SBI to raise Rs 50,000 crore via debt instruments in FY24

State Bank of India’s (SBI) board said it plans to raise up to Rs 50,000 crore this financial year (FY24) by issuing debt instruments. The instruments could be long-term bonds, Basel-III compliant additional tier-1 bonds, or Basel-III compliant tier-2 bonds. The move is part of the bank’s plans to meet the overall demand for credit. 

Demand for bank loans has consistently stayed in double digits despite a 250-basis points increase in interest rates since May 2022.

Tata Motors partners with HSBC India for EV financing solutions

Tata Motors has partnered with HSBC India to provide loans to corporate sector employees for buying electric vehicles (EVs). The deal offers customers with a salaried account with HSBC India a bespoke loan solution to buy from Tata’s EV portfolio. People who avail this loan will get a special accessory kit for the EV they purchase and other advantages like low processing fees, zero depositions, no hypothecation, and no documentation fees.

Allcargo Logistics closes 30% stake purchase from KWE in Gati subsidiary

Allcargo Logistics has successfully acquired a 30% stake (~1.50 lakh shares) in Gati-Kintetsu Express (GKEPL) for Rs 406.71 crore. The company’s subsidiary (Gati) already held a 70% stake in GKEPL. With this acquisition, Allcargo and Gati now own 100% of GKEPL and assume complete control. The completion of this transaction aligns with the Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) signed between the parties in March 2023.

Indoco Remedies gets EU-GMP certification for Himachal plant

Indoco Remedies has received the EU GMP certification for its manufacturing site in Himachal Pradesh. The health authority of Germany inspected the facility for oral dosage forms from May 22-25, 2023. The certification confirms compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice requirements. This EU certification will facilitate the supply of drug products registered in Europe from this manufacturing site, enhancing Indoco Remedies’ presence in the European market.

India’s forex reserves up $5.9 billion to $595.1 billion 

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that India’s foreign exchange reserves rose by $5.9 billion to reach $595.06 billion for the week ending June 2. This marked the largest increase in a month, breaking a two-week declining trend. India’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) decreased by $6 million to $18.186 billion, while the reserve position with the IMF grew by $10 million to $5.123 billion.

Zydus Lifesciences has initiated a Phase IV real-world data registry trial to evaluate the advantages of Saroglitazar Magnesium in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and comorbidities. The trial aims to enroll approx 1,500 male and female NAFLD patients with comorbidities such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, or metabolic syndrome. The study will span approximately 56 weeks.

The project consists of a combination of 379 MW solar and 587 MW wind power capacities. Tata Steel aims to meet a significant portion of its green energy requirements through this project. This leads to a reduction of 23.9 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

India’s coal production up 8.5% to 73 MT in April

According to the Ministry of Coal, India’s coal production increased by 8.5% to 73.14 million tonnes (MT) in April 2023, compared to 67.20 MT in April 2022. Larsen and Toubro’s (L&T) Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business has secured significant orders in India and overseas. L&T has won a power supply system order for the second phase of Chennai Metro and an order to supply, construct, test and commission a 132kV substation in the United Arab Emirates. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd has launched its ophthalmology treatment CEQUA in the Indian market to treat Dry Eye Disease (DED). Serum Life Sciences will make an additional equity investment of $150 million in Biocon Biologics (BBL), a subsidiary of Biocon. It had invested $150 million in Biocon Biologics in November 2022, and this additional investment will be made through the conversion of the $150 million loan provided to Biocon Pharma into equity in BBL. The total aggregate equity investment of SILS in BBL will now amount to $300 million.

The bank’s net non-performing assets (NPA) ratio fell to 0.59% from 0.64% in Q4 FY22.  Its loan book grew 21% YoY to Rs 2.89 lakh crore. NMDC plans to increase iron ore output by more than 21% in FY23

NMDC plans to increase iron ore production to 50 million tonnes in the current financial year (FY24), up 21% from last year. The company’s output in Q4 FY23 was its highest for a quarter, and it expects uniform production for FY24 (except for the September quarter due to monsoon rains). NMDC has iron ore mines in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka and is exploring lithium reserves in Australia, where it holds a majority stake in a mine.

Tata Steel commences trial use of hydrogen gas in blast furnace at Jamshedpur plant

Tata Steel has begun trial injection of hydrogen gas in one of the six blast furnaces at its Jamshedpur plant in Jharkhand. The trial will continue for 4-5 days and will provide insights into operating blast furnaces with greener fuel injectants, reducing fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The trial has the potential to reduce coke rate by 10%, resulting in a 7-10% reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne of crude steel produced.

Adani Ports starts $130 million buyback of bonds to prepay near-term debt

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) is set to buy outstanding 3.375% senior notes due 2024 for $130 million in cash. The purchase will be funded through cash reserves available with the company. The move is aimed at partly prepaying the company’s near-term debt maturities and to convey its comfortable liquidity position. After the completion of this tender offer, the outstanding notes are expected to remain at $520 million.

Bank of Maharashtra Q4 Results: Net profit jumps 135% YoY to Rs 840 crore

Bank of Maharashtra announced a 135% YoY jump in net profit to Rs 840 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4 FY23). Its Net Interest Income (NII) increased by over 35% YoY to Rs 2,187 crore during the same period. The bank’s net non-performing assets (NNPA) declined to 0.25%, compared to 0.47% in the same quarter last year. The bank’s board recommended a dividend of Rs 1.3 per share.

Zydus Lifesciences has obtained final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for Icosapent Ethyl capsules for the treatment of heart diseases. These tablets are used to reduce fat (triglyceride) levels in the blood in adult patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia. According to IQVIA data, the annual sales of Icosapent Ethyl Capsules in the United States were $1,316 million for the 12 months ended February 2023.

Bharti Airtel has partnered with Secure Meters to deploy narrow band (NB-IoT) powered smart meters in Bihar, India. Under the partnership, Airtel will deploy NB-IoT services to power 1.3 million homes via a smart meter solution. The deployment is said to be India’s first NB-IoT solution on a narrow band with a fall-back option that will work on 2G and 4G. It will also ensure real-time connectivity and uninterrupted transfer of critical data.

HDFC Bank has received approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to acquire 20% or more stake in HDFC’s Investments-subsidiary, Griha Pte. Limited. Griha Pte is a foreign step-down subsidiary of HDFC Limited. The scheme was approved by the HDFC board and received no objection or approval letters from various Indian authorities, including the RBI, SEBI, CCI, and NCLT.

State Bank of India (SBI) may look to lower its stake in Yes Bank after a lock-in period ends on March 6. SBI, which initially acquired 49% of Yes Bank, now holds a 26.14% stake as of Dec. 31. The state-owned bank is still the largest single shareholder in the Yes Bank. SBI cannot reduce its holding below 26% before the completion of three years from the date of the infusion of capital, as per the reconstruction plan.

Power consumption up 9% to 118 BU in February

Power consumption in India rose 9% YoY to 117.84 billion units (BU) in February 2023. The peak power demand met (or the highest supply in a day) rose to 209.66 gigawatts (GW) in Feb. The peak power supply stood at 193.58 GW in February 2022 and 187.97 GW in February 2021. The robust growth of power consumption indicates sustained momentum of economic activities last month.

Reliance, Tata bid for India’s $2.4 billion solar incentives

Solar module makers, including Reliance Industries Ltd. and Tata Power, are among the bidders for $2.4 billion in financial incentives that India is offering to expand domestic manufacturing and curb panel imports from dominant producer China. PVR-Inox draws up Rs 850-crore expansion plan

PVR-Inox is expected to spend ₹800-850 crore for adding new movie screens and retrofitting the existing ones. Nearly ₹700 crore will go towards the expansion of new screens and the rest for retrofitting screens. In the next two years, the merged entity plans to add 200 screens per year. A consortium of Russia’s JSC Metrowagonmash and Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) has emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) to manufacture, supply, and maintain 200 sleeper Vande Bharat trains. These newly-designed trains will allow the movement of new locomotives on longer routes. The consortium has bid to supply 16 sleeper car trains at a basic rate of ₹120 crore per rake.

India’s gross domestic product (GDP) for the October-December quarter (Q3 FY23) slowed down to 4.4%. The GDP had moderated to 6.3% in Q2 from 13.5% in Q1. GDP at Constant (2011-12) prices in Q3 2022-23 is estimated at ₹40.19 lakh crore in Q3, as against ₹38.51 lakh crore in Q3 2021-22. The Indian economy is expected to grow at 7% in FY23.

State Bank of India has concluded a landmark $1 billion (~₹8,200 crore) syndicated social loan, making it the largest Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) loan raised by a commercial bank in the Asia Pacific market. Retail inflation eases to 5.72% in December

India’s retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), eased to a one-year low of 5.72% in December 2022. CPI stood at 5.88% in November and 6.77% in October 2022. Food inflation came in at 4.19% in December, compared to 4.67% in Nov. Inflation in the fuel & light segment was 10.97% last month.

Factory output, measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), rose to a five-month high of 7.1% in Nov 2022. IIP had contracted (-)4% in Oct.

Infosys Ltd reported a 13.4% year-on-year (YoY) increase in consolidated net profit to ₹6,586 crore for the quarter ended December (Q3 FY23). The IT company’s revenue from operations rose 20.2% YoY to ₹38,318 crore during the same period. It won deals worth $3.3 billion in Q3, the strongest in the last eight quarters. Coal India subsidiary NCL to start M-Sand production

Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, will soon start production of M-Sand, a material used for construction works. NCL will start production of M-Sand or Manufactured Sand for its Amlohri project in Madhya Pradesh.

In other news, CIL has issued Letters of Acceptance for nine coal mining projects to be operationalised through the engagement of mine developers and operators. These 9 projects have a production capacity of around 127 million tonnes (MT).

NTPC produces 14.55 MT coal from captive mines in April-December

State-owned NTPC’s coal production increased 51% year-on-year (YoY) from its captive mines to 14.55 million tonnes (MT) in April-December 2022. Its four operational coal mines have contributed to accomplishing the highest-ever monthly coal production of 22.83 lakh tonnes in December 2022. In the third quarter (Q3 FY23), NTPC produced 5.79 MT of coal and dispatched 5.42 MT to its power plants.

Shriram Finance secures $100 million loan from Asian Development Bank

Shriram Finance Ltd said it had secured a five-year loan worth $100 million (~₹826.74 crore) from Asian Development Bank to provide credit to its customers towards the purchase of new and used vehicles across India. The company also raised $250 million from US Development Finance Corporation and $475 million through a 144A Bond from the international market earlier this year. The lender is a merged entity of Shriram City Union Finance and Shriram Transport Finance.

Kalpataru Power secures order worth ₹1,247 crore

Kalpataru Power Transmission Ltd (KPTL) & its international subsidiaries have secured new orders worth ₹1,247 crore. The orders are for the Indian and overseas markets in the transmission & distribution (T&D) business. KPTL’s order inflows in FY23 have crossed ₹17,031 crore on a consolidated basis. They are currently executing projects in over 30 countries and have global footprints in 67 countries.

Coal sector constructs 8 eco-parks to promote mine tourism

The Central govt. has constructed eight eco-parks in different parts of India to boost mine tourism. Two more parks will be completed in the ongoing financial year (FY23). In line with the sustainable development and green initiatives, coal/lignite public sector enterprises (PSUs) have planted around 47 lakh saplings on 2300 hectares of land from January to November this year.

Adani Group acquires NDTV founders’ 27.26% equity stake

Adani Group has acquired a 27.26% equity stake in NDTV from Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy (founders of the news broadcaster). Vishvapradhan Commercial Pvt. Ltd (an indirect subsidiary of Adani Enterprises) holds an 8.27% equity stake in NDTV, and RRPR (another indirect subsidiary) held a 29.18% equity stake in NDTV. After this recent acquisition, RRPR will hold 56.45% of NDTV.

Zydus Lifesciences gets final USFDA approval for insomnia drug

Zydus Lifesciences Ltd has received final approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) to market its generic version of Triazolam tablets. The drug is used on a short-term basis to treat insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep). The product will be manufactured at the Zydus Lifesciences’ formulation facility at Moraiya, Ahmedabad. As per IQVIA MAT data, Triazolam tablets had annual sales of $11.7 million in the US for the 12 months ended Sept 2022.

Religare Finvest signs settlement agreement with all its lenders for OTS

Debt-ridden Religare Finvest Ltd (RFL) has signed an agreement with all its lenders for a one-time settlement (OTS). This move will allow the company to exit from the Corrective Action Plan imposed by the RBI. RFL, an NBFC subsidiary of Religare Enterprises Ltd, owed about ₹5,300 crore to a consortium of lenders led by the State Bank of India (SBI). It has been in financial distress due to the alleged misappropriation of funds by promoters Shivinder Singh and his brother Malvinder Singh.

Electric vehicle sales on track to cross 10 lakh milestone this year

Retail sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in India are estimated to top the 10 lakh mark in the calendar year 2022, accounting for about 4.7% of the total automobile sales. According to data on the government’s Vahan website, nearly 9,89,000 EVs have been registered with regional transport offices till Thursday. EV fleet operators and individuals buying two-wheelers have been the main drivers of this growth.

Fiscal deficit touches 59% of full-year target in November

India’s fiscal deficit for the first eight months of this financial year (April-November of FY23) stood at ₹9.78 lakh crore or 58.9% of annual estimates. Total receipts stood at ₹14.65 lakh crore, while overall expenditure from April to November was at ₹24.43 lakh crore. They were 64.1% and 61.9%, respectively, of this fiscal year’s budget target. [Fiscal deficit is the difference between total revenue and total expenditure of the government.]

Hero MotoCorp commences deliveries of VIDA V1 electric scooter

Hero MotoCorp has commenced customer deliveries of its first electric scooter— VIDA V1. The first electric vehicle of the brand was delivered in Bengaluru. The electric scooter has a range of 163 km on a single charge with a top speed of 80 km/hr. It is available in two variants— VIDA V1 Plus at Rs 1,35,705 and VIDA V1 Pro at Rs 1,46,880 (effective on-road price Delhi).
