The Success Story of Razorpay

The payment gateway ecosystem in India is a huge market to capitalise upon. The firms participating in this industry require a reliable system and robust mechanism of logistics and financial compliance at every stage. Today, Razorpay is one of the leading internet-based financial solution providers revolutionising the fintech space with groundbreaking innovations.

From days of justifying every payment the company made for essential items from its college seed fund to raising millions and becoming members of the coveted unicorn club, Harshil Mathur and Shashank Kumar of Razorpay have come a long way.

In today’s article, we throw light on how Razorpay has been rising up the charts to emerge as a dominant name in the Indian fintech space. 

Razorpay’s Origin 

In 2014,  Kumar and Mathur met at IIT Roorkee when the duo decided to work on a crowdfunding platform. However, they realised that online payment was a problem for small & medium-sized (SME) businesses, especially e-commerce platforms. Thus, they created Razorpay to address this issue. The idea of Razorpay was to offer a simple payment gateway platform for startups/SMEs.

The platform provides access to several online payment methods for business entities, including credit & debit cards, net banking, and UPI. They charge just 2-3% for each transaction. It also supports many leading wallets in India, including JioMoney, Mobikwik, Airtel Money, FreeCharge, OlaMoney, and PayZapp. Razorpay provides a comprehensive dashboard for handling payments for users and is applicable for both web and mobile applications.

The dashboard has various products, namely Razorpay Route, Razorpay Smart Collect, Razorpay Subscriptions, Razorpay Invoices and Razorpay Capital. These products handle tasks such as cash flows, disbursement of money, and automating electronic fund transfers. Razorpay also collects scheduled payments and supports businesses with instant loans to help them resolve cash flow issues. They also offer smart payroll software to manage and automate employee salaries.

Oyo, Cred, Facebook, Flipkart, Zomato and Swiggy, Byju’s, Zilingo, Yatra, Goibibo, and Airtel are some of Razorpay’s most prominent clients! Even marketfeed has been using its payment gateway and payroll services since 2020!

Razorpay’s Latest Funding Rounds

In October 2020, Razorpay obtained $100 million in a funding round headed by Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC and Sequoia India. With this funding, Razorpay joined the exclusive batch of unicorn startups from India. It raised $375 million in a Series F round in December 2021. In May 2022, the firm announced its fourth liquidity event for Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) for $75 million.

Ribbit Capital, Tiger Global, Y Combinator, Matrix Partners, Singapore’s GIC, and Sequoia India are the platform’s leading investors.

At $7.5 billion, Razorpay is currently India’s most valuable fintech firm!

Razorpay’s Acquisitions 

  • In 2019, Razorpay announced its first acquisition of Thirdwatch, an AI-powered company specialising in big data to reduce return-to-origin and fraud orders for e-commerce businesses.
  • It also acquired cloud-based payroll management startup Opfin in 2019. The acquisition allowed Razorpay to roll out a new HR automation product, primarily for the payroll process. It also complemented RazorpayX’s B2B banking product, which is a neo-banking platform targeted at businesses and corporates.
  • 2021 – Acquired TERA Finlabs to strengthen its B2B Credit Infrastructure.
  • 2022 – The company made an international foray and acquired leading Malaysian fintech startup Curlec to transform the payments ecosystem in Southeast Asia.
  • Purchased a stake in payments tech startup IZealiant Technologies to build industry-first solutions for banks to create a world-class payments experience for their businesses and customers. 
  • Razorpay acquired Ezetap to build a full-stack omnichannel payments solution.
  • Ventured into Loyalty and Rewards Management with the acquisition of PoshVine. The acquisition was made to enhance the offline shopping experience for customers by integrating PoshVine’s loyalty and reward offerings on its point-of-sale network. 

Peer Analysis

Razorpay faces heavy competition from PayU, Paytm, PayPal India, CCAvenue, BillDesk, Instamojo, and many more. These firms aim to increase their market share by forming multiple partnerships, investing in projects, and launching new products. The market is highly concentrated with various small and large players.

Razorpay’s Strong Growth 

  • The platform has close to 80 lakh merchants who are primarily small & medium enterprises (SMEs). This figure is expected to reach 90 crores1 crores as the industry matures.
  • With an annual payment processing volume of roughly $80 billion, the business has a solid opportunity to overtake rival PayU as the leading online payment processing platform.
  • The company clocked revenue of ₹1,484.4 crore in FY22 along with a profit (undisclosed) as per unaudited financial reports. 
  • Over the past years, Razorpay has expanded beyond digital payments. In just four years of its launch, RazorpayX and Razorpay Capital, the company’s lending arm and neo-banking division, have already contributed 30% to its total revenue.
  • With the Curlec acquisition, Razorpay is looking to expand its core payments services to markets in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, etc. 
  • As a result of its strong product and technology stack, Razorpay was also voted as The Economic Times Startup of the Year 2022.

Ratan Tata – The ‘Accidental’ Startup Investor

One of India’s most influential and successful industrialists that we respect and look up to is Ratan Tata. The stories behind his vision for the Tata Group is truly inspiring. His passion for addressing the concerns of all types of sectors is exactly what made the Tata Group so successful. Even after stepping down as the Chairman of the Group in 2012, he continues to amaze us with his intuition for doing business. Ratan Tata has turned into an angel investor for more than a dozen startups. Many people state that he has a ‘Midas Touch’. This means that any firm he invests in turns out to be very successful in their respective fields. Let us take a look at some of the prominent startups that Ratan Naval Tata has invested in.

Snapdeal

The first e-commerce company that Ratan Tata invested in was Snapdeal. In 2014, he made a personal investment in the company. Once he resigned from the chairman post at Tata Group, he saw a huge potential in the virtual or e-commerce world. He wanted to become a part of India’s digital revolution and Snapdeal was the entry point for him. During that period, he became the most high-profile individual investor in India’s highly competitive e-commerce industry.

With investors such as Tata backing them, Snapdeal was able to raise enough funds to undergo a major rebranding process in 2016. The company was able to attract more customers to its website and mobile application through special offers. Tata’s investment in the company not only helped it from losing its market share but also prevented Flipkart’s potential attempt to become a monopoly in the e-commerce segment (after the acquisition of Myntra).

UrbanLadder

The Bengaluru-based online furniture website, UrbanLadder, was launched in 2012. Two years later, they received a major investment from Ratan Tata. This was the second e-commerce venture that he invested in, after Snapdeal. An investment from a business legend such as Ratan Tata gave the company a major boost. The founders of the furniture retail firm stated that Tata, who has a degree in architecture, loved the designs of their products. 

UrbanLadder currently has 3 stores in Bengaluru and distributes its products across 75 cities in India through its website. On November 15, Reliance Retail acquired a 96% stake in the company from its existing investors such as Ratan Tata. However, Reliance was able to buy out UrbanLadder for just Rs 182 crore, which is nearly 1/6th of what it was worth in 2019.

CarDekho

In 2015, Ratan Tata invested an undisclosed amount in Jaipur-based Girnar Software and acquired shares of the company. GirnarSoft is the parent company of CarDekho.com, BikeDekho.com, and PriceDekho.com. Out of these 3, Cardekho is the most popular one. It is one of India’s leading car search ventures that helps users buy cars. The company has tie-ups with many auto manufacturers, more than 4000 car dealers, and numerous financial institutions to facilitate the purchase of vehicles.

It has been reported that Tata’s entry into CarDekho has helped it to scale up geographically. In 2019, the company also launched InsuranceDekho, which was its entry into the motor and health insurance sector. The interest shown by Ratan Tata has allowed the company to raise funds very easily for its expansion plans.

PayTM

Since its launch in 2010, PayTM has had a huge user base. This was due to its features such as multiple payment options. It was a major platform that helped in India’s shift towards digital payments. One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm, had received support from major investors such as Alibaba in 2015. During the same year, Ratan Tata understood the potential of the company and picked up a stake in One97. This was Ratan Tata’s 5th investment in an e-commerce platform. He even worked as an advisor for the firm.

After 10 years of Paytm’s launch, it has become one of the most widely used applications by Indians. It is also the country’s first payment bank. They have introduced a large number of features such as Paytm Mall, and even has a platform for trading in stocks. Paytm has become a one-stop destination for all payment and shopping needs.

Lenskart

Lenskart, the online retailer that sells eyewear, was able to secure funding from Ratan Tata in 2016. He was inducted as an advisor and mentor for the company. As we know, Lenskart sells sunglasses, eyeglasses, contact lenses, and eyewear accessories. This company was able to improve upon its sales from both online and offline modes. From various sources of funding, the company was able to launch stores in almost all cities in India. They also introduced advanced technology and special offers on its website and mobile application. Thus, they have been able to attract more customers over the years.

Cure.fit

Cure.fit is a health and wellness startup that was launched by the co-founder of Myntra, Mukesh Bansal. Ratan Tata was one of the initial investors of the firm. In 2017, after a year of its launch, the company was able to raise a total of Rs 19.2 crore from Ratan Tata’s UC-RNT Fund and many others. The UC-RNT Fund is a partnership between the University of California and RNT (Ratan Naval Tata) Associates.

Cure.fit has a chain of fitness centers (under the ‘Cult.fit’ brand), a food delivery platform called ‘Eat.fit’, a chain of healthcare clinics called ‘Care.fit’, and an online mental wellness platform called ‘Mind.fit’.

Tork Motors

As we know, electric modes of transport will become the future of commuting in India. This is exactly what Ratan Tata strongly believes as well. In 2019, he chose to invest in Mumbai-based Tork Motors. The e-bike startup had initially raised funds from Bharat Forge and Bhavish Aggarwal (the co-founder of Ola Cabs). Tata analysed the research and development (R&D) activities of the company and was impressed by the work conducted by the team. After Tata invested in Tork Motors, it has received a lot of interest from other investors and bike enthusiasts.

Tork Motors is gearing up to launch its flagship motorcycle, the T6X soon. It reportedly has a top speed of 100 km/h, and a range of 100 km on a single charge. The company has the potential to become one of the best electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers in our country.

Ola Electric

Ratan Tata was one of the first investors in Ola Cabs’ parent company, ANI Technologies Pvt Ltd. However, in 2019, he invested an undisclosed amount in Ola Electric Mobility Pvt Ltd. As mentioned above, he believes in the growth and evolution of the electric vehicle ecosystem in India. The CEO of Ola had stated that Ratan Tata has been an inspiration and a mentor for him in shaping Ola’s journey over the years.

Ola Electric has announced that they will roll out 10 lakh electric vehicles in India by 2021.

What We Can Learn from Ratan Tata

Ratan Tata, in an interview in 2019, said that he became an investor in these new-age startups “by accident”. Whether it was an accident or not, he has helped in providing a major boost to every company he has invested in. We can now see that many of the startups mentioned above have become very profitable over the years. 

His ability to analyse and select these highly interesting companies, since its very inception, is indeed commendable. He invests in those products or services that drives or excites him. He has also invested in popular discount-broker Upstox, which recently hit 2 million users. Tata always looks into how passionate a company’s founders are. He makes it a point to draw conclusions from their attitude and their seriousness towards their company. Moreover, he believes in his own business intuition. 

Despite what background we come from, Ratan Tata has an important lesson for all of us: While making any sort of investment, do remember that each point will be a learning experience. Even while selecting stocks to invest in, make sure that the company and its products excite you. Learn to build trust on your own analysis and become better stock market participants. Thus, your journey towards obtaining financial freedom will become a strong and exciting one.

India’s Billion-Dollar Startups of 2020

Before discussing unicorns from India, let us see what the term unicorn refers to. A ‘unicorn’ in the business world is any startup that reaches the valuation of $1 billion(around Rs 7,400 crores!). Getting the status of a unicorn is very special for any company. At the same time, it is no cakewalk. Each unicorn has its own story of struggles and the success which inspires other smaller startups. These unicorns expand further to establish themselves as one of the bigger companies in their sector.

Just to bring some familiarity, PayTM, OYO Rooms, BYJU’s, Ola Cabs, Swiggy, Zomato and Big Basket are all examples of companies that you may know that are unicorns. We all have been using products or services of these companies on a day-to-day basis for a while now, probably without even knowing their story. Anyway, in the very challenging year of 2020, India has seen 8 startups turning into a unicorn. Here, you will find who they are.

Razorpay

Bangalore based fintech startup, Razorpay, is a payment gateway company which allows businesses to accept, process and disburse payments. It became a Unicorn last month when it secured $100 million in Series D funding. It will use the funds to launch products for its neo-banking business Razorpay X and lending business Razorpay Capital.Many payment gateways that you see while paying for products online are enabled by Razorpay. You may have even used their services while booking a train through the IRCTC app.

The company plans to achieve overall profitability in 2-3 years, then to go public in the future, with an IPO. It became the 5th Fintech (companies that mix Finance and Technology) in Indian history to achieve ‘unicorn’ status. Paytm, BillDesk, PhonePe and PolicyBazaar are the other four fintech unicorns from India. Razorpay is funded by around 30 investors. Sequoia Capital India, GMO Venture Partners, Ribbit Capital and Tiger Global Management are some of the most prominent investors. Singapore’s sovereign fund, GIC, is among the latest backers of the company.

Pine Labs

The merchant commerce solution provider, Pine Labs, became the first company in 2020 to cross the $1 billion mark in value. This happened after New York-based financial services major, Mastercard, infused money in Pine Labs. Founded in 1998, the company focussed on large-scale, smart, card-based payment and loyalty solutions for the retail petroleum industry. You may have seen their touch-based debit/credit cards all around town, from small retail stores to your traffic police department. 

In 2009, Pine Labs ventured into the mainstream payments space to provide solutions to merchants. This was the time when they started connecting to banks and other financial services. In 2017, they entered Malaysia with an exclusive partnership with CIMB Bank. This was their first step towards the international market. Other major investors of Pine Labs are Actis Capital, Sequoia Capital, Temasek, PayPal and Sofina. 

Postman 

Postman was co-founded by Abhinav Asthana, Ankit Sobti and Abhijit Kane in 2014. In July, the Software startup raised $150 million led by US-based Insight Partners at a $2 billion valuation. 

In just six years, the company has been able to cross a valuation of $1 billion. Thus, becoming the fastest Indian software-as-a-service company to become a unicorn. Postman helps coders to test run their application programme interface (APIs) and subsequently modify them. APIs help and enable communication between different software layers, and is very important for the smooth management of modern technology. This saves their time as the coders don’t have to make separate code for testing. A lot of things online are API centric. Whether it’s communication or payments, everything requires an API and thus giving more opportunities to enable Postman’s future growth.

FirstCry

Founded by Supam Maheshwari and Amitava Saha in 2010, FirstCry entered the elite list of Unicorns in February. The company raised $296 million in Series E funding led by Softbank to cross the valuation of $1 billion. FirstCry offers a variety of baby and mother care products. It boasts to host around 6000 brands in more than 400 stores across the nation. The company signed Amitabh Bachchan as their brand ambassador to gain popularity among the Indian crowd, and you may have seen their advertisements everywhere. 

FirstCry offers products across categories which includes diapering, toys, clothes, skin and health care, and other fashion accessories. They acquired Mumbai-based e-commerce store BabyOye in 2016 to solidify their grip in the infant-care and mother-care products and services segment.

Nykaa

The beauty and lifestyle brand, Nykaa, was launched in 2012. Over the past 8 years, it has emerged as India’s largest omnichannel beauty destination. It offers products across different domains like makeup, skincare, haircare, fragrances, personal care, luxury and wellness products for women and men. During the lockdown period, Nykaa focussed on delivering beauty and lifestyle products to over 15,000 in-codes in all of India. A recent investment of Rs 66.6 crores from Steadview Capital took its value to over $1 billion. With a strong online presence, Nykaa is one brand which can have a big future in India.

Unacademy

The traditional Indian education system is in a phase of transition. EdTech or education with technology is the new normal. Online learning or e-learning and e-exams have gained more importance during the lockdown. This has increased the demand for web portals like Unacademy who depend on online mediums to teach, and are in fact changing the way our education system works. The Bengaluru-based company raised $150 million in September 2020 in a round of funding led by SoftBank valuing the ed-tech firm at $1.45 billion. 

Apart from SoftBank, Unacademy has also raised capital from existing investors General Atlantic, Sequoia Capital, Nexus Venture Partners, Facebook, and Blume Ventures. To gain more attraction this year, Unacademy became the official partner for one of the biggest sporting events of the country; IPL. With India’s adaptation to the digital world, Unacademy is expected to grow even further.

Zerodha

Probably, the one company which does not need much introduction if you keep track of the stock market. It is a perfect example of ‘bootstrapped to billions’. Unlike other companies in this list, Zerodha did not raise money to become a unicorn. In fact, it carried out an employee stock option buyback plan to reward its team, retain talent and grows into great heights. It was founded on 15th August 2010 by the two brothers, Nithin and Nikhil Kamath. Their disruptive pricing models and in-house technology have made them the biggest stockbroker in India in terms of active retail clients. Zerodha claims that over 3+ million clients place millions of orders every day. This contributes to over 15% of all Indian retail trading volumes.

Cars24

The Gurgaon-based startup is the latest and 8th entrant to the list of unicorns in 2020. Cars24 was founded in 2015. It has become India’s largest platform for buying and selling used cars. Cars24 focusses on two things. Firstly, they offer a higher price to the car sellers. Secondly, they complete the whole deal in the fastest possible time with the aid of expert assistance.

The efficient, reliable and hassle-free transacting experience helps the company to attract more customers. On 24th November, CARS24 raised a fresh $200 million in funding led by DST Global. This has taken the total investment infusion to $400 million into the Gurugram-based used car buying company. The company officials stated that the fresh capital will be used to invest in technology and product innovation. 

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced people to prefer private transportation instead of public transportation. Also, they are not comfortable to buy expensive cars at a time when things are economically unstable. Thus, purchasing used-cars is helping them to ensure their objective at a lower cost. CARS24 claims that they have already transacted over 3,000 two-wheelers in less than six months. Vikram Chopra, the co-founder of CARS24, claimed that the company’s transaction surpassed its pre-Covid volumes by more than 20%. Asia Venture Group, Apoletto, Unbound and Sequoia Capital India are the other investors of CARS24.

Conclusion

India is home to the fourth-highest number of unicorns in the world after the United States, China and the United Kingdom. But there’s one point which requires our special focus. India has more than 60 unicorns but around two-thirds of them have their headquarters outside India. What can be the reasons? Are the policies in India not favouring the start-ups to flourish? Is there a huge gap between human resource when compared India to the US or other European nations?  

Being said that, India is in desperate needs of these start-ups to grow. The bigger they become, the more the people are employed. Covid-19 has forced many people to lose their jobs. Also, the business of almost every company has been impacted. Thus, job creation has to be the priority of central/ state authorities. There’s still a month to go before the end of 2020. Can more startups join the famous ‘unicorn club’ this year?
