With a potential capacity of one million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA), the pipeline will enable Bangladesh to access large volumes of energy to meet its growing domestic demand.

Jindal Stainless to invest Rs 1,290 crore in nickel pig iron JV in Indonesia

Jindal Stainless signed a joint venture agreement with an Eternal Tsingshan unit to develop a greenfield 200,000 metric tonne nickel pig iron plant in Indonesia. The company will invest $157 million (~Rs 1,290 crore) in the project over the next two years for a 49% equity stake. New Yaking Pte, a unit of Eternal Tsingshan, will hold the remaining stake.

Taiwan-based battery swapping firm Gogoro Inc has partnered with Zomato and Kotak Mahindra Prime to promote fast adoption of electric mobility in the last-mile transportation segment. UCO Bank hopes to earn Rs 1,500 crore net this fiscal: MD & CEO

UCO Bank hopes to achieve a net profit of Rs 1,500 crore this fiscal year, said MD & CEO of S S Prasad. He added that the bank had also doubled market capitalisation in less than a year from Rs 13,000 crore to Rs 28,000 crore, thereby increasing the wealth of the shareholders. The total business of the bank had touched Rs 4 lakh crore.

Vedanta announces 5th interim dividend of Rs 20.5 per share

Vedanta has declared a fifth interim dividend of Rs 20.50 per equity share for the current financial year 2022-23 (FY23). The dividend will amount to Rs 7,621 crore. The company has already set April 7 as the record date for the same. The record date determines the eligibility of shareholders for the said dividend payment. In FY23, Vedanta has already declared four equity dividends of Rs 12.50, Rs 17,50, Rs 19.50, and Rs 31.50, respectively.

GR Infraprojects Ltd has secured two projects worth Rs 1,614 crore from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The first project includes the construction of a 4-6 lane bypass from Belagavi City. The second project includes the construction of a 4-lane with paved shoulders in the Belgaum-Hungund-Raichur section of NH‐748A in Karnataka.

Reliance in talks to increase batch of forex loans to $4.5 billion: Report

According to a Bloomberg report, Reliance Industries and its telecom arm Jio are reportedly planning an increase in a batch of foreign currency loans from $3 billion to $4.5 billion due to a large number of bids. The move comes in response to a large number of bids received, and both companies have already raised $1.5 billion each.

Lok Sabha passes Finance Bill

The Finance Bill, 2023 was passed in the Lok Sabha on Friday with over 64 amendments. The securities transaction tax (STT) on the sale of options has been increased to ₹2,100 on a turnover of ₹1 crore, compared to ₹1,700 earlier. The tax on royalty or technical fees earned by foreign (non-resident) companies hiked from 10% to 20%. Meanwhile, pension fund investments will be exempt from taxation under infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs).

Govt proposes to withdraw long-term capital gain benefits

The Central Government has proposed to withdraw the benefit of long-term capital gain tax for debt mutual funds. The Finance Bill 2023 was passed in Parliament to classify long-term capital gains from debt mutual funds as only short-term capital gains. As per the amendment, debt funds that have not more than 35% invested in equity shares are proposed to be taxed as per the income tax slab level and considered as a short-term capital gain.

RITES Ltd has secured a Project Management Consultancy work under Assam Health System Strengthening Project. The cost of the consultancy project comes to around Rs 122 crore. RITES’ fees in the work order are around Rs 77 crore. RITES is involved in mega transportation projects like dedicated freight corridors, metros, high-speed rail studies, logistics parks, and rail infrastructure.

Vedanta deducts $91 million from govt’s profit to make up for tax paid

To protest against the 9-month-old windfall tax, Vedanta Ltd has reportedly withheld about $91 million from the share of profit due to the government from its oil and gas fields, to make up for the additional tax outgo. India first imposed windfall profit tax on July 1, 2022, joining a growing number of nations that tax super normal profits of energy companies.

The US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) has issued a Form-483 with two minor procedural observations following the inspection of Alembic Pharmaceuticals Ltd’s injectable and ophthalmic facility (F-3) located at Karkhadi in Gujarat. The USFDA inspected the plant from March 16-24, 2023. Form 483 is issued to a firm’s management when the investigator has observed any conditions that may constitute violations of the Food Drug and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act and related Acts.

A spokesperson for Nykaa said five executives have resigned, the latest resignation at the beauty brand comes amid rising competitors and a crashing stock price. Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. is planning to raise up to Rs 600 crore through the issuance of bonds on a private placement basis. The company’s board has approved the issuance of unsecured, non-convertible, redeemable bonds aggregating to Rs 600 crore. This includes a base issue size of Rs 100 crore and a greenshoe option of Rs 500 crore. The bonds will be listed on BSE and/or NSE.

Vedanta denies media reports of Agarwal planning stake sale worth $630 million

News agency Bloomberg reported that chairman Anil Agarwal is weighing a stake sale in Vedanta as a last-resort option and is studying the possibility of selling less than 5% of the company. However, representatives of the company have denied it. Shares of Vedanta fell as much as 6.3% on Thursday after the report to their lowest since early March.

French oil major TotalEnergies said its investments in three subsidiaries of Indian conglomerate Adani were undertaken in full compliance with Indian laws and with TotalEnergies’ own governance processes. It was responding to a Le Monde report detailing allegations of financial irregularities that short-seller Hindenburg Research has levelled against Adani. TotalEnergies said that at current market prices, its interests in Adani entities would be worth $5.1 billion.

Glenmark Pharma’s investigational new drug (IND) application for potential cancer drug GRC 54276 was accepted by US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA). GAIL to get LNG shipments from Germany’s Sefe after nearly a year

GAIL (India) Ltd will get two cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) each in March and April from Germany’s Sefe for the first time since supplies were halted in May. Sefe was supplying cargoes from its non-Russian portfolio in Egypt, United Arab Emirates and the United States. The first cargo for March has already arrived at the Dahej terminal in western India.

Vedanta looks to raise up to $1 billion from credit funds

According to an ET report, Vedanta Group is planning to raise funds from names like Farallon Capital, Davidson Kempner and Ares SSG Capital to meet more than $1 billion in upcoming repayments. This comes as banks have become aggressive towards Vedanta on a $1 billion loan amid a tightening credit market. The pricing being offered by the banks is 300 basis points above the expected rate.

Mindspace Business Parks REIT (Mindspace REIT) has raised Rs 550 crore through an issue of green bonds. Executive Committee of the manager (K Raheja Corp Investment Managers LLP) has approved the allotment of 55,000 green debt securities in the form of listed, rated, secured non-convertible debentures of Rs 1 lakh each by way of the private placement. Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) has signed an agreement with Genesis, an arm of Vikas Lifecare Ltd (VLF), to set up a meter manufacturing plant at an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore. The unit will be set up through a joint venture company. In the joint venture, IGL and Genesis will have equity participation in the ratio of 51:49. The unit is expected to be operational by April 2024 and will have a production capacity of one million meters per annum initially.

Power Grid Corporation’s Board of Directors has approved investments of nearly Rs 4,071 crore for two transmission projects in India. The board has approved the transmission system for Kurnool Wind Energy Zone/ Solar Energy Zone (AP) at an estimated cost of Rs 3,546.94 crore and the Eastern Region Expansion Scheme at a cost of Rs 524.04 crore. These projects are scheduled to be commissioned by November 2024 and Nov 2025, respectively.

The credit card outstanding in January rose 29.6% to an all-time high of Rs 1.87 lakh crore on back of increased digitisation and rising consumer confidence in the post-Covid period. Tata Motors said it would supply 25,000 XPRES-T electric vehicle units to Uber in one of the largest deals in the green mobility space to date. As per a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the companies, Uber will utilise electric sedans in its premium category service. Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. will prepay the debt raised through commercial paper after it repaid 15 billion rupees of similar debt due on Monday as scheduled, the company’s spokesperson said. Adani said to decide against a bid for stake in power trader PTC

Gautam Adani has decided against bidding for a stake in state-backed electricity trader PTC India Ltd as the company looks to preserve cash amidst the Hindenburg issue. In January, Adani was among the possible bidders reviewing preliminary information on the Mumbai-listed company, Bloomberg News reported. The company will not proceed with any offer for the energy trading firm, said the people, who asked not to be identified as the information is private.

Gland Pharma to invest Rs 400 crore to expand its Telangana plant

Gland Pharma will invest Rs 400 crore to create additional capabilities in its existing facility at Genome Valley in Hyderabad to manufacture biologicals, biosimilars, antibodies, and recombinant Insulin. The expanded site is envisaged to meet the national and international regulations to be followed in the manufacturing of biological products as applicable, and shall be built under the GMP guidelines applicable for the respective product lines, it said.

Domestic aviation traffic continues growth, Jan records 1.25 cr passengers with 95.72% rise

Domestic aviation traffic has continued to witness massive growth. Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January 2023 were 1.25 crore, registering an annual growth of 95.72% and monthly growth of 95.72%. According to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the passenger load factor or occupancy of the airlines remained on the higher side in the range of 80 to 90%.

Vedanta Ltd has reduced net debt by $2 billion (~₹15,500 crore) in the current financial year as it seeks to soothe investor concern over its liquidity and ability to repay upcoming obligations. Meanwhile, Vedanta Resources Ltd. has achieved half of its three-year planned reduction commitment of $4 billion in the first year. Aditya Birla Group in talks with global banks for Vi equity infusion: Report

According to an Economic Times report, Aditya Birla Group has initiated an exercise to raise funds at the promoter level for an equity infusion into Vodafone Idea (Vi) Ltd. They are also in discussions with global banks for raising term debt to subscribe to a preferential allotment of shares. These funds will be used to part-finance the planned ₹5,000-crore equity infusion by the promoters into Vi, following the Indian government’s decision to convert dues worth ₹16,133 crore into equity.

Adani Group’s debt servicing ratio at comfortable level

According to a credit note released by Adani Enterprises, the group’s total debt is expected to remain stable at ₹2.3 lakh crore for FY23 compared with that in the 12 months to September 2022. This reflects the reduced focus on debt-funded capital expenditure (capex) amid efforts to improve the group’s debt profile. The group’s debt was ₹1.9 lakh crore in FY22.

Its revenue from operations rose 26.3% YoY to ₹10,784.3 crore during the same period. The asset under management (AUM) of the company was up 27% YoY to Rs 2.30 lakh crore in Q3. Net interest income (NII) for the quarter rose 24% YoY to ₹7,435 crore.

Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel gained subscribers in Nov 2022

Reliance Jio gained 14.2 lakh wireless subscribers in November 2022, while Bharti Airtel added 10.5 lakh subscribers. Vi lost nearly 18.2 lakh mobile users in Nov, further shrinking its user base to 24.37 crore. Jio and Bharti Airtel’s user bases expanded to 42.28 crore and 36.6 crore, respectively. TRAI data showed Jio and Airtel have widened their customer market shares to 36.99% and 32.03% (31.92%), respectively, while Vi’s has narrowed further to 21.33%.

Vedanta Ltd reported a 42% YoY decline in net profit to ₹3,092 crore for the quarter ended December (Q3 FY23). Its revenue from operations fell 7% YoY to ₹33,691 crore during the same period. EBITDA stood at ₹7,100 crore in Q3, down 35% YoY. The company declared a dividend of ₹12.5 per share.

DLF Ltd plans to launch a luxury housing project in Gurugram next month with an estimated sales revenue of around ₹7,500 crore as it seeks to tap strong demand for high-end apartments. Tata Motors Ltd will hike the prices of its passenger vehicles by 1.2% on a weighted average basis from February 1 due to the rise in overall input costs. The vehicle maker said it has been “absorbing a significant portion of the increased costs on account of regulatory changes and rise in overall input costs and is hence passing on some portion through this hike.”

Tata Elxsi reported a 29% YoY increase in net profit to ₹194.68 crore for the quarter ended December (Q3 FY23). Its revenue from operations rose 28.7% YoY to ₹817.74  crore during the same period. EBITDA stood at ₹246.9 crore in Q3, up 17.1% YoY. The company’s media & communications segment grew 14.7% YoY in a challenging quarter for the industry, aided by new wins in Android TV and ad tech.

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd. has launched the generic version of Durezol eye drops in the United States following approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA). The product is used to treat eye swelling and pain after eye surgery. According to IQVIA data, the Durezol brand and its generic version had total sales of approximately $40 million in the US market for the 12 months ended November 2022.

Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd will acquire a majority stake (51%) in Saddles International Automotive and Aviation Interiors Pvt. Ltd. (SIAAIPL) for ₹207 crore. SIAAIPL manufactures premium upholstery for applications, including seat covers for passenger vehicles, wrapping of door panels, and gear knob covers. The deal will allow Samvardhana Motherson to enter the upholstery space.

Ashok Leyland’s Switch Mobility, JBM Auto, and PMI Electro Mobility have emerged as the lowest bidders for a $362.24 million (~₹3,000 crore) tender floated by state-run Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL). Switch Mobility will supply 2,600 electric buses in three states, JBM Auto 1,781 e-buses in three states, and PMI Electro quoted the lowest for the supply of 2,080 electric buses in two states.

Housing demand across India rises 19% in Q3

The Magicbricks’ PropIndex report for the quarter ended Dec (Q3 FY22) said the aggregate residential demand (indicated by searches) increased 19% YoY led by major cities such as Mumbai with a 52.1% rise, Noida 35.8%, Gurgaon 34.5%, Delhi 14.8% and Bengaluru with 33% growth. The average property rates increased 13.9% YoY, and the cumulative supply (indicated by listings) grew 2.7% YoY.

Vedanta’s aluminium production falls 2% in Q3

Vedanta Ltd’s total aluminum production declined by 2% YoY to 5.66 lakh tonne in the three months ended December 2022. Alumina production at Lanjigarh refinery in Odisha FELL 6% YoY and 2% from the previous quarter to 4.43 lakh tonne due to maintenance activities in calciners. Total production of finished steel was at 3.06 lakh tonne in Q3, down by 13% YoY.

NTPC’s power generation jumps 11% to 254 BU in April-December 2022

NTPC Ltd has reported an 11.6% year-on-year (YoY) growth in power generation during the April-December period in FY23. The state-owned company generated 295.4 billion (BU) of power during the period. The coal-based thermal power plants of the company utilised 73.7 percent of their capacity, a jump from 68.5 percent utilisation in the year-ago period. NTPC also commissioned India’s first green hydrogen blending project on Tuesday.

Honasa Consumer Ltd, the parent company of personal care brand Mamaearth, has filed its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) with the Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for an initial public offering (IPO). The IPO will include a fresh issue of shares aggregating to ₹400 crore and an offer for sale (OFS) of up to 4.68 crore shares. Honasa was valued at $1.2 billion when it raised $52 million in January 2022.

Vedanta invites bids for natural gas from its Rajasthan block

Vedanta has invited bids for natural gas from its Rajasthan block at a floor price of $9.57 per metric million British thermal units (mmBtu). The company plans to sell 3 million metric standard cubic meters per day (mmscmd) of gas in an auction scheduled for January 18. The supply will be offered for a year beginning April 1 from the Raageshwari gas terminal at Barmer, Rajasthan.

Proposed investments under PLI scheme in automobile sector overshoot target estimate

The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for automobile and auto components has managed to attract a proposed investment worth ₹67,690 crore against the target estimate of investment of ₹42,500 crore (over five years). IT hardware makers seek tax clarity on routers after raids, duty demands

IT hardware makers have sought clarity on customs taxation of imported routers after six major companies were raided and issued show-cause notices by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) demanding differential duties of over ₹1,000 crore. The companies allege that the actions have led to business disruptions. IT hardware manufacturers say a lack of clarity on router classification has resulted in the authorities sending letters, emails, and summons.

India’s current account deficit rises to 4.4% of GDP in Q2

India’s current account deficit widened to 4.4% of the GDP in the quarter ended September 2022 (Q2) due to a higher trade gap, as per data released by the Reserve Bank of India.  The current account deficit stood at 2.2% of GDP during Q1. Services exports reported a growth of 30.2% year-on-year (YoY) on the back of rising exports of software, business, and travel services.

Tata Consumer Products Ltd (TCPL) has acquired a 23.3% additional stake in South Africa-based Joekels Tea Packers for ₹43.65 crore through a step-down subsidiary. As a result of the acquisition, the subsidiary’s holding in Joekels will increase from 51.7% to 75% of the equity share capital. Joekels is the 3rd largest tea business in South Africa.

Banks’ bad loans likely to remain stable by Sept 2023: RBI

The gross non-performing asset (NPA) ratio of domestic banks is likely to remain stable at 4.9% by September 2023, compared to 5% in September this year. “If all macroeconomic indicators remain stable, gross bad loans are unlikely to rise or fall much from current levels,” according to projections presented in the RBI’s latest Financial Stability Report. 

RBI said banks’ gross NPA ratio has fallen to a seven-year low of 5%, and the banking system remains sound and well-capitalised.

The two companies had been demerged in 2015 as part of a financial and operational restructuring exercise to bring down the cost of borrowing. Jindal Stainless had a debt of over ₹8,500 crore, which prompted the restructuring.

Bharat Highways InvIT has filed a draft prospectus with the capital markets regulator SEBI to raise ₹2,000 crore through an initial public offering. Proceeds of the issue will be used to repay certain loans obtained by the project special purpose vehicles (SPV) and for general corporate purposes. As per the draft papers, Bharat Highways InvIT would issue units aggregating up to ₹2,000 crore.

2,613 air incidents reported in India during five years; IndiGo tops the list: Govt

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) said there has been a long list of air incidents reported in the last five years involving domestic airlines and added that 12 of these airline companies are presently operating in India. There were a total of 2,613 air incidents reported due to technical snags in the five years in which IndiGo airlines topped the list. IndiGo reported 215 incidents so far in 2022 and 885 incidents over five years.
