 million.

NMDC plans to increase iron ore output by more than 21% in FY23

NMDC plans to increase iron ore production to 50 million tonnes in the current financial year (FY24), up 21% from last year. The company’s output in Q4 FY23 was its highest for a quarter, and it expects uniform production for FY24 (except for the September quarter due to monsoon rains). NMDC has iron ore mines in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka and is exploring lithium reserves in Australia, where it holds a majority stake in a mine.

Tata Steel has begun trial injection of hydrogen gas in one of the six blast furnaces at its Jamshedpur plant in Jharkhand. The trial will continue for 4-5 days and will provide insights into operating blast furnaces with greener fuel injectants, reducing fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The trial has the potential to reduce coke rate by 10%, resulting in a 7-10% reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne of crude steel produced.

Adani Ports starts $130 million buyback of bonds to prepay near-term debt

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) is set to buy outstanding 3.375% senior notes due 2024 for $130 million in cash. The purchase will be funded through cash reserves available with the company. The move is aimed at partly prepaying the company’s near-term debt maturities and to convey its comfortable liquidity position. After the completion of this tender offer, the outstanding notes are expected to remain at $520 million.

Bank of Maharashtra Q4 Results: Net profit jumps 135% YoY to Rs 840 crore

Bank of Maharashtra announced a 135% YoY jump in net profit to Rs 840 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4 FY23). Its Net Interest Income (NII) increased by over 35% YoY to Rs 2,187 crore during the same period. The bank’s net non-performing assets (NNPA) declined to 0.25%, compared to 0.47% in the same quarter last year. The bank’s board recommended a dividend of Rs 1.3 per share. 

The board also approved a capital raise of up to Rs 7,500 crore via equity and debt.

Maharashtra Seamless receives Rs 262 crore order from ONGC 

Maharashtra Seamless has received an order from ONGC for the supply of seamless tubing pipes and accessories to be delivered to five Indian states. The company will gradually dispatch the order over 10 months. Zydus Lifesciences gets USFDA approval for heart diseases treatment drug

Zydus Lifesciences has obtained final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for Icosapent Ethyl capsules for the treatment of heart diseases. These tablets are used to reduce fat (triglyceride) levels in the blood in adult patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia. According to IQVIA data, the annual sales of Icosapent Ethyl Capsules in the United States were $1,316 million for the 12 months ended February 2023.

Bharti Airtel has partnered with Secure Meters to deploy narrow band (NB-IoT) powered smart meters in Bihar, India. Under the partnership, Airtel will deploy NB-IoT services to power 1.3 million homes via a smart meter solution. The deployment is said to be India’s first NB-IoT solution on a narrow band with a fall-back option that will work on 2G and 4G. It will also ensure real-time connectivity and uninterrupted transfer of critical data.

HDFC Bank has received approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to acquire 20% or more stake in HDFC’s Investments-subsidiary, Griha Pte. Limited. Griha Pte is a foreign step-down subsidiary of HDFC Limited. The scheme was approved by the HDFC board and received no objection or approval letters from various Indian authorities, including the RBI, SEBI, CCI, and NCLT.

Reliance Industries announced a 19% YoY increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 19,299 crore. Revenue is up 2% YoY to Rs 2.16 lakh crore. The company’s EBITDA in Q4 reached a record high of Rs 41,389 crore, rising 22% YoY.

However, due to an expanded asset base across all businesses, depreciation surged 43% YoY to Rs 11,456 crore. Finance costs rose 64% YoY to Rs 5,819 crore on account of higher interest rates and loan balances. RIL’s gross revenue in FY23 rose 23% YoY to Rs 9.76 lakh crore, indicating continued growth momentum across all businesses.

India’s forex reserves rise $1.65 billion to $586.41 billion

India’s forex reserves increased to $586.41 billion, up by $1.65 billion for the week ended April 14. The rise in foreign currency assets (FCA) was the main contributor, which increased to $516.63 billion. The rupee appreciated against the US dollar by 8 paise to close at 82.09. This was supported by softening crude oil prices in the international markets.

Hindustan Zinc’s net profit fell 12% YoY to Rs 2,583 crore in Q4 FY23. Revenue dropped 4% YoY to Rs 8,281 crore due to lower zinc, lead, and silver prices, partly offset by higher metal and silver volumes. The company reported a 16% YoY decline in EBITDA to Rs 4,208 crore. It recorded the highest-ever PAT of Rs 10,511 crore for the full year (FY23) on the back of record production of over 1 million tonnes of metal.

Credit Suisse takes SpiceJet to Supreme Court over unpaid dues

Credit Suisse has moved the Supreme Court (SC) against SpiceJet, alleging contempt of court over the failure of the domestic carrier to comply with a court-approved settlement plan for payment of dues. SpiceJet told SC on April 21 that it would pay a tranche the same day and the next in May.  The Supreme Court put the contempt plea on hold and will now hear the case on May 17.

Fortis acquires Gurugram-based Medeor Hospital for Rs 225 crore

Fortis Healthcare will acquire Medeor Hospital in Manesar, Gurugram, from VPS Group for Rs 225 crore. The acquisition will be funded through a mix of debt and internal accruals and is expected to close by end of July 2023. The hospital has a potential bed capacity of 350 beds and can be operationalized in a phased manner within nine months. This will be Fortis’ largest acquisition following its controlling stake acquisition by Malaysia-based IHH Healthcare.

ICICI Securities Q4 Results: Net profit falls 23% to Rs 337 crore 

ICICI Securities reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 263 crore for Q4 2023, a 23% YoY decline. Revenue from operations also fell from Rs 892 crore in Q4 FY22 to Rs 885 crore in Q4 FY23.  However, income from interest for the quarter rose 35% YoY to Rs 287 crore. The brokerage income was Rs 310 crore. The company has recommended a final dividend of Rs 9.25 per equity share.

Tata Communications has reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 326 crore for the quarter ended March, down 11% YoY. IndusInd Bank signs $100 million loan deal with JBIC to aid Japanese OEMs in India

IndusInd Bank has signed a long-term loan agreement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to provide credit facilities to companies in the supply chain of Japanese origin equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in India. The funds raised will be used to provide need-based credit facilities to upstream and downstream companies of Japanese construction equipment firms in India, including component suppliers, dealers, and final buyers of the machinery. Shakti Pumps has received a pending USD 1 million from EXIM Bank on behalf of the Government of Uganda for a project aimed at providing safe and sustainable water supply to half a million people in 20 rural districts. The project involves the supply of a solar-powered water pumping system, for which Shakti Pumps was awarded a contract worth USD 35.30 million in March 2021 by the Ministry of Water and Environment of the Ugandan government.

UltraTech Cement has commissioned a 2.2 MTPA Brownfield expansion at its grinding unit in Patliputra, Bihar, increasing its grinding capacity to 4.7 mtpa. Power Grid Corporation’s Board of Directors has approved investments of nearly Rs 4,071 crore for two transmission projects in India. Credit card outstanding rises 29.6% to reach record high level in Jan

The credit card outstanding in January rose 29.6% to an all-time high of Rs 1.87 lakh crore on back of increased digitisation and rising consumer confidence in the post-Covid period. As per the latest data of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the credit card outstanding has recorded a growth of over 20% in the 10 months of the current fiscal. June recorded the highest growth of 30.7%.

Blue Star to take up expansion at Dadra, Sri City manufacturing facilities

Blue Star Ltd will undertake capacity expansion plans at its facilities in Dadra and Sri City. In Jan, the company commenced production at its unit in Sri City in Andhra Pradesh, which was set up at an investment of Rs 350 crore. Blue Star has manufacturing plants in Himachal Pradesh, Ahmedabad, Dadra, Wada (Maharashtra) and Sri City.

Jindal Stainless to invest Rs 120 crore to set up two rooftop solar projects

Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) will invest Rs 120 crore to set up rooftop solar capacities at its Jajpur and Hisar facilities. While a project of 21-megawatt peak (MWp) will be set up in Jajpur, another 6 MWp rooftop solar capacity will be installed at the company’s unit in Hisar. Both projects are scheduled to be completed by March 2024.

HAL and L&T sign deal with India defence for 70 HTT-40 trainer aircraft and cadet training ships

The Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for the procurement of 70 HTT-40 trainer aircraft worth over Rs 6,800 crore. It has also entered into agreements with Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) for the acquisition of three Cadet Training Ships worth more than Rs 3,100 crore. These deals come as a big boost to India’s efforts to achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in the defense sector.

Vedanta to buy 6% more stake in Hindustan Zinc for Rs 7,900 crore: Report

Vedanta, which currently owns 64.9% stake in Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), is reportedly planning to acquire an additional 6% stake in the company as and when the government sells its holdings. The Indian govt is planning to sell its 15% stake in HZL by March-end. Sources say Vedanta is looking to raise about $1 billion from three foreign banks to fund the acquisition.

GST collection in Nov at ₹1.46 lakh crore, up 11% YoY

The gross Goods & Service Tax (GST) revenue collection for November stood at ₹1,45,867 crore, up 11% year-on-year (YoY). The Central GST accounted for ₹25,681 crore and State GST for ₹32,651 crore. The IGST accounted for ₹77,103 crore. The GST authorities have adopted advanced analytics of live data to track transactions.

Manufacturing PMI hits 3-month high in November

Manufacturing sector activity in India touched a three-month high in November 2022 as new orders and exports expanded. The S&P Global India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 55.7 in November, compared to 55.3 in October. There was strong demand and a substantial easing of cost pressures last month.

PMI is a month-on-month calculation, and a value above 50 represents an expansion compared to the previous month.

IOCL to set up a new company for green business

Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) is planning to set up a new company to house its alternative energy businesses. It is venturing into green hydrogen production and targeting 5% of the hydrogen produced by it as green hydrogen by 2027-28 and 10% by 2029-30. Discussions are in advanced stages with FIIs and other stakeholders to create a structure for the company.

RIL is the most valuable company in India: Report

Reliance Industries Ltd has topped the list of 500 most valuable companies in India according to Axis Bank’s Burgundy Private and Hurun India’s latest report. RIL’s value stood at ₹17.2 lakh crore, up 3.6% compared to last year. Tata Consultancy secured the second spot despite its value contracting 10.8% YoY to ₹11.6 lakh crore. It was followed by HDFC Bank with a value of Rs 8.3 lakh crore.

Adani Green raises ₹1,630 crore via subsidiary

Adani Green Energy Ltd has raised 27,954 million Japanese Yen (~₹1,630 crore) through its subsidiary (Adani Solar Energy AP Six) to refinance its existing indebtedness. The project loan facility is supported by MUFG Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation with equal participation.

Tata’s Nelco seeks to offer satellite broadband services

Tata Group company Nelco has applied for the global mobile personal communication by satellite (GMPCS) licence. It has become the fourth company in India to seek the licence for launching broadband-from-space services. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sought more details from Nelco as to how it plans to provide satellite communication services in India.

L&T closes $107 million loan with SMBC

Larsen & Toubro Ltd has closed a three-year $107 million sustainability-linked loan from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). The facility incorporates interest rate reductions linked to the achievement of two of L&T’s predetermined sustainability targets– the reduction of greenhouse gas emission intensity and water consumption intensity against target levels.

Auto sales in November: Highlights

The festive season helped drive strong overall sales for most Indian automakers in November. 

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd posted a 14% year-on-year (YoY) increase in total sales to 1.59 lakh units in Nov 2022. Sales from its utility vehicle segment rose 32.5% YoY to 32,563 units. Exports fell 7.7% YoY to 19,738 units.

Tata Motors Ltd registered a 55% YoY increase in passenger vehicle sales to 46,425 units in Nov. The automaker’s commercial vehicle sales fell 10% YoY to 29,053 units. Electric passenger vehicle sales jumped 146% YoY to 4,451 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra’s passenger vehicles division posted total sales of 30,392 units in Nov, up 56% YoY. M&M’s tractor segment posted a 10% YoY increase in sales to 30,528 units.  

TVS Motor Company posted a 2% YoY increase in total sales to 2.64 lakh units. Meanwhile, Hero MotoCorp posted a 12% YoY increase in total sales to 3.91 lakh units in Nov.

Windfall profit tax on crude oil halved

The Central government on Thursday slashed the windfall profit tax on domestically produced crude oil to less than half. It also reduced the levy on diesel. The revised tax rates become effective from December 2, 2022. The tax on crude oil produced by firms such as the state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has been reduced to ₹4,900 per tonne from the existing ₹10,200 per tonne.
