Reliance Industries (RIL) reported an 11% YoY fall in consolidated net profit to ₹16,011 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY24). Its consolidated revenue also fell 5.3% YoY to ₹2.11 lakh crore during the same period. However, its EBITDA rose 0.25 % to ₹38,093 crore compared to Q1 FY 23. EBITDA stood at ₹37,997 crore in Q1 FY23. The board has recommended a dividend of ₹9 per equity share.

Ramkrishna Forgings to acquire Multitech Auto for Rs 212 crore

Ramkrishna Forgings is set to acquire 100% ownership of Multitech Auto Pvt. Ltd along with its wholly-owned subsidiary Mal Metalliks Pvt. Ltd. The deal is valued at ₹212 crore. The acquisition process is anticipated to conclude within the next six months, subject to obtaining approval from the Adityapur Industrial Area Authority. This strategic acquisition is aimed at facilitating the expansion and growth of Ramkrishna Forgings’ business operations.

JSW Steel reported a 179% YoY increase in consolidated net profit to ₹2,338 crore for the June quarter (Q1 FY24). The company’s operating revenue for the quarter rose 10.8% YoY to ₹42,213 crore. Additionally, its EBITDA stood at ₹7,046 crore in Q1, up 63.5% YoY.

Jayaswal Neco Industries is in talks with special situations and private credit funds to refinance a debt of ₹3,200 crore. This high-yield loan is likely to be priced at 18-20%, which will be 600 basis points lower than the current borrowing rate. The company is in talks with funds including Kotak Special Situations Fund and Edelweiss Special Situations Funds.

Lupin’s German subsidiary Hormosan Pharma GmbH introduced Luforbec in the European nation. With a significant portion of the population (5% of adults and 10% of children) currently undergoing asthma treatment, Luforbec aims to provide comprehensive support to patients and healthcare professionals.

UltraTech Cement reported a 7% YoY rise in consolidated net profit to ₹1,688 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY24). Its revenue from operations rose 17% YoY to ₹17,737 crore during the same period. However, its EBITDA fell 1.5% to ₹3,049 crore compared to Q1 FY 23.

DLF to develop a residential project in Mumbai, ties up with Trident Realty

DLF will enter the Mumbai property market with a project in Andheri West. The company will develop around 2.5 million sq ft in the first phase of the project. DLF will allot 9800 equity shares (₹10 face value) at par to Trident Buildtech Pvt Ltd through its subsidiary Pegeen Builders $ Developers Pvt Ltd. Trident realty is already executing projects in Delhi-NCR and Panchkula.

ICICI Securities Q1 Results: Net profit falls 1% YoY to ₹271 crore

ICICI Securities reported a 1% YoY fall in net profit to ₹271 crore for the quarter ended June (Q1 FY24). However, the company’s total revenue rose 18% YoY to ₹934 crore, compared to ₹795 crore in Q1 FY23. The decline in the profit could be attributed to higher expenses, as its total expenses shot up by 33% to ₹570 crore in Q1.

SJVN inks initial pact with REC to secure Rs 50,000 crore for projects

SJVN Ltd has inked an initial pact with REC Ltd for securing finance of ₹50,000 crore for projects of its subsidiaries and joint ventures. REC will provide financial assistance to set up new power-generating stations based on conventional and renewable sources of energy. Furthermore, REC will assist financially in setting up new technology projects like battery storage, E-vehicles, green hydrogen/ammonia, hydrogen cells storage and manufacturing units for green projects.

Union Bank to sell 8 NAP accounts worth Rs 3,000 cr to NARCL

Union Bank of India has identified eight troubled accounts worth ₹3,000 crore to be sold to the national bad bank NARCL this fiscal. The bank has more than doubled its net income at ₹3,236 crore in the June 2023 quarter on improved asset quality and recoveries. Union Bank had already sold three accounts worth ₹900 crore last fiscal to the national bad bank at a recovery of 33%.

Power Finance Corporation to lend Rs 2.37 lakh crore to 20 clean energy projects

Power Finance Corporation (PFC) has entered into loan agreements worth more than ₹2.37 lakh crore with 20 companies. These firms include Adani Group, Greenco, ReNew Power, Continuum, Avaada, JBM Auto, Rajasthan Renewable Energy and Megha Engineering & Infrastructure, among others. These agreements are part of the company’s plan to position itself as the focal funding agency for the energy transition.

PFC is looking to fund projects like offshore wind, pumped hydro storage, solar modules and cells, among others in the clean energy space.

India’s GDP grows 6.1% in Q4

India’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew at 6.1% in the last quarter of the previous financial year (Q4 FY23)— beating street estimates. In FY23, the economy grew at 13.1%, 6.2% and 4.5% in Q1, Q2 and Q3, respectively, on an annual basis. However, economists warned that the global slowdown and volatility in financial markets pose a risk to exports and the growth outlook in coming quarters.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has come out with a draft bill for putting in place a simplified approach to regulations pertaining to the aviation sector. The Draft Aircraft Bill, 2023, has been prepared after reviewing the existing Aircraft Act of 1934. It aims for better provisions for regulation and control of the design, manufacture, possession, use, operation, sale, import and export of aircraft.

PTC India has signed two agreements for the purchase of 215 megawatts (MW) of electricity on a long-term basis. While an agreement has been signed with Brookfield Renewables for purchase of 100 MW solar power, another pact is with V S Lignite for purchase of 115 MW thermal power. PTC India will market the power to various utilities and industrial consumers.

Centre to offload stake in Coal India via OFS on June 1: Report

According to a CNBC-TV18 report, the Central Government will sell a stake in Coal India Ltd (CIL) through an offer for sale (OFS) on the BSE and NSE on Thursday (June 1). The size of OFS is likely to be around Rs 4,000 crore. The floor price has been fixed at Rs 225 a share, at a discount of nearly 7% as compared to Wednesday’s closing price of Rs 241.2.

Dixon Tech has partnered with Xiaomi India for manufacturing and exporting mobile phones from India. The company is also looking to enhance the component ecosystem in India through its wholly-owned subsidiaries. Prestige Estates recorded a 19% year-on-year (YoY) increase in total sales to Rs 3,888 crore in Q4, while collections rose 12% to Rs 2,763 crore. The real estate firm has exceeded its target of Rs 12,000 crore in pre-sales in FY23 and is expecting 20 to 25% growth in pre-sales in FY24.

Nykaa reported a 71.8% YoY decline in net profit of Rs 2.4 crore for the quarter ended March (Q4 FY23). However, its consolidated revenue rose 33.75% YoY to Rs 1,301 crore during the same quarter. Total tax expense of Rs 4.35 crore during the quarter severely impacted the revenue. EBITDA stood at Rs 70.6 crore, down 84% YoY.

FDI into India falls 16% in FY23

Gross foreign direct investment (FDI) into India has seen a 16% fall in FY23. FDI Inflows stood at $71 billion in FY23, compared to $84.8 billion in FY22. This is the first time India has seen inflows decline in the last 10 years. The drop comes off the back of a very high base in FY22 (nearly $85 billion).

The company is seeking funds amid concerns over its debt load, especially with rising interest rates. This loan comes just before Vedanta Resources Ltd. faces a $500 million bond repayment. The group requires cash after facing obstacles in selling a zinc mining unit to Hindustan Zinc Ltd.

Adani Green to seek board approval to raise up to $1 billion

Adani Green Energy plans to seek board approval to raise between ₹6,150 crore ($750 million) and ₹8,200 crore ($1 billion) through the qualified institutional placement (QIP) route. Oil Ministry working on proposal to merge MRPL with HPCL

The oil ministry is preparing a proposal to merge Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) with Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL). HPCL and MRPL are both subsidiaries of Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC). The ministry is now pushing for a share-swap deal between HPCL and MRPL, with HPCL issuing fresh shares to MRPL shareholders. The transaction will increase ONGC’s stake in HPCL, reducing the free float.

Suzlon Energy wins 300 MW wind energy project from Torrent Power

Suzlon Energy has secured a substantial order from Torrent Power for a 300 MW wind power project. India’s coal production up 8.5% to 73 MT in April

According to the Ministry of Coal, India’s coal production increased by 8.5% to 73.14 million tonnes (MT) in April 2023, compared to 67.20 MT in April 2022. GAIL shuts Ratnagiri LNG terminal till September, cuts imports

GAIL (India) Ltd has temporarily halted LNG imports at its Ratnagiri plant in Maharashtra since mid-May. SpiceJet’s subsidiary, SpiceXpress and Logistics, will receive a $100 million investment from a UK-based group, SRAM & MRAM Group. NTPC Ltd is set to conduct a feasibility study for a 130-MW floating solar power plant on Dumbur Lake in Tripura’s Gomati district. The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NTPC to conduct the feasibility study. The study will assess the required waterbody area, identify transfer stations, and obtain forest clearance. The study is estimated to cost Rs 450 crore and is expected to be completed in a few months.

ONGC arm raises $500m in foreign currency loan

ONGC’s overseas subsidiary ONGC Videsh has secured a $500 million foreign currency loan from a consortium of banks including DBS, Bank of Baroda, and State Bank of India. The syndicated loan has a tenure of five years, is denominated in dollars, and is supported by ONGC’s guarantee. The funds raised through the loan will be used to repay $500 million in bonds that recently matured.

India’s retail inflation falls to 4.7%

India’s retail inflation, measured by the consumer price index (CPI), fell to 4.70% in April, which is below the Reserve Bank of India’s upper limit of 6%. This was due to a decline in food prices. The country’s headline inflation has remained within the RBI’s target range for two consecutive months. The consumer food price index also declined from 4.79% in March to 3.84% in April.

Tata Power subsidiary TP Saurya to set up 200 Megawatt solar project in Rajasthan

TP Saurya Ltd. (TPSL) has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Tata Power Trading Company Ltd. (TPTCL) to set up a 200 MW solar power plant in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The solar plant is scheduled to be commissioned in March 202 and will supply 485 million units of energy annually, connected to the Central Transmission Utility Bus. The PPA will be valid for 25 years.

Foreign exchange reserves jump by $7.2 bn to $595.98 billion

India’s foreign exchange reserves rose by $7.196 billion to $595.976 billion in the week ending May 5. The previous reporting week had seen a decline of $4.532 billion to $588.78 billion. Foreign currency assets increased by $6.536 billion to $526.021 billion, while gold reserves rose by $659 million to $46.315 billion.

Tata Steel Mining signs pact to get LNG for Odisha plant from BPCL

Tata Steel Mining Ltd (TSML) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) to ensure a long-term supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for its ferroalloys plant in Jajpur, Odisha. Ambuja Cements places order for capacity expansion

Ambuja Cements plans to expand its clinker capacity by 8 million tonnes at its Bhatapara and Maratha units. The projects are expected to be completed in approx 24 months and will be funded through internal accruals. This expansion is part of Ambuja Cement’s strategy to double its production capacity over the next five years, aiming to increase it from the current capacity of 67.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

Automobile sales grow in double digits in April: SIAM

According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), 3,31,278 passenger vehicles were dispatched from factories to dealerships in April, up 12.9% from 293,303 units sold in April 2022. Sales of three-wheelers more than doubled to 42,885 units, while two-wheeler sales rose by 15.1% to 1,338,588 units in April.

Industrial production growth declines to 1.1% in March

The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) in India grew by 1.1% in March. This is a slowdown from the 5.6% growth observed in February. For FY23, the IIP increased by 5.1%, a significant decline compared to the 11.4% growth in the previous year. In March 2023, the manufacturing sector’s output saw a modest growth of 0.5%, while mining output rose by 6.8%. However, power output declined by 1.6% in the same month.

Indirect taxes department to soon adjudicate MRF, Bombay Dyeing, and Vedanta for evasion on imports

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is reportedly planning to adjudicate show-cause notices issued to importers for Integrated GST (IGST) evasion. The affected importers include Bombay Dyeing, BALCO, Vedanta, JSW Steel, and MRF. In addition, the CBIC has ordered Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) field formations to begin adjudication in cases of misuse of pre-import and physical export conditions.

India’s coal imports increased by 30% YoY to 162.46 million tonnes (MT) in the 2022-23 financial year. The import of coking coal rose 5.44% YoY to 54.46 MT in FY23. Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (ZEEL) is in settlement talks with its creditors to pay off debts and complete its merger with the Sony Group. Creditors had been approaching the bankruptcy court seeking repayments, but ZEEL has already repaid one creditor, IndusInd Bank Ltd., and the lender will now withdraw its objections against the merger. The merger will create a $10 billion media company with the largest viewership and pricing power in India.

Fortis acquires Gurugram-based Medeor Hospital for Rs 225 crore

Fortis Healthcare will acquire Medeor Hospital in Manesar, Gurugram, from VPS Group for Rs 225 crore. The acquisition will be funded through a mix of debt and internal accruals and is expected to close by end of July 2023. The hospital has a potential bed capacity of 350 beds and can be operationalized in a phased manner within nine months. This will be Fortis’ largest acquisition following its controlling stake acquisition by Malaysia-based IHH Healthcare.

ICICI Securities reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 263 crore for Q4 2023, a 23% YoY decline. Revenue from operations also fell from Rs 892 crore in Q4 FY22 to Rs 885 crore in Q4 FY23.  However, income from interest for the quarter rose 35% YoY to Rs 287 crore. IndusInd Bank signs $100 million loan deal with JBIC to aid Japanese OEMs in India

IndusInd Bank has signed a long-term loan agreement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to provide credit facilities to companies in the supply chain of Japanese origin equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in India. The funds raised will be used to provide need-based credit facilities to upstream and downstream companies of Japanese construction equipment firms in India, including component suppliers, dealers, and final buyers of the machinery. Zydus Lifesciences has received final approval from the USFDA to manufacture and market generic Roflumilast Tablets used to reduce inflammation in the lungs that leads to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Shakti Pumps has received a pending USD 1 million from EXIM Bank on behalf of the Government of Uganda for a project aimed at providing safe and sustainable water supply to half a million people in 20 rural districts. The project involves the supply of a solar-powered water pumping system, for which Shakti Pumps was awarded a contract worth USD 35.30 million in March 2021 by the Ministry of Water and Environment of the Ugandan government.

HDFC Bank records loan growth of 17% at end of March

HDFC Bank reported a 16.9% increase in credit growth at Rs 16 lakh crore at the end of the March quarter. The bank’s outstanding credit was Rs 13.6 lakh crore at the end of March 31, 2022. Vedanta produces record aluminium, high refined metal in FY23

Vedanta Ltd’s aluminium production reached its highest-ever level of 22.91 lakh tonnes in 2022-23, up slightly from 22.68 lakh tonnes in FY22. Meanwhile, its high refined metal production increased by 7% to 10.32 lakh tonnes in FY23. Adani Group JV in talks for first offshore loan since Hindenburg

An Adani Group joint venture (JV) with EdgeConneX is in talks with several banks for a loan of about $220 million. This would be the group’s first offshore borrowing since it was targeted by short-seller Hindenburg Research. The loan would be used by data center provider AdaniConneX Private Ltd. for capital expenditure. The loan may be signed in the coming weeks.

Bank of Baroda stops clearing payment for above-cap Russian oil: Report

As per an Economic Times report, Bank of Baroda has stopped clearing payments for Russian oil sold above the $60 per barrel price cap set by the West, which could accelerate the shift to a rupee trade mechanism. Some Indian refiners have been paying in United Arab Emirates dirham currency for Russian low-sulphur crude priced above the $60 a barrel cap using Bank of Baroda.

India’s GDP growth to slow down to 6.3 % in FY24: World Bank

The World Bank has revised its forecast for India’s GDP growth in FY24 to 6.3 %, down from its earlier forecast of 6.6 % in December 2022. The slower consumption growth and challenging external conditions are expected to constrain India’s GDP growth. The Indian government’s consumption is also projected to grow slower due to the withdrawal of pandemic-related fiscal support measures. 

The World Bank’s latest India Development Update notes that the Indian economy continues to show strong resilience to external shocks.

India cuts windfall tax on crude production to nil

The Indian govt has cut all windfall tax on crude oil from 3,500 rupees ($42.56) per tonne effective from Tuesday. The windfall tax on diesel was cut to Rs 0.50 per litre from Rs 1 previously. As of April 4, only diesel carries a windfall tax while crude. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) and petrol will not attract any such levies.

ZEEL, IndusInd Bank settle dispute over dues

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) and IndusInd Bank have informed the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) that the two companies have reached a settlement in relation to their payment dispute. IndusInd Bank said it would also withdraw its objection to ZEEL’s merger with a local unit of Japan’s Sony. In its plea, IndusInd Bank had claimed a default of Rs 83.08 crore against the media and entertainment firm

Tata Power proposes new 400 KV transmission corridor for Mumbai

Tata Power has shared a proposal to set up a high voltage 400 KV line corridor for Mumbai with the state government and the state regulatory authority. This new transmission corridor will help meet the city’s growing electricity demand and enhance electricity distribution to as high as 15,000MW in future. If approved, this project could take four-five years and may cost around Rs 1,000 crore.

In other news, Tata Power Solar Systems has secured an order worth ₹1,755 crore from NLC India to set up a 300 MW Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) based EPC project.

HFCL bags Rs 283 crore order from Gujarat Metro

HFCL has secured a Rs 282.61 crore contract from Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation to deploy communication systems for Surat Metro Rail Project Phase-1. The company has to deploy the project within 90 days from the date of contract. HFCL has to provide warranty support for 110 weeks for the system that it will deploy.

Granules India gets USFDA approval for generic gabapentin tablets

Granules India Ltd has received approval from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) for its generic gabapentin tablets. The drug is used to manage postherpetic neuralgia (a painful condition that affects the nerve fibers and skin) in adults. It is also used as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial-onset seizures. As per IQVIA data, Gabapentin tablets had sales of approx. $145 million in the US for the 12 months ended Jan 2023.

Govt launches 7th round of coal mine auctions

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the seventh round of auctions for the commercial mining of 106 coal blocks. 95 non-coking coal mines, 10 lignite mines, and one coking coal mine are being offered in the latest round of auction. The auction will be held online through a transparent two-stage process on the basis of percentage revenue share.

New Delhi-based server maker Netweb Technologies has filed a Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with market regulator SEBI for an initial public offering (IPO). The company intends to raise Rs 257 crore through a fresh issue of shares. Promoters are also looking to sell about 85 lakh shares. Netweb Tech also provides private cloud, hyper-converged infrastructure, and AI enterprise workstation services.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd crossed the 25 lakh units milestone of cumulative exports since starting overseas shipments in 1986-87. The automaker currently exports to nearly 100 countries, including markets in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. Vedanta, HZL declare dividends 3 times their combined profitability

Vedanta Ltd. and Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (HZL) have together declared dividends worth Rs 69,300 crore for the current financial year (FY23). The dividend announcements have come as the mining major looks to shore up funds to reduce its debt commitments. The dividend declared so far is nearly three times their combined profitability. A sum of the trailing 12-month profitability of Vedanta and HZL comes up to Rs 25,348 crore.

Tilaknagar Industries has agreed to buy a 10% stake in Spaceman Spirits Lab (SSLPL) for Rs 9.75 crore. The investment will be made through a combination of equity shares and compulsory convertible preference shares. Established in 2020, SSLPL owns Samsara gin. It had an annual turnover of Rs 2.7 crore during FY22.
