India’s GDP accelerates to a four-quarter high of 7.8% in Q1

According to the data from the National Statistical Office (NSO), India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) surged to a four-quarter high of 7.8% on an annual basis in the June quarter (Q1) of FY24. The growth can be attributed to central and state governments increasing capital expenditure (capex), stronger consumption demand and higher activities in the services sector. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had predicted a growth rate of 8%.

Jio Fin Services to be removed from Sensex tomorrow

S&P BSE indices (including Sensex) will remove Jio Financial Services (JFSL) from its indices with effect from tomorrow, September 1. Jio Financial Services Ltd (JFSL) is a demerged non-banking financial services (NBFC) unit of Reliance Industries Ltd. The exchanges twice extended the removal of JFSL shares from the indices after the shares hit a lower circuit for four consecutive sessions post-listing.

Viacom 18 bags TV and digital rights for Indian cricket team’s home matches

Viacom18 has won BCCI media rights for ₹67.8 crore per match, outbidding Sony Pictures Networks India and Disney Star. The total value of the deal is ₹5,966 crore. The e-auction for the bilateral cricket media rights was held on Thursday. As per the tender released by the BCCI on August 2, the board had set a base price of ₹20 crore per match for Package A, which comprises the TV rights for the Indian subcontinent.

India’s Q1 fiscal deficit widens to Rs 6.06 lakh crore

According to Govt data, India’s fiscal deficit for Q1 FY24 has soared to ₹6.06 lakh crore, a significant increase from the ₹3.41 lakh crore recorded in the same period the previous year. The deficit stood at 20.5% of the Budget Estimates (BE) in the corresponding period of the financial year 2022-23. The fiscal deficit for Q1 now stands at approximately 33.9% of the projected ₹17.87 lakh crore target for the entire fiscal year.

Kotak Mahindra adds UPI interoperability feature to its Digital Rupee app

Kotak Mahindra Bank announced the introduction of a UPI interoperability feature on its Digital Rupee (e₹) application as a part of the RBI’s CBDC pilot project. Users will now be able to scan any QR code at merchants to make payments for groceries and daily expenses. As of today, the feature is live for Android users. It will empower customers to make payments on the existing UPI QR codes available at merchants.

Tata Power RE signs pact with Sanyo Special Steel Manufacturing to set up 28-MW solar plant

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has partnered with Sanyo Special Steel Manufacturing India Pvt Ltd (SSMI) to set up a 28.12-megawatt green energy plant in Maharashtra. TPREL an arm of Tata Power. The plant is expected to produce 61.875 million units (MUs) of electricity annually, which would meet the energy requirement of the steel manufacturing unit of SSMI.

JSW Group in talks with Chinese carmaker Leapmotor for EV tech: Report

JSW Group is in early talks with Chinese automaker Leapmotor to license technology to build electric vehicles in India. Under the technology licensing agreement, JSW would use Leapmotor’s platform to manufacture EVs in India under its own brand name. JSW is likely to use a single platform on which it can build at least three mid-sized sport-utility vehicles (SUVs).

Zydus Lifesciences gets USFDA approval for acne drug

Zydus Lifesciences has received final approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) for Isotretinoin Tablets. The drug is used in the treatment of severe cystic acne. As per IQVIA MAT data for July 2023, the Isotretinoin Capsules USP had annual sales worth $165 million in the United States.

TCS extends contract with Athora Netherlands

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has expanded its long-standing partnership with Athora Netherlands (formerly VIVAT). The partnership is to help the Dutch life insurance and pension provider with a better IT operating model to enhance customer experience, operational resilience and business agility. This will be a multi-year deal for TCS. The company didn’t disclose the size or the tenure of the deal.

Adani Ports Q1 Results: Net profit rises 83% YoY to ₹2,115 crore

Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd reported an 83% YoY jump in consolidated net profit to ₹2,115 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY24). Its consolidated revenue from operations stood at ₹6,248 crore, up 24% YoY. EBITDA increased 80% YoY to ₹3,765 crore in Q1. The company recorded its highest-ever quarterly port cargo volumes at 101.4 MMT in the first quarter, reflecting a 12% YoY jump.

Tata Power to develop 2,800 MW hydro storage projects

Tata Power Ltd has entered into an agreement with the Government of Maharashtra. The agreement is for developing pumped hydro storage projects having a total capacity of 2800 MW. The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra Government proposing a total investment worth approximately ₹13,000 crore. The pumped hydro storage projects are targeted to aid not just Maharashtra but also the country’s clean energy landscape.

Coal India Q1 Results: Net profit falls 10% YoY to ₹7,941 crore

Coal India reported a 10% YoY fall in consolidated net profit to ₹7,941 crore for the June quarter (Q1 FY24). Revenue from operations rose 3% YoY to ₹35,983 crore during the same period. On a sequential basis, net profit rose 44% from ₹5,528 crore reported in the preceding March quarter, while revenue dropped 6% QoQ. EBITDA stood at ₹10,513 crore, down 14.5% YoY.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been selected as a strategic partner by the Indian Government to transform the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) into a state-of-the-art public procurement platform with enhanced transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity. The GeM platform provides an end-to-end online marketplace for central and state government bodies, including public sector undertakings, for the procurement of common-use goods and services transparently and efficiently. TCS will design and build a new modern solution leveraging new technologies while maintaining the current platform.

Hindalco Q1 Results: Net profit falls 40% YoY to ₹2,454 crore

Hindalco reported a 40.4% YoY fall in consolidated net profit to ₹2,454 crore for Q1 FY24. Its revenue from operations fell 9% YoY to ₹52,991 crore during the same period. Consolidated EBITDA stood at ₹5,714 crore, down 32% YoY. The operating profit margin contracted by 375 basis points to 10.78%.

Hero MotoCorp halts booking for India-made Harley Davidson

Hero MotoCorp Ltd halted bookings for its India-made Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The company has received 25,597 bookings for the Harley-Davidson X440 to date. The booking window, which opened on July 4, has now been closed, and the new booking window will be announced soon. Hero MotoCorp said it will start production of the Harley-Davidson X440 in September 2023 and commence customer deliveries from October onwards.

Torrent Pharma reported a 7% YoY rise in net profit to ₹378 crore for the June quarter (Q1 FY24). Net profit stood at ₹354 crore in Q1 FY23. Revenue also rose 10% YoY to ₹2,591 crore during the same period. EBITDA stood at ₹791 crore, up 11% YoY. The R&D spend rose 6% YoY to ₹129 crore in the second quarter.

Godrej Consumer to invest ₹900 crore to set up manufacturing plants

Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL) on Monday announced that its board has approved a capital expenditure of ₹900 crore. The capital expenditure is for setting up new manufacturing sites in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. This is being done to cater to the growing customer demand as well as consolidate the manufacturing footprint. GCPL’s board took the decision at a board meeting held on August 7. The company will fund the project through a mix of internal accruals and debt.

Torrent Power commissions 115 MW wind power project in Gujarat

Torrent Power Ltd has successfully commissioned a 115-megawatt (MW) capacity wind power project in Gujarat. Furthermore, the company has commissioned this wind project through its wholly-owned subsidiary Torrent Solargen Ltd. The wind power project is located in Devbhumi Dwarka district of Gujarat. Tata Motors to build electric car battery factory in UK for $5 Bn

Tata Motors will build an electric vehicle battery plant in the UK to supply its Jaguar Land Rover factories.  The company will build its first gigafactory outside of India in Britain with an investment of 4 billion pounds ($5.2 billion), thus creating up to 4,000 jobs. The factory will also produce an initial output of 40 gigawatt hours. In addition to this, the move will provide a major boost for the UK car industry in need of domestic battery production to help secure its future.

L&T Finance Holdings reported a 103% YoY increase in net profit to ₹531 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY24). The company posted a consolidated net profit of ₹262 crore in Q1 FY23. Furthermore, the company’s Net Interest Income (NII) stood at ₹1,644 crore, up 15% YoY against ₹1,433 crore in Q1 last fiscal. Global Markets Fire Up! Nifty to Follow or Fall? Pre Market Analysis

Here are some of the major updates that could move the markets (NIFTY) today:

Stocks

HCL Technologies Ltd reported a nearly 8% year-on-year (YoY) rise in consolidated net profit for the June quarter to Rs 3,534 crore.

Dr Reddy’s Labs announced that its Biologics License Application (BLA) for its proposed biosimilar rituximab candidate DRL_RI has been accepted for a substantive review by USFDA.

Technology major TCS reported a nearly 17% year-on-year (YoY) rise in consolidated net profit for the June quarter to Rs 11,074 crore.

What to Expect Today?

NIFTY opened with a gap-up at 19,508 yesterday. It was crazy price action that we saw in Nifty. The markets moved down and closed at 19,384, down by 55 points or 0.28%.

BANK NIFTY opened flat at 44,888 and exhibited range-bound volatility. The index fell finally and closed at 44,639, down by 106 points or 0.24%.

IT closed 0.71% lower.

The US markets and the European markets rallied.

The Asian markets are trading higher.

The U.S. Futures and European futures are trading higher.

GIFT NIFTY is trading 130 points higher at 19,555.

All the factors combined indicate a gap-up opening.

NIFTY has supports at 19,360, 19,320, 19,265 and 19,200. We can expect resistances at 19,435, 19,500, 19,550 and 19,600.

BANK NIFTY has supports at 44,560, 44,440 and 44,280. Resistances are at 44,720, 44,950, 45,100 and 45,370.

NIFTY has the highest call OI build-up at 19,500. The highest put OI build-up is at 19,300. 

BANK NIFTY has the highest call OI build-up at 45,000. The highest put OI build-up is at 44,500.

Foreign Institutional Investors net-sold shares worth Rs 1,200 crores. Domestic Institutional Investors net-bought shares worth 400 crores.

INDIA VIX is at 10.9.

Though the US markets closed in the green, you can see that Dow Jones had broken the day-low in the second half. The up-move was contributed by the IT stocks mainly.

HDFC merger will get completed today and there will be volatility because of inflows and outflows.

There are strong resistances and supports in the market. OI says there are strong resistances rather than supports and this means there could be proper short covering in case there is a good up-move.

The company will export the entire power generated from the project to Bangladesh through dedicated 400 kV transmission lines. The power project achieved commercial operations on June 25, 2023.

L&T Finance Holdings plans to sell its wholesale loan book to interested banks, NBFCs, and funds. The company also plans to repay or refinance its existing wholesale loan book. The move comes as the company aims to become a 100% retail finance company. As of March 31, 2023, the wholesale book of the company was 25% of the total loan book (₹19,840 crore).

Ajanta Pharma’s Dahej formulation facility received no observations from the US Food & Drugs Administration (USFDA) inspection. The formulation facility was inspected by the USFDA team between June 19-23, 2023. No Form 483 was issued to the company, meaning that there were no observations regarding the quality of the facility or the products manufactured there. In September 2022, the USFDA inspected this facility and issued two observations on that particular plant that manufactures formulations.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T)’s power transmission and distribution business has secured new orders in India and abroad. The order is worth approximately ₹1,000-2,500 crore.

Oil India, ONGC in talks for 50% stake in $3.4 bn Kenya oilfield

ONGC Videsh has partnered with Oil India Ltd (OIL) to potentially acquire a 50% stake in Tullow Oil Plc’s oilfield project in Kenya. The company has replaced Indian Oil Corp (IOC) as the partner. However, they now face competition from Chinese energy giant Sinopec, which entered the deal due to delays in finalizing the agreement on the Indian side. Retail inflation eases to 5.66% in March

Retail inflation in India eased to a 16-month low of 5.66% in March 2023 from 6.75% in March 2022 as food inflation moderated on account of falling vegetable prices. The consumer food price index (CFPI) eased to 4.79%, down from 5.95% in February 2023 and 7.68% in March 2022. Rural inflation stood at 5.51%, while urban inflation stood at 5.89%. Retail inflation in India fell marginally but remained above RBI’s 6% upper tolerance band for the second straight month in February 2023.

India’s manufacturing PMI hits a three-month high of 56.4 in March

India’s manufacturing sector expanded at its quickest pace in three months in March on improved output and new orders. The S&P Global India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 56.4 in March, compared to 55.3 in Feb. Foreign demand for Indian goods increased as well, with new export orders rising in March.

PMI is a month-on-month calculation, and a value above 50 represents an expansion compared to the previous month.

Auto sales data for March 2023: Highlights  

Maruti Suzuki India wholesale sales remained flat at 1.70 lakh units in March 2023. Sales of its mini & compact vehicle segment fell 14% YoY to 83,714 units. Exports rose 13.7% YoY to 30,119 units.

Tata Motors Ltd registered a 4% YoY increase in passenger vehicle sales to 44,225 units in March. The automaker’s commercial vehicle sales remained flat at 46,823 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra’s total passenger vehicle segment posted total sales of 35,997 units in March, an increase of 30% YoY. M&M’s tractor sales rose 18% YoY to 35,014 units. 

TVS Motor Company’s total sales stood at 3.17 lakh units in March, up 3% YoY.

Axis Bank launches business management solution for merchants

Axis Bank, in partnership with Visa, launched an app that will empower merchants to accept payments through various digital modes and enable them to manage their day-to-day business digitally. The app (Digital Dukaan) has been specifically designed to address business requirements such as accepting digital payments, inventory management and billing.

NTPC and NHPC to merge

The Indian government is considering selling NTPC Ltd’s two hydropower firms to NHPC Ltd to create a single hydropower company. This move will improve efficiency, cut costs, and help meet high demand at night when solar projects do not run. NTPC acquired the projects (THDC India Ltd and NEEPCO) three years ago for about $1.34 billion under a consolidation plan by the Indian government.

SAIL produces record 18.28 MT crude steel in FY23

Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has reported a 5.3% year-on-year rise in crude steel production to a record 18.28 million tonnes (MT) in the financial year 2022-23, with hot metal production up 3.6% YoY to 19.40 MT. SAIL, the country’s largest steel producer, has been focusing on value-added and special-steel production. It has five integrated and three special steel plants across India.

SpiceJet hives off cargo and logistics business into separate entity

SpiceJet Ltd has separated its cargo and logistics business, SpiceXpress, into a separate entity named SpiceXpress and Logistics Pvt Ltd. The move has resulted in a one-time gain of Rs 2,555.77 crore for SpiceJet. The separation also enables SpiceXpress to raise funds independently. SpiceXpress, which reported a net profit of Rs 51.4 crore for the April-December period of FY23, is expected to attract more investments and partnerships to further grow its business.

Yulu and Zomato announce tie-up for last-mile deliveries

Yulu, a shared electric Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform, has partnered with food delivery platform Zomato to use Yulu DeX EVs for intra-city deliveries. Yulu will provide about 25,000-35,000 Yulu DeX to delivery partners onboarded on Zomato’s platform for last-mile deliveries on custom-made rental plans. Once deployed, these Yulu DeX have the potential of serving 3 lakh green deliveries every day by 2026.

TCS secures contract from Norwegian rail network operator Bane NOR

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has won a contract from Bane NOR to enable secure access to its digital systems. As TCS’ strategic partner, the company will provide identity governance and administration, access management, identity lifecycle management, and application management operations in a managed services model. Bane NOR is the government agency responsible for maintaining and developing the Norwegian railway network.

Tejas Networks bags record order from BSNL

Tejas Networks has received an advance purchase order worth Rs 696 crore from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to upgrade its pan-India IP-MPLS-based Access and Aggregation Network (MAAN). The company will supply, install, and commission over 13,000 of its TJ1400 series of next-generation routers for a converged multi-service packet network being rolled out nationwide.

Oil prices surge 8% after OPEC+ announces surprise output cut

Oil prices surged nearly 8% today morning, with Brent Crude making a high of $86.44 after Saudi Arabia and OPEC+ announced a surprise cut in production of around 1.16 million barrels per day. West Texas Intermediate or WTI Crude prices also surged up to 7.5% to $81.58 per barrel. The cuts will begin in May and go on till the end of the year.
